Highlighting the returners are 2017 Preseason All-SEC selections senior Sydni Emanuel, junior Cortni Emanuel and sophomore Alyssa DiCarlo. The three Preseason All-SEC picks from Georgia ties for the most in the league with Florida and LSU. Cortni Emanuel earned a spot on the Top 50 Watch List for the 2017 USA Softball Player of the Year. The organization has recognized the outfielder before, as she was one of their Top 10 Freshmen of the Year and a Top 25 Finalist for the Player of the Year last season. Lu Harris-Champer enters year 17 in Athens and her 21st season overall. She holds 986 career wins, including 777 with the Bulldogs. Notes LOOKING AT 2017 Georgia has made lots of noise in the softball landscape in its 20-year history. With the same goals at hand, the 2017 season will be no different, as the Bulldogs don t plan to quiet down any time soon. Entering 2017, Georgia returns 11 letterwinners from last season s squad that earned 46 wins while appearing in Georgia s third Women s College World Series trip. Among those returning are many of Georgia s top batters, including three of its top four batting averages and a pair of pitchers with 18 combined wins. TRIO NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-SEC TEAM Three Bulldogs earned a spot on the Preseason All-SEC list with senior Sydni Emanuel, junior Cortni Emanuel and sophomore Alyssa DiCarlo receiving the recognition. Georgia tied Florida and LSU for the most honorees while Tennessee and Texas A&M followed with two each. The Preseason All-SEC Softball Team is voted on by the league s head coaches and consists of a minimum of 14 players. Each SEC head coach voted for five infielders, four outfielders, three pitchers, one catcher and one designated player/utility. No ties were broken. S. Emanuel, C. Emanuel and DiCarlo each garnered All-SEC honors at the end of last season while both Emanuels were named to the NFCA All-Region Second Team. PRESEASON SEC RANKINGS The league coaches voted Georgia seventh in the SEC Preseason Poll. The five teams above the Bulldogs each participated in last season s Women s College World Series. Georgia finished sixth in last season s final standings. 2017 SEC PRESEASON POLL 1. Florida (9) 2. Auburn (2) T3. Alabama T3. LSU (1) 5. Tennessee 6. Texas A&M (1) 7. Georgia 8. Kentucky 9. Missouri 10. Ole Miss 11. South Carolina 12. Mississippi State 13. Arkansas CORTNI NAMED TO TOP 50 WATCH LIST FOR USA SOFTBALL POY AWARD A top 25 finalist for the award one season ago, Cortni Emanuel was named to the USA Softball Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List. In 2016, Emanuel was named a top 25 finalist for USA Softball Player of the Year while the year before she was a top 10 finalist for the organization s Freshman of the Year honor. The Watch List consists of 26 seniors, 18 juniors and six sophomores while freshmen are ineligible until they compete at the collegiate level. The student-athletes represented come from 37 universities and 13 athletic conferences, as the SEC has 12 on the list. SEASON OPENERS Georgia is 16-4 all-time in season openers and 14-2 under head coach Lu-Harris Champer. In addition, the Bulldogs own a 8-1 record when they open their season at home. Georgia has lost just two home openers in program history, as the last came in 2013 against Elon. NEWCOMERS ADD DEPTH TO LINEUP Georgia adds a lot of depth to its roster with 12 newcomers joining the program. The signing class was ranked as a top-10 group according to FloSoftball while the team added junior transfer Kendall Burton, who played the past two years at UTSA, as well as early enrollee Madison McPherson, who signed with Georgia this past fall. Among the 12, nine are from the state of Georgia. Off the Field Brittany Gray Junior P Greenwood, Ind. HEAD COACH LU HARRIS-CHAMPER Head coach Lu Harris-Champer is entering her 21st season of coaching while her 17th at Georgia. Overall, Harris-Champer has accumulated 986 career wins, including 777 with the Bulldogs. She has guided the squads in her career to five Women s College World Series, nine Super Regionals and 19 Regional berths. Harris- Champer has reached 40 or more wins in 20 of 21 seasons coaching and has never had a losing overall record. CHALLENGING 2017 SCHEDULE The 2017 schedule will once again challenge the Bulldogs as they prep for postseason action. The slate features 13 NCAA Tournament teams from 2016, including three teams that joined Georgia at the Women s College World Series in national runner-up Auburn, UCLA and LSU, as well as a rematch of last year s Gainesville Super Regional with Florida. Seven opponents finished in the top 25 of the national polls with four in the top 10 while three others received votes. FAMILIAR FACES RETURN TO JACK TURNER STADIUM A few familiar faces return to Jack Turner Stadium on Opening Weekend. Syracuse assistant coaches Alisa Goler and Kristyn Sandberg both played at Georgia. Goler was an infielder in Athens from 2008-11 while Sandberg was behind the plate from 2009-12. Both helped Georgia to a pair of Women s College World Series appearances before moving on to play professional ball. Also on staff as a volunteer assistant is Miranda Kramer, a pitcher from WKU. Kramer threw 14 innings against Georgia in the 2015 Athens Regional to help the Hilltoppers to a 2-1 win, tossing 19 strikeouts on the way. Georgia went on to win both games the next day. WINNING TRADITION Since the opening season in 1997, Georgia has accumulated 892 wins, including 310 in SEC action. A majority of those wins have come under the helm of Lu Harris-Champer, 777 to be exact in her 16 years in the Classic City. The Bulldogs have had 15-straight seasons with 40 or more wins, including seven of those with 50 or more victories. The winning doesn t stop when the regular season ends, but carries on in postseason action. The team chemistry of the 2016 squad carried the Bulldogs to Oklahoma City. In 2014, the Bulldogs brought home the SEC Tournament crown after defeating Kentucky in the Championship Game. The past 15 years have also seen Georgia in a NCAA Regional while appearing in nine Super Regionals, collecting 61 wins in the program s NCAA Championship history. POSTSEASON STAPLE The Bulldogs have made themselves a mainstay in NCAA Championship action, making it to a NCAA Regional in each of the past 15 seasons. Its stellar track record into the postseason slate puts Georgia as one of 11 teams in the nation to appear in a Regional for 15 or more straight years. Within that realm, Georgia is one of three Southeastern Conference teams to produce such success. Georgia isn t just a staple in Regional fields, but also into the next round, appearing in nine Super Regionals since 2005. The Bulldogs have made it to Super Regionals the last three seasons, just one of 12 teams to do so. The pinnacle of college softball is in Oklahoma City, and Georgia made back-to-back showings at the Women s College World Series in 2009 and 2010, finishing as one of the last four teams standing in both. The Bulldogs returned in 2016 after knocking off back-to-back National Champion Florida in dramatic walk-off fashion. JACK TURNER STADIUM The Bulldog softball team will play its 14th season in the multi-million dollar Jack Turner Stadium in 2017. The grandstands hold close to 1,400 fans with additional standing room while outfield seating was added in 2015. The Jack Turner Stadium, named for the late Jack Turner thanks in part to gifts from himself and his son Jimmy Turner, has been chosen to host nine NCAA Regionals and four NCAA Super Regionals since its inception in 2004. Georgia has 389 wins since Jack Turner Stadium opened while 512-146 in all home games. Jack Turner Stadium saw its top crowd of 1,986 against Tennessee in 2013 while its top attendance in 2016 was against LSU with 1,757 fans in the stands. 2016 SEC Final Standings SEC Pct. All Pct.
