Active Classrms Summer Activity: Name Game/Spelling Game Equipment/Organizatin: Alphabet physical activity task card Directins: Students use their bdies and physical activity t spell names, spelling wrds, sight wrds. Students can wrk individually, with a partner, r as a teacher-led whle class 2. Activity: Car Wash Musical Physical Activity Fun Equipment/Organizatin: Car Wash sng (any sng wuld wrk), spnges (nt necessary) Directins: As the music is n lead the students thrugh a series f mvements as they pretend t wash a car. Keep it simple by creating 2-4 mvements that are repeated. Fr this specific sng we washed different parts f the car, as we changed levels f ur bdy reaching up nt the tp f the car and getting under the car. Variatin: This activity can be dne with any sng. Keep it simple by starting with 2 mvements that yu alternate ding 8-16 times each. As yu feel mre cmfrtable add n 2 mre mvements. Add variety by ding each mvement 16 times, then 8 times, then 4 times, then 2 times, then nce. 3. Activity: Juggling Scarves Equipment/Organizatin: Juggling scarves r yu can simply use the yellw Festival bags r prduce bags. Each student will eventually need three. Directins: Hld ne scarf in right hand, tss it straight up keeping it n the right side f the bdy, let it flat, grab it with a clawing mtin using the right hand (tss, claw) Try it with the left hand With ne scarf in each hand, tss the right ne, tss the left ne, grab/claw the right ne with right hand, claw the left ne with left hand (tss, tss, claw, claw) Hld ne scarf in right hand, tss it acrss the bdy in an upward mtin t the left (imagine a big square in frnt f the bdy, tss the scarf t the upper left crner), let it flat, grab it with a clawing mtin using the left hand (tss, class) Try it with the left hand One scarf in each hand. Tss the right acrss the bdy, tss the left acrss the bdy, grab with the left, grab with the right (tss, tss, claw, claw r right, left, left, right) If yu get this far me fr the rest f the directins (kmally@uwlax.edu) 4. Activity: Mvement Chain OR Cpy Cat-Add n Equipment/Organizatin: nne needed; if space allws create a big circle s everyne can see each ther. Yu can als use prps such as scarves Directins: First persn des a mvement (add a nise if yu are brave ), everyne repeats that mvement, secnd persn des a new mvement, everyne des that mvement then the first mvement, third persn des a new mvement, everyne des that mvement, the secnd mvement and the first mvement. Cntinue until everyne has added n a mvement. 1
Active Classrms Summer Activity: Old MacDnald has a Bdy and The (Bdy Part) n the Bdy Equipment/Organizatin: Nne, students wuld need t knw the tw sngs Old MacDnald and The Wheels n the Bus Directins: Using either tune substitute the name f a bdy part fr the animal n the farm r the item n the bus, and then d the mvement instead f the sund r the mtin f the item n the bus. Head nd-nd Arms flap-flap Shulders up-dwn Knees knck-knck Hips wiggle-wiggle Get creative and use all bdy parts 6. Activity: Jumping Jack Flash Equipment/Organizatin: The simple versin f this game des nt require any equipment, but yu culd use flash cards fr math, spelling, sight wrds, etc. Start with a whle class activity where all f the students play with/against the teacher. Everyne starts facing away frm the teacher. Directins: Everyne begins by secretly chsing a number f fingers t hld up, trying t keep it s n ne sees it (start with ne hand but can try tw r this wuld be where yu use a flash card). Once everyne has their number decided upn, the teacher (and students) cunts 1, 2, 3, and n 3 the students jump and turn (remember they begin with back t teacher) s they are facing the teacher (r partner, grup). Nw they add the number f fingers that the teacher has t the number that they have and then they d that many f a designated physical activity such as jumping jacks r jumping ver an imaginary line (if there is adequate space yu can d ther kinds f jumps such as tuck jumps, straddle jumps, jumping ver r ff f r nt bjects). If yu are using flash cards with wrds they wuld d the activity fr each letter f the wrd. 7. Activity: Indr Nature Trail Equipment/Organizatin: N equipment is necessary but yu culd use pictures Directins: Lead the students n a jurney thrugh nature, telling a stry that it typically made up n the spt. As we see different items in nature shw that picture (r describe the item if nt using pictures) and ask the students t pretend t be that item and mve like that item. As they d the mvements d a little sprts casting by using what yu see in yur stry, and by using rich vcabulary t describe what yu are seeing. Variatins: This activity can be dne with any kind f theme such as the z, farm, rain frest, playgrund, etc. 8. Activity: Deck f Cards Equipment/Organizatin: Deck f cards, designate each suit as a mvement fr example: 2
