Caribou Crossing (15 minutes) You are a Canadian researcher studying global warming and have been flown into Iqaluit Nunavuit, Canada north of the 63 o parallel. You have made it to the big time. As you flew over Canada s North you observed the caribou migrating across the tundra. Your first project is to design and build a caribou crossing to allow the caribou to travel safely over the melting permafrost. Permafrost is soil that is permanently frozen. Unfortunately, it is now melting due to global warming. Use booklet # 2 to design a bridge that will allow the caribou to cross over the melting permafrost. (the following will be considered when you are being evaluated) Speed at completing the task Accurate construction according to booklet # 2 maximum of 4 marks

2 2. Tundra Mobile (30 min. ) The organizers of your expedition need to transport you and your team to the caribou crossing. Use booklet # 5 to design a Tundra mobile to move your scientists to the crossing. Make sure your vehicle is motorized and that it can back out of the boggy permafrost in case you get stuck. Accurate construction according to booklet # 5 4 marks for motorized vehicle that can move forward and backward 3. Weather Station (30 min.) As a researcher you are taking daily records of temperature readings and weather forecasts in the Tundra to collect data to monitor extreme weather and plot the effects of Global Warming. Perched atop your research weather station, there is a weather measurement device to help you collect the data. Use booklet #7 to build a weather measurement device that rotates using using both a manual hand crank and a motor Accurate construction according to booklet # 7 works manually works with a motor 4 marks for the manual weather measurement device 4 marks for the motorized weather measurement device

3 4. Crane (30 min.) You need to need to unload new supplies that have just arrived via parachute from a supply plane. Use booklet # 10 to build a crane to unload the supplies. Remember, you need to make as little impact on the Tundra as possible. The Tundra is environmentally sensitive. 4 Culminating Task!! 5. Supply Pick Up (approx. 50 min.) The Canadian Government has dropped off more supplies for your expedition. Unfortunately, the tundra is too soft to drop all the supplies in the same place. Your job is to design a vehicle that can retrieve the supplies and transport them to a safe location where they can be picked up by your fellow scientists. ****Note**** - This is a time limited activity. Please ensure that you have fresh batteries in your motors so that you can complete the activity. Stage 1: Driving your vehicle up onto the permafrost and over the mucky tundra to retrieve the supplies. drive up the inclined plane on to the permafrost /10 Attempts: up the inclined plane on the first attempt 10/10 up the inclined plane on the second attempt 5/10 if you are unable to make it up the inclined plane, you may lift your vehicle up to the edge of the top of inclined plane on the edge of the tundra but you will receive no points for successfully completing the inclined plane 0/10 Stage 2: Retrieve the supplies from the drop off points you have 1 minute to retrieve the supplies from the drop off points your vehicle may move backward or forward within the 1 minute time limit

5 you may pick up your vehicle once during the 1 minute time limit to reposition your machine as you see fit your challenge is to move as many supplies as you can into the supply pick up zone Supply Pick Up Zone - 1 point for each supply case that is completely in the Blue Supply Pick Up Zone 5 Point Supply Pick Up Zone - 5 points for every supply case that is completely in the Red 5 Point Zone Food Canister should you get this supply case into the Blue Pick Up Zone you will receive 10 points and if you get this canister into the Red Pick Up Zone you will receive 25 points BONUS POINTS you will receive 3 bonus points for every polar bear that is left standing you will receive 10 bonus points for your vehicle remaining tact (all pieces are still attached to your vehicle no pieces have fallen off) there will be a 10 second warning given by the judges Stage 3: Parking your Vehicle when your 1 minute time limit is up, and the supplies are cleared as best as you can - you now have 10 seconds to park your vehicle so that at least 2 wheels are in the Arctic Circle Parking Zone you need to remember that your positioning on the Tundra is important in order to complete this last task use your one pick up wisely 25 points for parking your vehicle with two wheels situated on the Arctic Circle Parking Zone.
