3 EXPLORING COMMON SOLUTIONS FINLAND S CHAIRMANSHIP PROGRAM FOR THE ARCTIC COUNCIL Priority: METEOROLOGICAL COOPERATION Circumpolar meteorological and oceanographic cooperation will improve public safety, benefit international shipping and air traffic, and enhance Arctic climate science. By further developing meteorological cooperation, it is possible to improve monitoring and observation networks and the management of climate and waterrelated risks. Intensified monitoring on land, at sea, in the atmosphere and in space will provide better data coverage and fill geographical gaps in data collection. This leads to better services and forecasting of meteorological phenomena in the Arctic and contributes to making much-needed climate change scenarios as accurate as possible. Finland proposes to deepen meteorological and oceanographic cooperation among the Arctic States in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization.

Essential for arctic communities, businesses and authorities. Requires intensified monitoring better data coverage improved safety services and forecasting. Improved climate change scenarios that deepen our understanding of its consequences in the Arctic.

5 Meteorological cooperation HOW? implementation of WMO initiatives Arctic Polar Regional Climate Center (PRCC) and Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) Campaign intensifying the work of Sustainable Arctic Observation Network (SAON) and implementation of the EU Horizon2020 project International Arctic Observation System (INTAROS), developing IOC Arctic GOOS programme developing services related to navigation and communication in the Arctic strenghtening the use of satellite based data for research, monitoring and services

7 Satellite data service demonstration for the Arctic Sea in the FIN-YOPP project: An activity related to the Finnish chairmanship period in the Arctic Council A poject coordinated by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) Communications solution by KNL NETWORKS Ltd (Oulu, Finland) Aim and central idea: To establish and demonstrate the transfer of Near-Real-Time satellite data-based sea ice information to vessels operating in the Arctic Product chain including (a) satellite data reception at FMI s Sodankylä National Satellite Data Centre (NSDC), (b) sea ice product generation at NSDC and (c) data delivery to vessels by KNL NETWORKS Satellite data reception at Sodankylä Generation of sea ice information Product transmission 7
