The Bulldogs blanked the Catamounts in both games, winning game one 12-0 before handing WCU a 9-0 loss in the second game. The Bulldogs are now 4-1 against SoCon teams this season. Against South Carolina Georgia leads the all-time series with South Carolina 31-23, including a sweep of the Gamecocks last season. Georgia has not lost to the Gamecocks since the 2007 season, making it 13-straight wins over South Carolina. Puailoa Has a Day Kaylee Puailoa had herself a day against Western Carolina. The freshman went 5-for-6 with a double, eight RBI and two runs scored. She also slugged a perfect 1.000 and had an onbase percentage of.833. The performance raised her season average to.407. Winning Big Without A Home Run Georgia out scored Western Carolina 21-0 on Wednesday without the help of the home run. Georgia is just 5-8 when it does not hit a homer, compared to 24-5 when it hits at least one home run. Power Outing The Bulldogs hit at a.477 clip in the two games against Western Carolina on Wednesday. Led by Kaylee Puailoa with an.833 average, six players hit over.400, with Christine Olney, Niaja Griffin, Geri Ann Glasco and Paige Wilson each hitting over.500. Georgia Pitching The Georgia pitching staff is off to a solid start this week after shutting out Western Carolina twice. Georgia pitchers combined to give up just three hits 10 innings of work. They also struck out five batters and held opponents to a.083 batting average. Morgan Montemayor and Geri Ann Glasco each picked up a win for Georgia on Wednesday. Columbia, S.C. Beckham Field Jen Galas, Sports Communications Office: 706.542.7965 Cell: 336.509.8819 Email: jgalas@sports.uga.edu OVERALL: 29-13 SEC: 6-6 Two College World Appearances 11 NCAA Appearances Two SEC Titles Home Run Leaders There are five players in the SEC with 13 home runs this season. Of those, three are from Georgia. Kaylee Puailoa, Geri Ann Glasco and Tina Iosefa each own a team and league-leading 13 dingers this season. What a Crowd! Georgia saw nearly 5,700 fans make their way to Jack Turner Stadium over the four games last week. On Saturday, a record 1,986 fans came out to see the Bulldogs take on Tennessee. The number shattered the previous record of 1,877 that was set in 2009, also against Tennessee. It was the first time this season there were over 1,000 fans in each game during the week. Leadoff It s no surprise that the Bulldogs have put up huge home run totals this season. What is surprising is that 17 of the 72 round trippers have been leadoff home runs. All but one of the five home runs last weekend were leadoff homers. Anna Swafford, who has hit nine home runs this season, owns a team-best six home runs. Tess Sito hit two leadoff homers last week. Georgia Stings Yellow Jackets The 20 runs that the Bulldogs against Georgia Tech last week were the most runs ever scored in the series between Georgia and Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs put up 12 runs in the first inning and never looked back, hitting five home runs on their way to the 20-1 win. In both games against Georgia Tech this season, the Bulldogs are hitting at a.468 clip with seven home runs, while slugging.871. They have also out scored the Yellow Jackets 34-2 Grand Slam Kaylee Puailoa hit her first career grand slam in Georgia s 20-1 win over Georgia Tech. After a hit by pitch and a pair of walks, Puailoa belted the home run to left field, putting the Bulldogs up 12-0 after the first inning. The grand slam was the third of the season for Georgia, as Paige Wilson hit a pair of grand slams against Radford earlier this year. Georgia s record for grand slams in a season was set in 2011 when Alisa Goler and Ashley Razey each hit two. Puailoa became just the fourth player in Georgia history to hit a grand slam. It was also the second time in program history that the Bulldogs hit a grand slam against Georgia Tech. Parking is available at the complex. 2013 Softball Game Notes Media Information & Notes A Season of Firsts for Olney Christine Olney, Georgia s only four year senior, has had several firsts this season. Her first career home run came against Delaware State. Against Georgia Tech last week, Olney hit her first home run in Jack Turner Stadium and her first multi-run home run. She continued her season of firsts against Western Carolina when she tripled off the wall in left center, the first triple of her career. Montemayor Throws A Gem Morgan Montemayor threw a gem against Georgia Tech, striking out seven of the first nine batters she faced. Through the first four batters, she threw 13 pitches, 11 of which went for strikes. In all, she allowed just one run on one hit in four innings of work. The Long Ball Through 42 games this season, the Bulldogs have hit 72 home runs, eclipsing the home run total from last season, when the Bulldogs hit 60. Four Bulldogs have double-digit home runs, compared to just one last season. Geri Ann Glasco, Tina Iosefa and Kaylee Puailoa lead the way with 13 round trippers each, followed by Paige Wilson with 11. Wilkinson in Relief Freshman Chelsea Wilkinson has been brilliant in relief this season for the Bulldogs. In 21 innings of relief work, she has allowed just seven earned runs on 15 hits and struck out 24 batters. She closed the door on Georgia Tech on last Wednesday, throwing the final inning, striking out the first two batters she faced before inducing a routine fly out of right field. She also came on to throw the final inning in the first game against Western Carolina, striking out one. A Key to Success A key to Georgia s success this season is when the Bulldogs score in a game. Georgia is 21-2 when it scores in the first inning and 25-3 when it scores first. Comparatively, the Bulldogs have lost 10 games when their opponents get on the board first. Oh Mercy Twelve of Georgia s last 19 wins have come by way of mercy rule. In the last 25 games, of which Georgia has won 19, the Bulldogs out scored their opponents 227-77 and defeated nine of their opponents by double digits and scored doubledigit runs in 12 games. In that time, the Bulldogs have hit at a.380 clip and slugged.737 with an on-base percentage of.462. The team has also hit 61 home runs, 38 doubles and seven triples in that time. Home Run = Win Owning an SEC-best 72 home runs, it is no surprise that the long ball is a key factor in Georgia s success. The Bulldogs are 24-5 when they hit at least one home run, compared to 5-8 when they do not record a home run. Among the SEC s and Nation s Best The Bulldogs rank at the top of nearly every offensive category including batting average (.350), slugging percentage (.628), hits (376), RBI (286), home runs (72) and total bases (675). The Bulldogs are second in the SEC in runs scored (313), doubles (59) and third with 12 triples. Georgia also ranks among the nation s leaders in home runs per game (1st), slugging percentage (1st), scoring (5th) and batting average (6th). On Deck The Bulldogs return home and begin five-game home stand Wednesday, April 17 against USC Upstate at 6 p.m. Georgia will then play host to Texas A&M in a three-game SEC series before facing Georgia State in the final regular-season non-conference game of the season.