Active Classrms Summer 2014 Hearts Jump side t side, frnt t back Spades Crab Pushups Clubs Desk Pushups Diamnds 180 degree jumps Directins: Turn ver a card and students d the mvement that crrespnds t the suit and number. Jkers are a shrt break. 9. Activity: Create-a-pattern Equipment/Organizatin: I like t use either strips f different clrs f paper r physical items in the classrm. Designate each clr r item as a specific mvement. Directins: Create a pattern starting with an A-B pattern where A represents ding ne mvement a certain number f times (I like t start with 8 repetitins), and B represents a different mvement. Fr example A culd be hp n right, and B culd be hp n left. As the activity prgresses change the mvements and change the pattern Fr Example: Red culd mean jump and clap, Blue culd mean sit and stand up, Green culd mean big arm circle, Yellw culd mean knees t elbws. Next create a pattern such as Red-Blue-Red-Green. Students wuld d that pattern repeating each individual mvement 4 t 8 times, befre mving n t the clr/mvement in the pattern. As they get better at this reduce the number f repetitins and see if they can d the pattern by memry. Classrm Items: Yu culd simply designate a mvement t different items yu already have in the classrm such as pencils, stapler, water bttles, etc. 10. Activity: Rhythmical Chres Equipment/Organizatin: N equipment needed Directins: Start by chsing r letting the students chse fur chres they d at hme r at schl (try t get them t chse chres that require different kinds f mvements). Just as with the activity abve put the mvements in a pattern r rder and d the Chres Dance. Fr example make the bed, sweep the flr, take ut the garbage, and pick up my rm. Each chre wuld have a mvement that represents that chre try t get the students t use their entire bdies in diverse ways where they make big, grss mvements. Variatins: Use a different idea ther than chres such as rhythmical sprts r rhythmical playgrund. 11. Activity: Reverse it! Equipment/Organizatin: Nne needed unless yu want t use visuals f the wrds Directins: The student s jb is t d the reverse r ppsite f what yu ask them t d. Fr example yu culd say: Jump frward 5 big jumps, Reach and tuch the sky as yu cunt frm 1 t 10, Walk slwly backwards 6 steps, then walk quickly frward 6 steps, etc. 12. Activity: Clr Pass it On 3
Active Classrms Summer 2014 Equipment/Organizatin: Un cards r yu can create a deck f slips f different clred paper. Similar t Deck f Cards, assign each clr a physical activity. If using Un cards yu culd designate special tasks fr the different kinds f cards. Directins: Every students gets a card, they d the mvement that crrespnds t the clr and number n their card, and then pass it n t the next persn. 13. Activity: Stp and Scribble (r write, r add, r subtract, etc.) Equipment/Organizatin: Paper and pencil Directins: Identify a mvement that the students d until the time is up. Fr example they culd d elbws t knees fr secnds. When yu give the stp signal, they stp and then yu give them a wrd t spell r a math prblem t cmplete. Then they put their pencils dwn and d anther activity fr a designated amunt f time until they have practiced all their spelling wrds. 14. Activity: Slve it-mve it Equipment/Organizatin: Set f math prblems and a pencil Directins: Wrking individually, with a partner, r as a whle class, students slve a prblem (e.g., 6+8) and then d that many f a designated mvement. Cntinue with the next prblem. Yu can keep it simple and d the same mvement each time r yu can vary the mvement. 