Introduction to Waterway Program What is a Waterway? Current Waterway design practices Using GIS with Waterways Live Demonstration Q & A

Named WaterwayBuilder Web-based b GIS program Built in cooperation with Agren, Inc. and NRCS provide agricultural domain knowledge Combines GIS technology with existing Waterways design practices to create accurate designs and cost estimates

What is a waterway? Grassed waterways are areas planted with grass or other permanent vegetative cover where water usually concentrates as it runs off a field. Grass in the waterway slows the water and guides it off the field. How does it help the land? Grass or permanent vegetation established in waterways protects the soil from concentrated flow. Grassed waterways significantly reduce gully erosion. How are they designed? Small waterways are designed in a parabolic, or dish shape, wide enough and deep enough to carry the peak runoff from a 24-hour storm that would be expected to occur once in 10 years. Source: NRCS Website (nrcs.usda.gov)

Field Work and Topo Maps Measure the drainage area ( watershed ) of the waterway Measure the distance from highest point to waterway outlet ( flowline ) Determine the slope of the waterway channel Find the Runoff Curve Number for the watershed using soils and land covers Waterways Software Ohio Grassed Waterway Design Program Spatial Software AutoCAD ArcGIS Process can take 10-15 hours Source: Agren, Inc. (www.agrentools.com)

GIS data readily available Elevation, soils, aerial imagery GIS does measurements easily Slopes, lengths, area Complex analysis Cuts and fills when fitting channel into existing terrain Can use results of a GIS-based program with other GIS layers for further analysis

Elevation Digital Elevation Model LiDAR-dervied data Soils SSURGO Land Covers Identified by user Cropland, pasture, woods, etc. Combined with soils to determine Runoff Curve Number Aerial Imagery Guide for the user

User identifies features on map Proposed waterway channel Watershed and flowline Designates land covers User makes adjustments Splits waterway into multiple sections Moves end points up and down Provides additional details Program calculates channel dimensionsi Channel shape and earthwork Cost estimate User may make further adjustments Report Export GIS data

Technologies used: ASP.NET ArcGIS Server Waterway Analysis and Design Routine (USDA & KSU)

Fast Using existing methods: 10-15 hours Using WaterwayBuilder: 30 minutes Accurate Using highly hl detailed d elevation data Using proven waterways design process Easy Web-based, based no software to install No GIS experience needed
