Mrs. Chausse s Physical Science Gifted Lesson Plan: Unit 7 Chemical Reactions November 1 16, 2018 Thursday, November 1, 2018 Objective: SWBAT balance a chemical equation that satisfies the Law of Conservation of Mass at 85% accuracy. Alka Selzer, Ziploc bag, water, balance, graduated cylinder, beaker Do now: Students will copy the new table of contents for the new unit Students will conduct a mini experiment on the Law of Conservation of Mass. Students will determine that the mass of the reactants is the same as the mass of the products in a chemical reaction by using Alta-Setzer tablets and water in a Ziploc bag. Students will compare the mini lab to a chemical formula on how the masses of the compounds must be the same before and after a reaction. In order to accomplish this, the same number of atoms must exist on each side of the arrow. Students will balance chemical equations after watching the teacher model a few examples. Students can work with a partner or by themselves. Homework: finish the worksheet Friday, November 2, 2018 Objective: SWBAT calculate the formula mass based on the chemical formula for various compounds after writing the formula from the name at 85% accuracy. SWBAT convert mass, molecules, and liters to moles in one-step conversions using the factor label method for dimensional analysis at 85% accuracy. YouTube, calculator, periodic table Do now: Balance two chemical equations Students will discuss the work from the previous day. Students will review the process on how to name ionic compounds, acids, and covalent compounds and the importance of knowing how to do this for the remainder of the semester Students will discuss a previous topic, isotopes, and the average atomic mass Students will calculate the formula mass of a compound after watching the teacher model two examples Students will watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvt51m0ek5c Students will create a conversion flowchart and table to show the relationship between 1 mole of a substance at the molar mass of that substance at the volume of that substance at STP and the number of molecules in one mole of that substance. Students will use the conversion chart to calculate one-step conversions using the factor label method for dimensional analysis after watching the teacher model an example for each of the three types of conversions Homework: choose three problems from each section (18 problems total)

Monday, November 5, 2018 Objective: SWBAT convert mass, molecules, and liters in two-step conversions using the factor label method for dimensional analysis at 85% accuracy. SWBAT convert mass, molecules, and liters in three-step conversions by using the molar ratio using the factor label method for dimensional analysis at 85% accuracy. Do now: Students will convert liters, molecules, or mass to moles in three problems Students will review the conversion flowchart and table to show the relationship between 1 mole of a substance at the molar mass of that substance at the volume of that substance at STP and the number of molecules in one mole of that substance. Students will use the conversion chart to calculate two-step conversions using the factor label method for dimensional analysis after watching the teacher model an example for each of the three types of conversions Students will convert from one substance to another using the molar ratio in a one-step problem Students will use the conversion chart to calculate three-step conversions using the factor label method for dimensional analysis after watching the teacher model an example for each of the three types of conversions Homework: finish worksheet Tuesday, November 6, 2018 -NO SCHOOL -ELECTION DAY GLE/Standard: Objective: SWBAT Do now: Homework:

Wednesday, November 7, 2018 Objective: SWBAT convert mass, molecules, and liters using the factor label method for dimensional analysis in a mixed practice review at 85% accuracy. Do now: Students will convert liters, molecules, or mass from one substance to another in one problem Students will complete a mixed practice review of different types of mole conversion problems in preparation for their quiz tomorrow Homework: quiz tomorrow Thursday, November 8, 2018 Objective: SWBAT take an assessment on mole conversions at 85% accuracy. SWBAT identify the type of chemical reaction based on the chemical equation at 85% accuracy. Do now: Students will get in their test taking seats. Students will take a 10-15-minute mole conversion quiz (5 problems). Students will define the six types of chemical reactions and the basic structural formulas of how their chemical equations are formatted Students will identify various examples of chemical equations as either combustion, synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, or acid/base. Homework: finish worksheet

Friday, November 9, 2018 Objective: SWBAT compare and contrast endothermic and exothermic reactions at 85% accuracy. Ziploc bags, yeast, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, baking soda, Do now: Students will identify the type of four different chemical equations Students will define endothermic and exothermic reactions Students will predict with chemical equation is endothermic based on the definition. The location of the heat and whether or not heat is absorbed in the reaction will help the students identify if it is endothermic or exothermic. Students will hold a piece of ice and write down why they think they are feeling what they are feeling as it relates to endothermic and exothermic reactions. Then share it with the person sitting next to them. As a class, we will then discuss how this relates to standing in front of a refrigerator. Students will take notes on endothermic and exothermic reactions. Students will conduct two mini labs on the reactions. Students will measure the starting temperatures of vinegar in one Ziploc bag and then add baking soda and measure the temperature every 10 seconds. They will measure the starting temperatures of hydrogen peroxide in another bag and then add yeast and measure the temperature every 10 seconds. Students will graph the data and determine which reaction was endothermic and which was exothermic based on which absorbed energy and which released it. Homework: Monday, November 12, 2018 Objective: SWBAT determine how the five factors affect the rate of chemical reactions after observing four demonstrations at 85% accuracy. HC (0.1 M, 1.0 M, 2.0 M)l, hydrogen peroxide, CuCl 2, Zn pieces, ice, thermometers, hot plate, beakers, NaCl, KI, dish soap Do now: Students will determine whether two scenarios are endothermic or exothermic Students will take notes on the factors that affect the reaction rate of chemical reactions Students will observe four demonstrations and participate in the experiments by helping time, coming closer to make the observations, and discussing the processes. The demonstrations will be for temperature, concentration, surface area, and using a catalyst. Homework: answer the six questions

Tuesday, November 13, 2018 Objective: SWBAT determine the shift in equilibrium due to a stress in temperature or concentration using Le Châtelier s Principle at 85% accuracy. Promethean Board, two 1000-mL beakers, red food coloring, one 50-mL beaker, one 100 ml beaker Do now: Students will balance an equation and convert from grams to liters using the mole ratio from the equation Students will discuss what the words equal and equilibrium mean in a Think-Pair-Share Students will define collision theory and relate it to yesterday s topic Students will observe a demonstration, and help participate with, on achieving an equilibrium using two beakers of water Students will take notes on how to use Le Châtelier s Principle and the pencil trick for temperature and concentration. In chemistry, students will need to know how pressure is also a stress on the equilibrium. If students excel in this lesson, they can be shown how to determine how pressure affects the reaction as well. Students will practice the pencil trick to determine the shifts in equilibrium for temperature and pressure stresses Homework: finish worksheet Wednesday, November 14, 2018 review study guide, periodic table Do now: Students convert three mole problems Students will review work from the previous day Students will complete the pre-lab after reviewing the procedures for the lab tomorrow Students will complete a study guide review, either with a partner or by themselves Homework: study for the test on Friday Objective: SWBAT complete a study guide review at 100% accuracy.
