2 DISSERTATION Title:! Re-examining the diffuse gamma-ray excess from the inner galaxy:!! Looking back at EGRET data in light of a modern Monte Carlo simulation Abstract: The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument onboard the Compton Gamma- ray Observatory (CGRO) has provided the most precise measurements of the gamma-ray sky to date. EGRET measurements of diffuse emission across the sky show an excess over commonly accepted models above 1 GeV. This GeV excess has been a topic of great debate and interest since its original discovery by Hunter et al. in This dissertation examines the ways in which GLAST simulation and reconstruction software have been modified to model EGRET. This detailed modeling has allowed exploration of the parameters of EGRET, in both its beam-test configuration and in-orbit on CGRO, in greater detail than has previously been published. The GeV excess is significantly increased when previously unaccounted for instrumental effects are considered. A re-scaled measurement of diffuse gamma-ray emission in the inner Galaxy is presented. A GALPROP model has been developed to reproduce the re-scaled observations. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE 2011-Present!!!! Indirect Detection of Dark Matter with HAWC I began working on calculating limits for HAWC to indirect detection of DM via observation of nearby dwarf galaxies with then graduate student, Pat Harding in I have worked extensively to extend the HAWC sensitivity programs to make them capable of accurately predicting HAWC s response to extended sources and arbitrary spectra Present!!!! Sensitivity Calculations for HAWC Using the Monte Carlo simulations and tools I had previously developed I created tools for the collaboration to calculate and display the sensitivity of HAWC to a variety of likely very-highenergy gamma-ray sources Present!!!! Monte Carlo Simulations of HAWC I am responsible for the generation of Monte Carlo products for use by the HAWC collaboration. In this roll I have generated a large library of extensive air shower simulations using CORSIKA on computing clusters from four HAWC related institutes. This requires the coordination of both the IT professions at each site and the development of tools to efficiently process and archive simulation runs. Furthermore, I have developed (and refined previous iterations of) the GEANT4 simulations framework used to simulate the detector response to extensive air showers and created libraries of the detector response for use by the Collaboration Present!!!! Galactic Magnetic Field simulation and analysis Currently independently previously with Prof. James J. Beatty at The Ohio State University Developed a fast Monte Carlo framework for tracking Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays in magnetic fields which was accepted as the primary tool for such simulations by the Pierre Auger Observatory. Performed analysis of Auger data using the above mentioned framework to place limits on models of the Galactic Magnetic field !!!! Temporal variability in Auger Energy Estimators With Prof. James J. Beatty at The Ohio State University Developed a method for tracking the variations of energy estimators from Auger with respect to each other. Developing tools to determine the time evolution of each energy estimator.
3 !!!! Calibration and analysis with the Fermi ACD Independently at The Ohio State University Developed a method for calibrating the response to extremely high energy deposition within the Anti-coincidence subsystem of Fermi (formerly GLAST). Currently using the calibrated response to select specific cosmic-ray nuclei and the remainder of the Fermi detector to estimate the energy of the primary cosmic-ray !!!! Calibration and development with GLAST With Prof. William Atwood at The University of California, Santa Cruz Analyzed and compared data from two accelerator beam tests of the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) prototype detector to Monte Carlo simulations. Helped optimize for speed various reconstruction algorithms within the GLAST reconstruction software. Tuned various fit parameters used in the GLAST reconstruction software by analyzing large quantities of Monte Carlo simulations to find the most accurate fits to the data !!!! Simulation and analysis with EGRET With Prof. William Atwood at The University of California, Santa Cruz Developed a detailed geometric model for the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instrument onboard the Compton Gamma-ray Observatory (CGRO) for use in its simulation. Re-calibrated EGRET detector using extensive Monte Carlo simulations and applied new calibration to a re-analysis of the diffuse gamma-ray data from EGRET. TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE Summer 2008!!!! Integration and testing of ANITA With Prof. Peter Gorham at NASAs Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility Traveled extensively to NASA s Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility where I helped with the integration of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a balloon born Ultra-high energy neutrino detector, before it was shipped to Antarctica for its second flight. Continued development of a large (32) array of USB thumb drives to be used as a storage device on ANITA. Solid state drives were needed since ANITA operates at 120,000 feet where the atmosphere is thin and standard magnetic hard drives are prone to fail. Designed a heat sink solution to conduct the heat generated by the USB drives to the primary radiator of ANITA. Summer 2003!!!! Silicon wafer testing With Researcher Luca Latronico at INFN Pisa Performed silicon wafer testing for GLAST experiment in a clean room environment !!!! Computer modeling of prototypes With Prof. William Holzapfel at The University of California, Berkeley Used CAD software to design various apparatus for use in testing and calibrating the Arc-minute Cosmology Bolometer Array Receiver (ACBAR). TEACHING AND MENTORING EXPERIENCE !!!! Mentor to Ph.D. Students With Prof. James J. Beatty at The Ohio State University Advising and directing of multiple graduate students in their research and through the completion of their Ph.D. is an important point of my position at Ohio State University. During my tenure in the Beatty group we have graduated 4 Ph.D. students with one more to defend within the semester !!!! Lab Instructor At the University of California, Santa Cruz Supported the students work in both the lab and, during office hours, work in the primary lecture of Physics 6b Electricity & Magnetism at University of California, Santa Cruz.
