Motivated by various spin-1/ ompounds like Cs CuCl 4 or κ-(bedt- TTF) Cu (CN) 3, we derive a Raman-sattering operator à la Shastry and Shraiman for various geometries. For T=0, the exat spetra is omputed by Lanzos algorithm for finite-size lusters. We perform a systemati investigation as a funtion of J /J 1, the exhange onstant ratio: ranging from J = 0, the well known square-lattie ase, to J /J 1 = 1 the isotropi triangular lattie. We disuss the polarization dependene of the spetra and show how it an be used to detet preursors of the instabilities of the ground state against quantum flutuations. Highly frustrated magneti systems are highly suseptible to quantum spin flutuations and instabilities towards ompeting ground states. The triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet with spin S = 1/ onstitutes a paradigm of that lass of systems. In that ontext, it is interesting that experimental investigations of the Cs CuCl 4 [1] and κ-(bedt-ttf) Cu (CN) 3 [] materials, whih an be both desribed as a first approximation by a triangular lattie with spatially anisotropi exhange ouplings, indiate exoti behaviors. Exoti behaviors inlude either the realization of a spin-liquid ground state or a magnetially ordered phase with a magneti exitation dispersion strongly renormalized ompared to the lassial spin-wave. Indeed, reent numerial studies based on series expansion [3] have found that frustration manifests itself rather diretly in the spin exitations of arhetype models of two-dimensional frustrated spin systems. A softening of the magnon exitations in a broad region of the reiproal q spae is observed as a quantity, f, whih parametrize the level of frustration, is inreased. Sine, within a semi-lassial piture, the effet of frustration is to bring about the effet of ompeting ground states, it is expeted that the spin exitations out of a semilassial long-range ordered ground state are diret tell-tale indiators of the presene of frustrating interations. In this paper we explore the possibility that frustration an also be investigated via the two-magnon density of states at zero wavevetor measured
2 by polarized inelasti magneti Raman sattering. The rest of this paper is organized as follows: in the first Setion we present the derivation of the sattering operator, then we disuss its form for various polarizations. In the last part we present the assoiated Raman spetra obtained by exatdiagonalization of finite-size lusters.. Sattering operator We first onsider the Hubbard model on the anisotropi triangular lattie: H = H K + H U = ) t ij ( i,σ j,σ + h.. + U n i, n i, (1) i i,j,σ where t ij is the hopping from a site i to a neighboring site j, σ is the spin degree of freedom, and and are the usual annihilation and reation operators. For the ase onsidered here, there are two distint hopping integrals, t 1 and t, along the orresponding diretions shown in Fig. 1. i+e 3 i+e E out t,j t 1,J i 1 i+e 1 φ θ E in x Figure 1. Geometry of the lattie and polarization vetors. Left: The dashed lines represent the oupling J, the thik lines are for the exhange oupling J 1. Right: Definition of the polarization vetors by two angles φ and θ. At half-filling and in the large-u limit, the system is desribed (to seond order in t/u) by an effetive spatially anisotropi Heisenberg Hamiltonian: H eff = i,j J ij S i S j () where the different exhange oupling along eah diretion is due to the differene in the hopping amplitude, i.e J 1 = 4t 1 /U, J = 4t /U. Raman sattering onsists of an inoming photon (of energy ω i ) sattered into an outgoing photon (of energy ω f ), involving different manifold of eletroni states having zero or one double-oupany. These transitions depend on the polarizations (referred as E in and E out ) of the inoming and outgoing photons. Following the early work of Fleury and Loudon [4] and Shastry and Shraiman [5], we derive an effetive sattering
3 spin Hamiltonian desribing this problem. The α-omponent of the eletroni hopping urrent operator is: ( ) j α ǫk (q) = i e [ iq (r+ ν k α ) σ (r + ν) σ(r) σ (r) σ(r + ν) ] (3) r,ν=±(e 1,e,e 3 ) where q = k f k i is the momentum transfer, and ǫ k the band-energy. In what follows we take the most general set of polarization vetors, as shown in the right panel of Fig. 1: { osφ ˆx + sin φ ŷ (4) osθ ˆx + sin θ ŷ The Raman sattering proess involves an energy transfer Ω = ω f ω i, the momentum transfer being set to zero. Therefore, we restrit ourselves to the assumption k f k i 0, and we have: j E in = i osφ [ ( t 1 r r+e1 h. ) ( t r r+e h. ) ( + t 1 i 3 sin φ [ ( t r r+e h. ) ( + t 1 j E out = i osθ [ ( t 1 r r+e1 h. ) ( t r r+e h. ) ( + t 1 i 3 sin θ [ ( t r r+e h. ) ( + t 1 The Raman sattering operator is given by the seond order formula, i and f being respetively the initial and final state, µ being an intermediate state: f M r i = [ ] f j Eout µ µ j E in i µ + f j E in µ µ j E out i ǫ µ ǫ i +ω f (6) ǫ µ ǫ i ω i Following the same algebra steps as in [5], and restriting i and f to the manifold of singly oupied states, and intermediate states µ to the manifold of one double 1 oupany, we use the identity, S 4 i S j = 1 σ,σ i,σ j,σ j,σ i,σ, and obtain the sattering operator in terms of spin operators. We note that within our approah the total sattering operator only ontains terms of the form: O ν t ν U S i S i+eν (7) From Eq. (6) we find that the sattering Hamiltonian prefators whih will be in front of Eq. (7) depend on the polarization vetors orientation. These prefators are proportional to the exhange oupling J, therefore, in its general form, the total sattering operator will depend on both J 1 and J. 3 (5) 3. Polarizations The two angles φ and θ with respet to the x-axis (see Fig. 1) define the polarizations involved in the sattering proess. Therefore the sattering operator depends on a
