March 2013 Meeting The program on March 6th was by Mary Gerritson on her harrowing trip to Venezeula entitled "The Lost Worlds-Mt. Roraima". This place lookes like Jurassic Park; in fact some of the movie was filmed there. These mountains have tabletops of many acres which are so inacessible that few have ever been there, let alone climbed to the top like Mary and her group. There were many orchids and other specis in situ. Thanks Mary for showing us a place where few will ever go. Olivers Corner Orchid Facts with twisting columns. Blooms open from December to February and last a month or so. Although the main attraction for this orchid is its foliage, a good specimen plant with blooms can give a very striking display. Ludisia is a monotypic, terrestrial genus grown for its stunning, velvety foliage rather than its blooms. It is native to Southeast Asia and China, growing on damp forest floors. Ludisia discolor, commonly called the Jewel Orchid, is the only repesentative of this genus. Ludisia discolor can be grown as a house plant. In fact, many people have it at home without any awareness of it as an orchid. It needs high humidity and warm temperatures. These conditions make it ideal as terrarium plants. Humidity trays or a shallow pan with pebbles and water can simulate the humidity requirements. It is tolerant of extremely low light levels. Water requirements appear to vary from source to source, as can be gleaned from the info from Selby Botanical Gardens below. Nevertheless, water and feed copiously, once in active growth. It can be a pretty easy plant for beginners to grow. The small flowers are borne in clusters high above the plant on upright stalks. They are yellow The Burleigh Park Orchids website describes four variants of Ludisia discolor. The typical form has dark green leaves, red underside and a central silver sripe. The Dawsoniana form has reddish leaves with prominent copper-colored veination. The odina form has dark green leaves and dark red underside. This form has mostly silver-colored veination with the outer vein or two slight pink red. The alba form has clear green leaves and silver veination. The underside of the leaves has no coloring at all. The last form that arose from their collection was described as having yellowish green leaves with copper-colored veination and light flushed underside on new leaves. At maturity, the veins on the leaves turn to gold on a yellowish green background. Propagation appears to be easy as the internet references indicate. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens website reports that this orchid can be rooted in water. It also reports that variation on leaf venaition appears to be the norm, citing observations made on breeding done. At times, the article also added that veination patterns appear to change as the plant matures. 10
