Laboratory Notebook This is an example of what a laboratory notebook should look like. What is most important is that you use a laboratory notebook to keep notes as you do your experiment. Everything you think or do should be captured in your laboratory notebook. Good luck and have fun! Information in this blue font are not actually part of the notebook.
Science Experiment Laboratory Notebook
General Guidelines: Work should be done in ink. Do not remove any pages. Mistakes should have a simple line through them. Do not erase or use anything to cover them up. Write EVERYTHING in the laboratory notebook. You can use the book for more than one experiment.
Some suggestions: Do an experiment that you want to do One where you want to know the answer or see the results. Demonstrations, research projects, and models do NOT do as well in the judging process. Pick a project requiring repetitions.
4/23/2014 Ideas for projects for this year: How fast does grass grow?. Is it always cloudy when it rains? Why is the sky blue? Volcanos How clouds form (initials) Note: Do NOT do one of these as your Science Fair Project.
Cloudy Skies Title of Project 5/1/2014 Objective, Goal, or Question Is It Always Cloudy When it Rains? Hypothesis I think it will always be cloudy when it rains.
5/7/2014 Research I used the internet to research information about rain and clouds. Websites used: / iencefacts/weather/html /weather-htm
5/7/2014 Notes from Research Water, as a gas, is in the air. This water gas condenses in the air and forms Nimbostratus and Cumulonimbus clouds cause rain. These clouds produce rain, snow, hail, or sleet.
5/10/2014 Materials/ Equipment Laboratory Notebook Pen (not pencil) The computer to access to check if it will rain today.
Process Steps 5/10/2014 Check to see if it is going to rain today. If it is raining, go outside and see if there are clouds in the sky. Write the information in my laboratory notebook.
Observations 5/19/2014 5/20/2014
Observations 5/27/2014 It is raining lightly. There are no clouds! 6/17/2014

1/15/2015 Summary of Observations Almost every time it rained there were heavy On one of them, there were no clouds in the sky. It was a light rain on 5/27/2014
Conclusion 1/15/2015 I was wrong! It can rain with no clouds in the sky.
1/19/2015 Preparation for the Fair Worked on putting together my display board. 1/20/2015 Preparation for the Fair Continued to work on putting together my display board.
1/22/2015 Preparation for the Fair Continued to work on putting together my display board. 1/25/2015 Preparation for the Fair Talked with Mom and Dad about the fair and pre the interview with the judges.

Acknowledgements 2/15/2015 Thanks to Mom and Dad for helping me with research on the internet, buying my display board, helping me use Excel, and helping me prepare for the judge interviews.
2/15/2015 Future Work These are ideas that I might do next year: How to make snow flakes. Where does hail come from? How does water gas get in the air? Note: Do NOT do one of these as your Science Fair Project.