15. Activity: Air Writing Equipment/Organizatin: Nne needed Directins: Whenever yu want students t think befre they write r talk yu can ask them t write their answer in the air using a bdy part (elbw, ft, head, knee, thumb). T add variety yu culd tell them t write it n the ceiling, n the flr, r write it big r small. 16. Activity: Active Art Add n (culd be mdified t Add n Stry Telling) Equipment/Organizatin: Depending n grup size yu culd use the whitebard r sheets f butcher paper. This culd als be dne individually r with a partner. Directins: This activity is just like Stp and Scribble, but instead f spelling r ding a math prblem they draw a picture. During each shrt break students add n t their drawing. After the break they shuld d anther mvement r repeat the same mvement. If ding this with a partner r grup they simply take turns drawing. 17. Activity: D Three With Me Equipment/Organizatin: Nne needed; can be dne as a whle class, in small grups r with a partner. Directins: Shw and tell three mvements and then invite thers t d these three mvements with yu. Fr example tuch the flr, turn a circle, click yur heels r run in place, sit dwn/get up, ski jump. 4
Active Classrms Summer Activity: Petry in Mtin Equipment/Organizatin: pems that include actin wrds. Or use an actin verb and write simple pems using wrds that rhyme with that actin wrd. Here are tw simple examples using the actin wrds run and hp. Let s run, run, run And have sme fun, fun, fun Let s run, run, run Under the sun, sun, sun I like t hp I dn t want t stp I will hp until I pp, and drp and begin t flp Directins: After yu have reviewed the pem add mtins t it t make it cme alive. Fr example when I d the pem abut running I first ask them t shw me all the different ways they culd run in spt. Then I chse ne way and we all d it. This will be hw we all d the first run. Then I chse anther way and this will be hw we all d the secnd run. I repeat fr the third run. Next I ask them t shw me what they d that they think is fun (nt what fun lks like but what they are ding that they enjy). I chse three different mtins t represent fun. I wuld review the first and secnd lines. An easy way t remember the mtins is t call them by the name f the student. Fr example if the first run was first dne by Will I wuld say d the Will. The third line is a repeat f the mtins yu did fr the first line. Then fr the final line I ask them t shw me different things they like t d when it is sunny ut. Again I chse three different mtins that we use fr ur active pem. We d the entire pem and nce they get it I like t d it faster r slwer. 19. Activity: Haikus Equipment/Organizatin: Pre-made example f haikus that use actin based vcabulary. Directins: Read the Haiku tgether and then either let them d their wn mtins r brainstrm different ideas that the class then agrees upn. Finally perfrm the haiku all tgether. Nw let students create. Examples: Swimming and splashing; Kicking as fast as I can; Burr its cld ut here The Kangar jumps; the snake wiggles n the grund; the mnkey swings by A plane sared abve; twisting, weaving thrugh the air; I landed safely A hrse gallped by; the grund was muddy and wet; I tripped and fell dwn I went fr a run; I was running up a hill; I rlled dwn the hill My feet are springy; the trampline was buncy; jumping, flying high 5
Active Classrms Summer Activity: Blast Off Equipment/Organizatin: Identify 2 r mre physical activities such as twist, swim, squat, sky t tes etc. Directins: Students d 10 f each activity, fllwed by 9, fllwed by 8 cntinuing until they get t 1 f each activity. Yu can divide the class up s they d every ther. Fr example everyne with a birthday between January and June will d the even numbers, and everyne with a birthday between July and December will d the dd numbers. Or if yu wanted yu culd have them simply wrk with a partner taking turns t d each number. 