4 projetor P ν (θ, φ) that defines the polarization set-up. The Raman operator takes the form: H LF (θ, φ) i {J 1S i S i+e1 osθ osφ 4 +J S i S i+e [ os(θ + φ) + 3sin(θ + φ) + 4 sin θ sin φ ] (8) + J 1 S i S i+e3 [ os(θ + φ) 3sin(θ + φ) + 4 sin θ sin φ ]} Whih an be written in the ompat form: H LF (θ, φ) i,ν J ν P ν (θ, φ)s i S i+eν (9) In order to ompare with the square-lattie ase, we now fous on the following polarization geometries: H LF ( 5π 6, π 6 ) i J 1 [S i S i+e1 + S i S i+e3 ] H LF ( 5π 6, π 3 ) i J 1 [S i S i+e1 S i S i+e3 ] (10) When the diagonal bond J is 0, the first line of Eq. (10) is the A 1g Raman operator, while the seond line gives the B 1g Raman operator, both on a square lattie. Most importantly, we note that the sattering operators depend on the ratio J 1 /J if one takes: H LF ( π 6, 5π 6 ) i [J 1S i S i+e1 + J S i S i+e ] H LF ( π 6, π 3 ) i [J 1S i S i+e1 J S i S i+e ] We would like to attrat the attention of the reader to the fat that the standard parallel polarization does not give a straightforward A 1g -like sattering operator as it is the ase for the square lattie, but a linear ombination of Eqs. 10 and 11. (11) 4. Results As a first step in exploring the Raman sattering in the Heisenberg S = 1/ anisotropi triangular lattie antiferromagnet, we perform exat-diagonalizations for the Raman operator Eq. (9). While Raman sattering studies on triangular lattie ompounds like obaltites have been arried out [6], these have foused on phonons, and there are yet no systemati study of polarization dependent eletroni Raman spetra. Hene, our aim at this stage is not to obtain a quantitative desription of the sattering spetra for a speifi material, but rather identify the key qualitative features emerging in the Raman spetrum of the anistropi triangular lattie, possibly to motivate Raman studies and to onnet with reent neutron data [1], NMR [] and angle-resolved photoemission [7]. Motivated by the suesses of exat-diagonalization to identify the essential qualitative features of the Raman spetrum on the square lattie [8, 9], and in order to ompare with these well-known results, we explore in this study the behaviour of a 16-site luster as the frustrating J oupling is inreased from zero. The results are summarized in Fig.. The general trend observed in these plots is that a softening progressively develops as the system beomes more frustrated. The bottom left panel of Fig. shows, for J = 0, the

The bottom (top) left panel would orrespond to A 1g (B 1g ) polarization on the square lattie in the ase J = 0). well known zero A 1g Raman sattering on a square lattie, sine the sattering operator ommutes with the Hamiltonian [9]. As J inreases non-ommuting ontribution to the sattering intensity inreases and the spetrum develops more struture. For the bottom right panel, a weak intensity if observe beause the sattering operator does not ommute with the Hamiltonian even for J = 0. From the Hamiltonian in Eq., it is obvious that the ground state will depend on the ratio J /J 1, ranging from a Néel-like order on the square lattie when J = 0, to a three sublattie long-range order for J = J 1 [10, 11, 1]. These different type of order are haraterized by different magnon dispersions, therefore the Raman spetra is expeted to depend on J /J 1. In a reent paper, Zheng et al. [3] showed, using series expansions, that the magnon dispersion for the anisotropi triangular lattie Heisenberg model exhibits a roton-like minimum. This loal minimum sits at the (π, 0) point for a square lattie with one diagonal bond and is getting softer as the J -diagonal frustrating oupling inreases. In the ase of the standard square lattie, for the B 1g hannel with rossed polarizations, the eletromagneti field ouples to exitations along the (π, 0) diretion. We note from [3] that this softening is a multi-magnon proess that annot be aptured to lowest order in a 1/S expansion. However, sine we are using exat-
6 diagonalization whih, by its nature, treats proesses for the length sale onsidered exatly, we are able to detet indiations of this softening. For speifiity, onsider the B 1g hannel in the top left-hand panel of Fig.. A signature of the softening of the magnon exitation is learly manifest as the frustration ratio f = J /J 1 is inreased from zero, with a shift of the spetral weight, and the main peak moving from ω 3J 1 when J = 0 to ω 0.6J 1 when J = 0.8J Conlusions and perspetives The results presented here show how frustration an dramatially alter the Raman spetrum of an otherwise non-frustrated system. In partiular, we observe a frustrationdriven spetral downshift, the landmark feature of frustrated systems. This shift is another indiator of the frustration-indued softening of the magnon dispersion reently predited by others. From a stritly theoretial point of view, the analysis above sets the stage for a more omplete approah. Some exat-diagonalizations on larger luster and a spin-wave approah inluding magnon-magnon interations, along the lines pursued for the square lattie [13, 14], are urrently being arried out.
