2 Talks will include: Keynote Speaker - Rida Farouki Quaternions, Spatial Pythagorean Hodographs, and Rotations in R 3 and R 4 Quaternions, the first example of a non-commutative algebra, arose as a by-product of Hamilton's failed attempt to construct an "algebra of triples". Hamilton envisaged the quaternions as the "new language of science and technology" but their place was usurped by vector analysis, an algebraically crude and overtly pragmatic subset of the quaternion algebra. A simple quaternion expression automatically generates Pythagorean quartuples of polynomials, thus yielding an elegant rotation invariant characterization of Pythagorean hodographs in R 3. Quaternions provide compact and intuitive descriptions for rotations in R 3, a fact that has lead to a renewed interest in them for robotics, computer graphics, animation, and related fields. Quaternions also describe rotations in R 4, whose strange properties provide a cautionary tale against extrapolating our geometric intuition from R 2 and R 3 to Euclidean spaces of higher dimension. Is Zero = Pi = Infinity? A Tall Tale Glenn Pico (ARC) We will look at several paradoxes starting with Gabriel s Horn and eventually come to unsettling result that zero is equal to Pi which is also equal to infinity and bagels that disappear in to the depths of three space. In an effort to figure it all out, we will explore sequences of functions, different types of convergence and conditions for which we can pull a limit inside an integral. Hopefully in the end the audience will see that certain results from calculus that had seemed intuitively obvious are really a leap of faith. Pythagorean Triples Where Can You Find Them? Paul Andre (ARC) We all know about Pythagorean triples (and regularly draw upon this knowledge when creating word problems) but rarely do we consider really large values. An intriguing graph of Pythagorean triples shows that these triples are actually concentrated in regularly-spaced curved regions which have very interesting properties. We will investigate the nature of the curves and their equations, and use this information to determine very large triples satisfying predetermined constraints. (ie a b, a 2b, etc)

3 A Stroll Through Calculus Tony Barcellos (ARC) Even non-mathematicians know that calculus is super-hard math for brainiacs, but the reality is that the basic concepts of calculus can be conveyed to those with a decent command of algebra. With some easy examples of rates of change and areas of enclosed regions, even the fundamental theorem of calculus begins to look intuitive. Geometry/Trigonometry Potpourri. David Fontana (ARC) David will talk about a variety of topics including - are construction of the pentagon and decagon and related concepts?, algebra of 'quotients' involving radicals..., arcs/circles/inscribed angles/similarity. Given adequate time he will also talk about some topics in trigonometry involving inscribed and circumscribed circles, particularly of isosceles triangles.. STATWAY Michelle Brock (ARC) Come learn more about a Carnegie Foundation Project STATWAY an integrated Algebra and statistic Course. Participants will experience a STATWAY sample lesson. Teaching Mathematics with Aloha! Brandon Muranaka(ARC) Teaching mathematics involves more than just the knowledge of mathematics. It involves a combination of the ability to understand where our students are, where we want them to go, and a plan of how to get them there. In this talk I plan to describe how I have incorporated teaching techniques into my classroom that embody the spirit of aloha. Teaching with aloha isn't necessarily any different from what many of us do, but this talk with emphasize having fun teaching mathematics, exploring new directions we can take ourselves in the classroom, and utilizing our own creativity to keep our practices fun and exciting. Publisher presentations TBA
