PREFACE This volume marks the publication of the second Conference Issue ofthe Society's Bulletin series, dedicated to papers presented at the Society's Annual Geological Conferences. This Bulletin 46 contains the reviewed papers that will be presented at the Annual Geological Conference 2003 which will be held on the 24-26th May 2003 at the Hilton Hotel, Kuching, Sarawak. A total of 80 papers will be presented, of these, there will be 4 Keynote Papers and 52 oral presentations in 8 Technical Sessions while the other 24 will make up presentations at the 2 Poster Sessions. I like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Organising Chairman of the Annual Geological Conference 2003, En. Alex Unya Ambun, for putting up a commendable conference programme and being able to attract 80 contributions for this Conference Issue. It was indeed a monumental task to get this volume in time for the Conference with the large number of papers and the tedious editorial process coupled with the need to maintain the standard of the Society's publications. Authors are reminded that this is a journal publication and not a conference publication and as such they should come up with papers worthy of such a publication. I would like to thank the reviewers for their prompt and excellent reviews. To the members of the editorial subcommittee, in particular N g Tham F att and A.K. Fan, I like to extend my sincere appreciation for their tireless efforts for working round-the-clock to ensure that this volume will be available to all at the Conference. Last but not least, special thanks must be accorded to the many contributors of papers for their worthy contributions to this publication and making the Annual Geological Conference 2003 in Kuching, Sarawak, a memorable experience. G.H. Teh Chairman Editorial Subcommittee Annual Geological Conference 2003 iii

FOREWORD The Annual Geological Conference 2003 is the 17th in the series of conferences organised by the Geological Society of Malaysia since 1986. The Conference is a national event well-attended by geoscientists from academia, as well as the public and private sectors. Hence the Conference provides participants with an excellent opportunity to exchange scientific and technical information. Sarawak is blessed with natural resources like petroleum, gas, coal and industrial minerals like ball clay, kaolin and silica sand. These resources have been promoted for the global export market. As such, geoscientists should contribute their knowledge and expertise in the search for such natural resources including groundwater in the whole of Malaysia, as well as mitigate related increase in geohazards such as landslides and slope failures or recommend geological sites for conservation. In addition, geoscientists may also help in giving guidelines to relevant agencies involved in resource exploitation for development in terms of environmental limits for sustainability. Thus this annual conference can be a venue for geoscientists to bring forward their findings and experience in some ways relevant to this year's annual geological conference theme "Perseverance in geoscience towards sustainable development". The scientific programme of this Conference was allocated into parallel sessions to accommodate the wide ranging interests of Malaysian geoscientists under 8 themes. The themes include Engineering Geology & Hydrogeology, Petrology & Geochemistry, Environmental & Conservation Geology, Tectonics & Structural Geology, Mineral Resources, Geoscience Tools & Techniques, Sedimentology/Stratigraphy & Paleontology. Four keynote addresses and 76 papers have been selected for presentation (52 oral and 24 poster). The papers are more-or-iess evenly distributed within each theme and are expected to further enhance the current knowledge and understanding of the geology of Malaysia. The Annual Geological Conference 2003 marks the second time such a conference by the Geological Sooiety of Malaysia is held in (The Land of the Hombill) Sarawak; the first time was in May 1991,12 years ago. The conference this year provides participants with the unique opportunity to get to sample the geology ofsarawak more intimately through the pre- and mid-conference fieldtrips that have been planned and discover the state's geotourism potential especially when 2003 is Sarawak Tourism Year. This Special Conference Issue of the Society's Bulletin series, will be distributed to all participants at the Conference. The publication of this Special Conference Issue this year is again a great challenge to the Organising Committee in general and the Editorial Subcommittee in particular, in view ofthe larger number of papers, short time constraint and the need to maintain the quality of material. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Prof. Teh Guan Hoe, Ng Tham Fatt, A.K. Fan and members ofthe Editorial Subcommittee for their hard work and commitment. I would also like to extent my gratitude to the board of reviewers and all contributors of papers for their help in making this publication a reality. Lastly, I am also indebted to members ofthe organising committee for their dedication and support in planning and ensuring the success ofthe conference programme despite the lingering SARS problem. Alex Unya Ambun Chairman Organising Committee Annual Geological Conference 2003 iv
