Perspectives from the JRFB Chair 21 June, 2016 JR Facility Board, Chair Update by Slide 1 of 15 Outline 1 Updates from the JOIDES Resolution (JR) Facility Board (JRFB) 1A Simplified Guidelines for Preparing Proposals 1B Amphibious Drilling Proposals (ADP) 2 New JR Expeditions Scheduled FY 17-19 2A Five Expeditions in FY 17-19 (one extra per year) 2B Two Antarctic Expeditions (need ice breaker support) 3 Long-term JR Track and Update on Proposal Pressure in the South Atlantic Update by Slide 2 of 15

1A. Simplified Proposal Guidelines Update by Slide 3 of 15 1B. Amphibious Drilling Proposals Since May 2015 proponents can propose a combined proposal to drill on land and offshore JRFB 1505 Consensus Statement 3 The JRFB approves the Guidelines for Joint IODP-ICDP Amphibious Proposals and agrees to move forward with implementation in conjunction with the ICDP and the IODP Science Support Office. Ø At least 3 ADPs are currently being reviewed by the Science Evaluation Panel (SEP) Ø Review of ADP Preliminary and Full proposals follow IODP Proposal Submission Guidelines (i.e. business as usual and same treatment as any other IODP proposal) Update by Slide 4 of 15

1B. Amphibious Drilling Proposals Parallel workshop funding pathway Two separated but closely related initial proposals Normal IODP proposal process Update by Slide 5 of 15 1B. Amphibious Drilling Proposals Normal IODP proposal process Update by Slide 6 of 15

2. Updated JR Schedule FY 17-19 * Fiscal Year 1 Oct - 30 Sept Proposal Expedition Title FY 17 P832 Tasman Frontier Subduction FY 18 Expedition 369 Australia Cretaceous Climate and Tectonics FY 18 P841-APL + P781A (1 of 2) Combined Expedition Creeping Gas Hydrate Slides and LWD portion of Hikurangi Observatory FY 18 P751 ** West Antarctic Ice Sheet Climate (Ross Sea) FY 18 P781A (2 of 2) Hikurangi Observatory (CORK installations) FY 18 P818 Brothers Arc Flux FY 18 Non-IODP Mandatory 5-year Inspection JOIDES Resolution FY 19 P567 South Pacific Paleogene FY 19 Non-IODP Short 2-4 weeks (move from Tahiti to Punta Arenas, Chile) FY 19 P839 ** Amundsen Sea Ice Sheet History * Subject to funding being available for ship operations in FY 18-19 ** Subject to the availability of an ice-breaker in support of JOIDES Resolution operations around Antarctica (if required) Update by Slide 7 of 15 2. Updated JR Schedule FY 17-19 Antarctica s Cenozoic ice and climate history Ø Four JRFB+EFB proposals form a coherent West Antarctic Margin transect illuminating spatial and temporal variations of past ice sheet dynamics Ø To improve our understanding of underlying processes, 848 Weddell thresholds and magnitudes Sea (at SEP) of previous West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) retreats and collapses, with implycations for sea level rise Update by Slide 8 of 15

2. Updated JR Schedule FY 17-19 Update by Slide 9 of 15 3. Long-Term JR Cruise Track BASED ON JRFB 1605 Update by Slide 10 of 15

3. Long-Term JR Cruise Track CURRENT PROPOSALS AT SEP AND JRFB (STARS) AND EXPEDITIONS (CIRCLES) Update by Slide 11 of 15 3. Long-Term JR Cruise Track No Proposal Pressure (yet) in the South Atlantic Ø Proposal pressure is improving in South Atlantic, but the vast majority of the proposals are still in the preliminary stage (and 3 out of 9 are new) Ø If these pre-proposals do well in SEP, JRFB and EPSP, then they can develop into an expedition by > April 2019 (mid-late FY19) at the earliest OCT 2016 JAN 2017 APR 2017 JUN 2017 OCT 2017 JAN 2018 MAY 2018 JUL 2018 SEPT 2018 > APR 2019 PROPONENT ACTION IODP PANELS FULL1 FULL2 PRL SEP Ask for Revision SEP Send Out for External Review SEP Approve, Rate and Forward to JRFB JRFB May put Proposal on Expedition Schedule Safety Package EPSP Approve Sites SAILING EXPEDITION Update by Slide 12 of 15

3. Long-Term JR Cruise Track ASSUMING 877-CPP2 (FLEMINGS) WILL BE FORWARED BY SEP 1606 Update by Slide 13 of 15 3. Long-Term JR Cruise Track UPDATED MAP (CALENDAR YEARS) FOLLOWING JRFB MEETING OF MAY 2016 Update by Slide 14 of 15

Conclusions 1 SEP proposal process for regional planning of JR ship track works very efficiently and is agile 1A Need to keep stimulating timely submissions for FULL proposals in the South Atlantic 1B Need to wake up community to start submitting PRELIM proposals for North Atlantic, Arctic and adjacent seas 1C Circumnavigation requires Pacific proposals for 2012-13 2 Improved JR Business Model 2A Allows for in total 5 to 5½ JR Expeditions per year 2B Additional support for shipboard/shore-based analytics 2C Additional support for LWD and CORK operations 3 Two Antarctic Expeditions require ice breaker support, certainly the Ross Sea expedition Update by Slide 15 of 15
