2 Nonproliferation Treaty Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty Develop new instruments and methods to verify that each state meets its obligations & no nuclear material is diverted. Determine the mass, enrichment & location of fissile materials University of Michigan: (a) Igor Jovanovic (b) Zhong He (c) Sara Pozzi (d) Kim Kearfott University of Florida Jim Baciak & Andreas Enqvist
3 Jovanovic s group: Study fundamentals of filament-induced plasmas Split lens doublefilament generation Figure 1. Schematic of the experimental setup. The dual-imaging system employs a probe laser and CMOS detector for shadowgraphy, tracking the shock front produced from filament-target interaction, and ICCD for viewing emission from isolated target species in the corresponding target plasma. Species are isolated by selective bandpass (BP) filters placed in front of the ICCD. High-reflectivity (HR) mirrors allow for alignment of the probe beam used in shadowgraphy.

7 MeV Impact of Neutron Source Encapsulation (Baciak & Enqvist s group) Bare Pu-240 Bare Cf-252 Cf-252 in Cu 1.39cm Consortium Energy for Verification (MeV) Technology Using 252 Cf to measure the neutron detector efficiency as a surrogate for Pu sources in cases where the detector response is a simple function of energy. A few mm of metallic encapsulation influences 252 Cf spectrum to a degree that is measurable in safeguards systems. This also means that the average energy of a point 252 Cf spontaneous fission neutron source can easily be tailored to match any lower value. In non-linear response detectors such as the Active Well Coincidence Counter, Monte Carlo simulations can be used to calculate the encapsulation needed.
8 Summary Jovanovic s group has been developing a laser-based system for standoff isotope detection. Zhong He s group has been developing techniques for more accurate characterization of SNMs, even behind moderate shielding materials, using 3-D CZT gamma-ray imaging spectrometers. Sara Pozzi s group has been working on fast-neutron multiplicity counters. Kim Kearfott s group is developing chain-of-custody detectors using optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters UF (a) A portable neutron multiplicity counter for objects of unconstrained shapes is being investigated; (b) Study the use of 252 Cf as a surrogate for plutonium. (c) An organo-metal loaded liquid scintillation detector for gamma-neutron detection is under development. (d) Plume tracking
