7 The problem which has been investigated in the working out of this Thesis is that of a High School to accomodate five hundred pupils. It was determined to design a building which would contain a study hall large enough to accomodate the entire student body, and a sufficient number of recitation rooms, lecture rooms and laboratories. This arrangement seemed desirable as it relieves the instructorsj of the necessity of watching others than those in his or her recitation, and tends in less degree to distract the minds of those who are studying. Other rooms desired were - principals office, teachers room, library, gymnasium and exhibition hall, drawing room, museum, rooms for lockers and. bicycle racks, lunch rooms and toilets. In as much as stair climbing on the part of High School pupils is one not to be disregarded, it was determined that the building should contain but two stories and a basement; that the recitation and lecture rooms and laboratories should all be on the same floor as, or the floor above, the Study Hall, thus reducing stair-climbing to a minimum. The gymnasium is located in the basement floor; this room is provided with lockers and baths, over which is a gallery with three hundred and thirty permanent seats. The intention is that this room should be used as an exhibition hall, an ample stage being provided for the purpose. All of the rooms for the bestowal of the pupils hatsm coats or cloaks and. bicycles, and the lunch rooms are on this floor. The toilet rooms throughout the building communicate only indirectly with the main halls through disconnecting corridors. The boys toilets are confined to the basement floor, but those for the

8

9 2 girls are on both the basement and first floors. On the first or main floor is the study hall with five hundred and six seatings. The principals office is at the head of one stairway and adjoins the library. Five recitation rooms and two lecture rooms, besides the teachers room and a store room, are upon this floor. The hall is so wide as to prevent its congestion at the time of change of classes, and to furnish a pleasant place for pupils and teachers to gather before school hours. On the second floor, are the chemical, physical and biological laboratories, lecture rooms, and work shops, five recitation rooms, the museum and drawing room. The museum and the drawing room are lighted by sky lights, while the biological laboratory receives light on the Uorth and East sides. The extreme length of the building is two hundred and seventyfive feet, the extreme depth, one hundred thirty three. The material pf construction is to be brick with terra cotta trimmings for the walls and tile for the roof.
