HOLY CROSS COLLEGE YEAR 9 Mathematics Stage Assessment Task 1 Assessment Notification Task No: Date Handed Out Due Date Weighting Total Marks Duration: 1 Term 1 Week 6 Term 1 Thursday 22/03 Week % of Semester weeks THE TASK The assessment is in the form of an assignment that will be completed at home in your own time. It will be based on the work completed in class for Trigonometry. The method of submission is Google Doc- Shared to Mr Cobb. TOPICS ASSESSED New Century Maths 9 (AC)- Chapter 4 Trigonometry, Syllabus Link Here EQUIPMENT REQUIRED Laptop Internet Camera Phone Pens and Paper Calculator App Capable of Measuring Elevation/ Depression

Part A- Trig and Buildings (12 marks) Measure the height of two buildings using Trigonometry and your own footsteps. One building will be outside of the school and one will be at the school. Measure the angle of elevation from your observation using the Elevation Angle app and measure the distance from your observation to the building s base. Photo of Building Angle of elevation (Screenshot) Number of steps to building. Before calculating the height of the building, calculate how long your steps are by counting the number of steps over 10 metres: Number of steps to walk 10 metres: Now show some calculations to find how many metres are in each step of yours (typed or photo): Now you have enough information to calculate the heights of the two buildings you observed. Show your working out here, there must be a diagram so a photo of worked solutions is advised (2 marks each): Working out for Building 1 Working out for Building 2

Part B- Elevation and Depression (10 marks) You need to observe Centrepoint tower and another object that you can observe from an angle of depression. Using google maps calculate how far away you are from the object so that you can calculate how high or low you are relative to the object. Photo of Object Screenshot of Distance on Google Maps From Your Observation to Object Screenshot of Angle of elevation/ depression on App. Centrepoint Object of Depression

You now have enough information to work out how far below/ above each object you are. Show your working out here. (Net vertical height is needed here). (2 marks each) Working out for Centrepoint Working out for object of Depression Part C- Bearings and Travel (33 marks) You are going on a trip to two different towns in Australia. The only catch is the first town must have the same initial as your first name and the second needs to have the same initial as your surname. Using google maps and setcompass.com calculate the straight line distance (Assume flying in a plane) and the bearings on each leg of your journey: Destination Distance From Previous Town Screenshot of Bearings Tool with bearings Bearing Measure Bearing in Opposite Direction Sydney Using this information on your journey, calculate how far North/South and East/West each leg took you. Show your working out. First Leg Second Leg Third Leg Calculate the total distance travelled: Total distance travelled N/S Total Distance Travelled E/W

They say the journey is more important than the destination. Using google maps, or otherwise, find a way to reach each of your towns. You must only use trains, planes, ferries and buses. 1st Leg Starting Town Sydney Destination Method(s) of transport (With details) Duration: Cost (Show each method s cost) 2nd Leg Starting Town Destination Method(s) of transport (With details) Duration: Cost (Show each method s cost) 3rd Leg Starting Town Destination Sydney Method(s) of transport (With details)

Duration: Cost (Breakdown of each mode of transport) Total Cost of Trip Part C- Optional Extension Questions (5 Bonus Marks) While the maximum total marks for the assignment is still 55, these marks can count towards your total. Research the Sine and/or Cosine rules to find the angle formed by the arms between Sydney and the other two towns. (3 marks) Research the triangle area formula to find the area of the triangle formed by the three towns. (2 marks)