21. Activity: The Great Alphabet Hunt Equipment/Organizatin: Letters f the alphabet r a binder f the alphabet each page has a letter and a picture f smething that begins with that letter Directins: Teacher shws the students a letter and then takes them thrugh an imaginary mvement based jurney that relates t that letter/picture. Fr example, A is fr apply that we reach high up t grab. Keep reaching as high as yu can t get apple that are at the very tp f the tree. Nw bend dwn lw t put the apples in yur basket. Nw lets pretend that yu are the apple sitting n the grund. Nw yu start rlling dwn the hill until yu get t the bttm and turn int wiggly applesauce. B is fr bicycle. Shw me what yu wuld like if yu were riding yur bike while lying n yur back. Nw cycle fast, nw slw. C is fr etc. I dn t have a specific stry but instead just d it imprmptu. The key hwever is t use rich vcabulary that affrds ding mvements in a variety f different ways (fast, slw, high, lw, big, small, frward, backward, sideways, straight, curvy, using entire bdy r bdy parts, etc.). IDEA: Have the kids add a page t the bk s eventually they each have their wn ABC mvement bk. 22. Activity: Emtinal Mvements Equipment/Organizatin: nne needed unless yu want t use pictures r icns f emtins Directins: This is a very simple activity where yu ask kids t shw yu what they wuld lk like if they were ding a specific activity while feeling a certain emtin. Fr example, shw me what yu wuld lk like if yu were marching and feeling sad, r climbing stairs while yu were excited, r sitting dwn/standing up while yu were feeling angry, etc. If space allws have students practice the lcmtr mvements (walk, run, jump, hp, gallp, slide, skip, leap) while explring their emtins with their entire bdy. 23. Activity: Yes Game Equipment/Organizatin: Nne needed Directins: This is a very simple, kind f gfy activity that is easy t d anywhere fr any amunt f time. Teacher says, Lets, students respnd, Yes, Lets. Fr example: Lets pretend t fly Yes, lets pretend t fly r - Lets reach and jump Yes, lets reach and jump r Lets d the pny Yes, lets d the pny. I suggest that yu have the students make up sme fun dance mves (give each mve a name) they can d right by their desks. This wuld be useful fr any f the activities n this handut! 6
Active Classrms Summer Activity: Mvement Sentences Equipment/Organizatin: Slips f paper with mvement wrds and descriptrs r mdifier wrds. I like t make a bunch f sets f these s I can give ne set t a few students. I als like t clr cde and put the mvement wrds in ne bag and the descriptr/mdifier wrds in anther bag s they are easier t rganize. Directins: I wuld start this as a full class teacher directed activity but when using it with students wh can read and rganize themselves I like t give small grups f students their wn set f wrds. Depending n hw yu are using it the teacher and/r students wuld chse fur wrds frm the mvement wrd bag. I like t put all f the wrds upside dwn t start, and then fur wrds are chsen and placed in a rw s they can be read as a mvement sentence. Next the students d the mvement sentence. Once they have the mvements identified, I like t add sme rhythm t this activity by having students repeat each mvement 4-8 times t a steady fur-cunt beat. The entire mvement sentence turns int a fur mvement, 32 cunt phrase. I wuld d this a few times and then I wuld add the descriptr/mdifier wrds. As with the mvement wrds students wuld randmly chse ne wrd, which they use t mdify their mvement sentence. Anther versin is t chse fur descriptr wrds, ne fr each mvement wrd. Fr example a mvement wrd sentence might be: Dart Spin Freeze Flp. Then a descriptr wrd culd be slwly. Or if they chse fur descriptrs yu might get: Slwly Dart Dreary Spin Slppy Freeze Sudden Flp. 25. Activity: Hey Everybdy Lets Make a Shape Equipment/Organizatin: Nne needed unless yu want t use visuals fr the shapes and sizes. This can be dne n the white bard r SMART bard. Or can even be dne with an bject that represents varius shapes/sizes. Directins: This is a student respnse activity. Teacher: Hey everybdy lets make a shape Students: Shape, shape, what shape? Teacher: Lets make a square fllwed by the students using their bdy t make a square. Fr variatin: Teacher prmpts them t change their square by making it smaller r bigger, by making it with entire bdy r bdy parts, by making it high r lw, by making it standing up, kneeling, sitting r lying n the grund, r by making it with a friend. Cntact Infrmatin: Thanks fr playing with me! Kristi Mally, PhD, Directr Physical Educatin Teacher Educatin University f Wiscnsin-La Crsse (wrk) kmally@uwlax.edu 7
