Information READ AND UNDERSTAND THIS DOCUMENT ENTIRELY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO CONNECT AND USE THE TRUNNION. WARNING WHEN CONNECTING A TRUNNION TO A VF MILL. USE THE TR PARAMETERS FOR THE TRUNNION YOU ARE CONNECTING. This document is meant to be a supplement to the Tilting Rotary Table Operator s Manual 96-5048 as an aid in connecting and operating the Trunnion. Since there is no standard designation as to which axis is A and which is B, this Procedure will refer to the axes as the Tilt axis and the Rotary axis. This Procedure sets up the Tilt and the Rotary as a Full axes. This Procedure can be used on CNC machines with 5 axis capability. Ensure that the shipping brackets are removed from the Trunnion assembly before attempting to operate it. Do not connect or disconnect any rotary product to a CNC machine with power on. The Tilt axis must have travel limits set in the Parameters to prevent cable twisting. WARNING WHEN CONNECTING A TRUNNION TO A VF MILL. LOOK TO SEE IF ANY PART OF THE TRUNNION HANGS OVER THE EDGE OF THE TABLE. IF SO TRAVEL LIMIT MUST BE SET TO PREVENT A CRASH. 2
POSSIBLE CONFIGURATIONS: There are at least four different ways in which the Trunnion Rotaries can be connected to a CNC machine. The following diagrams four of the possible configurations. Configuration A: Tilt and Rotary Interpolating or Full Configuration B: Tilt = Auxiliary & Rotary = Interpolating or Full Configuration C: Tilt = Interpolating or Full & Rotary = Auxiliary Configuration D: Tilt = Auxiliary & Rotary = Auxiliary This Procedure will cover Configuration A Only. CONFIGURATION A Tilt & Rotary = Interpolating or Full Rotary Product (Fig 1 Pg 4) Connection to Mill (Fig 2 Pg5) Axis to Program (Fig 3 Pg 6) Tilt A-axis A-axis Rotary 5 th axis B-axis Setting 30 4 TH AXIS ENABLE = VR-A *Compare the A-axis Parameters to those in the Parameter Checker Program for the Trunnion being connected. Steps of Procedure Connecting the Trunnion: Stone all mating surfaces of the Trunnion and the Table to eliminate any burrs and to insure proper alignment of the mating surfaces. Place the Trunnion on the Mill Table & snug the locking bolts for Safety. With the Mill Powered Off Connect the Trunnion cables. The Tilt axis of the Trunnion to The A-axis on the Mill The Rotary axis of the Trunnion to The 5 th axis on the Mill (See Figure 2 Page 5) Connect the Trunnion to the air supply Settings: Press <POWER ON> Press <SETNG GRAPH> Type in 30 and Press < > until you get to VR-A (Setting 30) Type in 1.0000 (Setting 34) Press < > until you get to VR-B (Setting 78) Type in 1.0000 (Setting 79 Type in 0 (Setting 38) Parameters:(For the Tilt A-axis) Type in 7 and Press < > until you get to OFF (Setting 7) Press <PARM DGNOS> Press <E-STOP> Type in 43 and Using the Parameters you obtained. from the Parameter Checker, for the TR rotary product you are connecting, update the A-axis Parameters. Parameters:(For the Rotary B-axis) Type in 151 and Using the Parameters you obtained. from the Parameter Checker, for the TR rotary product you are connecting, update the B-axis Parameters. Release <E-STOP> Press <POWER OFF> Press <POWER ON> Press <RESET> To clear any alarms 7
Verifying Trunnion Operation: Press <ZERO RET> Press <A> Press <SINGL AXIS> The A-axis should Zero Return Press <B> Press <SINGL AXIS> The B-axis should Zero Return Press <X> Press <SINGL AXIS> Press <Y> Press <SINGL AXIS> Press <Z> Press <SINGL AXIS> The next step is necessary only if you have a Servo Controlled, High Speed, Tool Changer Press <POWER UP/RESTART> ADJUSTING PLATTER FLATNESS: With the Trunnion in the Home position. Handle jog the X & Y-axes to position the Trunnion as shown in Figure 4 Indicate here to square the Trunnion Figure 4 Press <HANDLE JOG> Press <+X> Press <.001 1.> Jog the X-axis between the points indicated in Figure 4 If the axis is not square: Check to see that the bottom of the Trunnion and the surface of the Table are clean and free of burs. 8
SETTING PARAMETER 212 (TOOL CHANGE OFFSET): With the Trunnion in the Home position. Handle jog the X & Y-axes to position the Trunnion as shown in Figure 5 Indicate here to square the Trunnion Figure 5 To adjust: Press <SETNG/GRAPH> Type 7 Press < > until you get OFF Press <WRITE/ENTER> Press <ALARM/MESGS> Type D E B U G Press <WRITE/ENTER> Press <POSIT> as many times as necessary to get to the A-axis Raw Data Page Press <HANDLE JOG> Press <+A> Press <.001 1.> Jog the Y-axis and check the Platter flatness between the points indicated in Figure 4 (It maybe necessary to jog between the A and Y axis to level the platter) When the Platter is level: Write down the A-axis Actual Value from the A-axis Raw Data Page Calculate the new Parameter 212 value as follows: If the back of the platter (Part closest to the back of the mill) is lower than the reading in the front ADD the Actual Value to the existing Parameter 212 Value. If the back of the platter (Part closest to the back of the mill) is higher than the reading in the front SUBTRACT the Actual Value to the existing Parameter 212 Value. 9
ADJUST PARALLELISM TO THE X-AXIS: Press <PARM DGNOS> Type 212 Type in the New Calculated Parameter 212 Value Press E-stop Press <WRITE/ENTER> (The Trunnion will use this value to zero the A-axis) Remove the indicator Press <POWER OFF> Press <POWER ON> Press <RESET> To clear any alarms Press <POWER UP / RESTART> (Re-check the Platted flatness in the Y-axis) Rotate the Tilt axis to the 90 position. Attach the 1 tenth indicator to the spindle housing and position as shown in figure 6 Indicate here to square the Trunnion FIGURE 4 Figure 6 Handle jog the X-axis and indicate across the marked points and adjust the Trunnion to a maximum of.0003 To adjust: Loosen the Trunnion bolts leaving the left side outboard nut snug to act as a pivot point, tap with a dead-blow mallet at the base, on the right side of the Trunnion, in the direction desired. Lock down the Trunnion and re-check the reading. 10
