1 Dominican International School ALGEBRA I COURSE SYLLABUS GRADE LEVEL: 8 SCHOOL YEAR: TEACHER: Christiaan Basson cbasson@dishs.tp.edu.tw COURSE DESCRIPTION Algebra I is the course that students are required to make the transition from arithmetic to the new world of symbols. Symbolic reasoning and calculations with symbols are central in this course. The Common Core State Standards are adopted for students and teachers to achieve higher expectations. Through the study of Algebra I, students develop an understanding of the symbolic language of mathematics. In addition, algebraic skills and concepts are developed and used in a wide variety of problem-solving situations. It gives students a solid foundation for exploring and understanding Geometry and Algebra concepts that will prepare students to move from middle school to high school mathematics. TEACHING STRATEGIES Students need some concrete approaches to enhance their understanding of the concept. Therefore, different modes of instruction would be provided for this purpose. Visual learning, interactive learning, and differentiated instruction will be provided in the class. For example, using manipulates such as color tiles, chips, or balance scale will be helpful. These tools can make abstract concept visible. Digital technologies are also provided in their classroom activities. Besides, making connections with their earlier math study or life experience is another approach to make their math learning meaningful. Another goal of the course is to teach students how to communicate in mathematics. Students need to listen, speak, read and write math just like another language. They will be asked to utilize this math language to express the real-life problem, to construct a model to solve the

2 problem, and to find the solution of the problem. Throughout the learning process, hope they can enjoy this efficient and very powerful language. ASSESSMENT Students will be assessed with classroom participation, homework, quizzes, tests and quarter exams. Homework will be given every one or two lessons. Quizzes or tests will be given weekly basis to help identify any weakness students may have, and which topics need additional enhancement. Quarter Exams will be given at the end of each quarter. The quarter grade will based on 30% of homework, project, and participation, 30% of quizzes and tests, 30% of quarter exam, and 10% of deportment. HOMEWORK RULES Always present the assignment neatly and clearly. Show all the solutions step by step when answering questions. Late homework will be graded by taking proportional deductions. The homework grade will be taken 10% off if students hand in one day late. Late homework from one to two days will be deducted by 20%, from two to three days will be deducted by 30%, and so on. Students who are absent with good reasons will be allowed to make up the missing work without any deductions. CLASSROOM RULES Follow school rules. Follow instructions. Use common sense.
