1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 Introduction The proposed mining lease area applied for quarrying of Steatite Stone (soap stone) by Sri. Mohammad Akramis situated in survey no. No. 402of 1-30 Acres of Karigala Village, H.D. KoteTaluk, Mysore District, Karnataka which isgovernment Land. India is rich in Steatite Stone deposits and one among the leading countries in Quarrying and Exportof Steatite Stone. India has about 110 different varieties of Steatite Stones which are different in colour and texture. These varieties are used to produce monuments, Steatite slabs, titles, surface plates etc. The proposed area is not fit for agriculture and technical report from Department of Mines and Geology indicate that the subject area has Steatite Stone deposits.detailed study of the area has been done by the applicant.the salient features of the project are given Table 1.1. ThisStone is used as a making of kitchen articles, sculptures, and monuments etc. Open cast semi mechanized mining method is followed for quarrying of Steatite Stone. Sri. Mohammad Akramis the proprietor of the proposed project located in Sy No. 402of KarigalaVillage, H.D. KoteTaluk, Mysore District, Karnataka, which measures around 1-30 acres. He has significant experience in Steatite Stone mining. 2.2 Brief Information about the Project The mining lease area of1-30 acresis located in GovernmentLand. Open cast Semimechanized method mining is followed and it has been proposed to produce approximately1500 tons/annum of Steatite Stone. The nearest habitation from the proposed project is at a distance of 0.8 km towards SW direction ie, KarigalaVillage. 2.3 Need for the Project and Its Importance to the Country or Region The demand for Steatite Stone increased due to rapid industrialization and growth in infrastructure. So the number of Steatite Stone producing quarries is increasing in India. Steatite Stone is the chief material in this sector, for the export industries like Countertops in kitchens and laboratories, monuments, flooringslabs, & export.based on the demand of Steatite Stone, the lessee intends to produce the required quantity of Steatite Stone for domestic & international market. As per EIA notification 2006 project proponent issubmitting the proposal to get Clearance for production capacity of1500 tons/annumofsteatite Stone blocksfrom PFR-II

State Level Environmental Appraisal Committee/State level ImpactAssessment Authority of Karnataka constituted by MoEF&CC, GOI for the purpose of grant of quarrylease for which Notification for grant is issued. 2.4 Demands-Supply Gap The demand and supply for the Steatite Stone is growing which makes a lot of scope for revenue generation.once the stone is obtained after quarrying it is further processed and supplied to industries. 2.5 Domestic/ Export Markets Although Steatite Stone is a minor mineral, it is a major contributor in foreign exchange earnings. India is the second largest exporter of raw Steatite Stone after China and ahead of Brazil and South Africa. 2.6 Employment Generation Proposed mining is semi mechanized method and this project operation will provide livelihood to the08 workers. It will provide employment to the people residing in vicinity. 3.0 PROJECT DESCRIPTION 3.1 Type of Project Including Interlinked and Interdependent Projects, If Any. The lease area is located in Government land is a waste land. The lease area is very slightly undulated with very gentle slope due west. No roads pass through the applied area. No human settlements within or in the vicinity of the applied area. The nearest village of 0.8kms from the area. PFR-VI

The drainage pattern of the buffer zone is dendritic to sub-dendritic in nature. No perennial nallahs or streams are seen within the applied area. The highest elevation is 702mts at Northeast corner and lowest elevation is 695mts towards Northwest corner of the applied area having an elevation difference of 7 m For survey purposes, a temporary bench mark (TBM) with 702 m RL is considered at NE corner of the area and the same is shown in the Drg. No.3 & 4 (Surface & Geological plan). 3.5.2 Geology Peninsular Gneiss Complex: Large parts of Karnataka are covered by granites and gneisses of different ages. some are banded migmatites, and some others are tonalitic. A variety of ages ranging from 3400m.y. to 2500m.y. have been obtained for rocks of this gneissic complex. Peninsular Gneiss is to be considered as a complex of gneisses and granites. It is, as the name indicates a complex containing within it several cycles of supracrustal development, granite intrusion and migmatization. 3.5.3 Explorations Exploration is carried out. Lease area is covered with exposed as a outcrop and extended in all directions. As this is the alteration of the igneous rocks which extends extensively both in the horizontal and vertical directions, prospecting is not necessary 3.5.4Reserves Table 3.5.5.1 Geological Reserves Estimation Category Quantity In Tons Proved Mineral resources 34185 Probable Mineral resources 94141 Remaining resources 100664 Total 228990 PFR-VII

Steatite is massive, smooth, uniform texture and soapy feel, called soapstone. Stetite is forming large masses in the Archaean and Dharwar Rocksof the Peninsular gneisses. It is the final product of the alteration of ultrabasic and basic eruptive rocks. Thegeneral strike direction of the Steatite formation is NE-SW with steep dip. The general sequence of the rock formations obtained in the area during the field visit is as under. SOIL STEATITE GNEISSES 4.4 Climatic data from secondary sources The area has dry climate. The average rain fall per annum is about 900 mm. The highest temperature will be 34 0 C during summer and 15 0 C during winter nights. The relative humidity is about 70% to 80%. Moderate wind velocities in eastto west direction are experienced during monsoon seasons. 5.0 PLANNING BRIEF 5.1 Planning Concept It is proposed to produce peak production of 1500tons/annum of Steatite Stone from the proposed mining lease. 5.2 Population projection The project will employ mostly workers from nearby villages. There will not be any increase in population due to the project. 5.3 Land use planning The project site isgovernment Land. There will be change in landuse as the Steatite Stone will be excavated.
