1 Lightning Safety for Fairs St. Augustine, FL, Thursday, May 12 th, 2016 Shocking Statistics Motivation Recognition Programs Safety Plan Toolkit Recognition WRN Ambassador Program Lightning delay at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC. (Photo courtesy- ESPN) 2 How does lightning form? Updraft and downdrafts in a thunderstorm transport small liquid drops above the freezing level. Hail/graupel develops. Hail collides with additional water droplets and ice particles. Electrons shear off ascending particles and collect on descending particles. Negatively charged particles are at the bottom of the storm. Positivitely charged particles rise up taller ground objects. Negative charges descent, channels of electricity meet and transfer of electricity is physically seen as lightning. 4 1
