PLACER DOME CANADA PROJECT 413 - CLAIM KRL 1184166 GEOLOGICAL REPORT - 1995 WORK PROGRAMME BAIRD TOWNSHIP, ONTARIO SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS Preliminary mapping of claim KRL 1184166 defined the lithology of the area (dominantly mafic flows with lesser amounts of mafic and ultramafic intrusives) and indicated limited alteration (few carbonate stringers) and sulphide mineralization (trace pyrite). A magnetic high identified by previous work is interpreted to be in response to ultramafic units in the area. These units could be examined in greater detail by mechanical stripping and/or diamond drilling. INTRODUCTION Claim KRL 1184166 is an unpatented mining claim located in Baird Township, Red Lake Mining Division (Fig. 1). Between July 31 and September 8, 1995, Placer Dome Canada Limited (PDC) cunducted a mapping and sampling programme to evaluate the property. A grid (baseline oriented at 0900, lines spaced at 100m) was established and used during the field work. PROPERTY The property consists of one unpatented claim (KRL 1184166) composed of one 16- hectare claim unit in Baird Township, Red Lake Mining Division (Fig. 2). It was recorded by PDC on May 3, 1995. LOCATION AND ACCESS Located in Baird Township, the property is situated approximately three kilometres northnorthwest of the town of Madsen. Access can be made either via boat to St. Paul Bay and travelling approximately three kilometres south on the old road east of Dome Creek, or by travelling by all terrain vehicle or snow machine west on the Buffalo Pit road, then south on the road from St. Paul Bay (Fig. 2). This road passes on the east side of Paulore Lake; the No. l Post is located 125m west of the north end of this lake.

PREVIOUS WORK The first recorded work in the area was by Dome Mines Limited in 1926 who conducted an exploration programme. The company subsequently dropped the property when they failed to locate any zones of economic mineralization (Horwood, 1940). In the 1930's, Paulore Gold Mines Limited conducted surface mapping in the area. The work concentrated on areas east of the claim and included the sinking of a 322 foot shaft (the Paulore Shaft). The company suspended work in 1939. In the 1940's, the claim was transferred to Redaurum Red Lake Mines Limited who conducted work to the north and east of the property. GENERAL GEOLOGY The Red Lake Greenstone Belt is an east-west trending belt consisting dominantly of volcanic rocks with lesser amounts of clastic sedimentary rocks and mafic intrusives, and is bounded on all sides by large granitic batholiths (Fig. 3). Ultramafic rocks are interspersed throughout the mafic volcanics along with minor interflow metasedimentary rocks. PROPERTY GEOLOGY The southeast corner of the property is covered by the waters of Paulore Lake. The topography is dominated by low-lying swampy areas with few spruce and poplar ridges; outcrop is thus limited to less than \ Q7c exposure. The lithology consists mainly of massive mafic volcanic flows with lesser amounts of diorite (in the northeast corner) and ultramafic intrusives (in the southwest and northeast; Fig. 4). Table l lists the rock types found. Carbonate alteration occurs locally in the mafic flows; trace amounts of pyrite are present in approximately 25 9c of the outcrops mapped. The ultramafic intrusives are interpreted to be the cause of magnetic highs noted in the area (see Hogg, 1986).
