4 ODEN FOR ERIODIA L TITLE S This boo k lists a se t o f unique, four-letter code s or ODEN for the title s of scientific periodicals as an aid to th e storag e an d retrieva l o f information, a n ai d i n the preparatio n o f bibliographie s o r compilation s of references, and an aid in general communication involving references to published material. Th e use of such a code was proposed by Dr. harles Bishop (American Documentation 4, 5 4 (1953) ) wh o als o privatel y pub - lished a lis t o f nearl y code s in Unde r hi s direction, both the siz e of the list and use of the syste m grew until in 1961, at Dr. Bishop's suggestion, custody and responsibilit y fo r maintainin g a list o f some 4000 codes wa s assume d b y AST M ommitte e E-1 3 o n Absorption Spectroscopy. Th e lis t wa s expande d t o nearly 20,000 codes and titles as published herewith. In addition, a mechanism has been established for supply - ing codes for new periodicals or previously uncoded titles and to issue these as annual supplements t o this book. Dr. Bishop' s paper s wer e concerned with complet e reference system s involving volume and pag e numbers and years as well as the title codes. ommittee E-1 3 is concerned only with maintaining the periodical title code which is the heart of-various readily recognizabl e sys - tems. erhap s th e mos t commonl y used forma t gives the title code first, followed by volume and page number and finally the year. Any system requires minor variations t o mee t specia l problems, but a reliable, uniqu e set of title codes is essential i n every case. It i s the aim of this book and subsequent supplement s t o provide a reliable dictionary of ODEN for this purpose. ertain convention s and rules were necessary i n th e preparation o f these code s and lists. Fo r mos t efficien t use o f th e book, on e shoul d b e familia r wit h th e following: 1. Th e periodica l title as it appear s o n the cove r of the journal is used for assigning ODEN. Normally articles, conjunctions, an d preposition s are ignored. 2. Th e first letter o f the code is always the first letter of th e firs t principa l wor d o f th e title. Othe r letters ar e th e firs t letter s o f other importan t words or other letter s in such words as may be necessary with attention paid to mnemonic combinations in so far as possible. 3. Foreig n publications are coded under their foreign titles or transliterations thereof. 4. Englis h translation s o f foreig n periodical s ar e coded under their English titles with the country of origi n included in the title listing. 5. Onl y title s o f periodical s ar e give n four-lette r codes. ublication ca n be at irregula r o r infrequent intervals bu t at least two issues under the same title are required t o qualify. Non-periodicals or one-time publication s receive a differen t code (se e below). 6. I f abbreviation s o r acronym s ar e involved, th e complete meanings are supplied in the listin g of titles. 7. Th e letter "X" is used to indicate "United States" at th e beginnin g o f a title, i.e. XNM B fo r United States Naval Medical Bulletin. The on e exception i s fo r United States atent whic h is coded as USXX. 8. atent s are coded by two letters designating th e country involve d followe d b y "XX". Thu s French atent is FRXX. 9. Th e code "BOOK" i s reserved for indicating that the reference is to a book. An alternate sugges - tion has been to use the first eight letters of the author's nam e together wit h a code for the publisher. For example, DOBRINER-I i s a coded reference to page 63 of a book by Dobriner published b y Interscienc e ublishers, Inc. i n A list o f two-letter code s for publishers is supplied later. 10. Non-periodical s or one-tim e publications suc h a s proceedings o f a symposium, the minute s o f a meeting or a collection of papers are coded with a ODE N consistin g o f tw o digit s an d tw o letters. Th e cod e bears n o mnemonic or othe r relation t o the publication bu t serves to identify it vi a th e index. When such a publicatio n becomes a periodic o r annual issue under essenti - ally the sam e name, it i s given a regular four - letter code. This book contains four separate listing s as follows: A. A list o f the four-lette r ODE N an d periodica l titles arrange d i n alphabetica l orde r o f th e ODEN. ages 1 to 193. B. A list of the numero-alphabetic ODEN and nonperiodical titles arranged in numero-alphabetical order of the ODEN. ages 19 4 to A list o f periodical title s and ODE N arrange d in alphabetica l orde r o f th e TITLES. age s 214 to 496. D. A list o f non-periodica l title s an d ODE N ar - ranged i n alphabetica l orde r o f the TITLES. ages 497 to 516. The alphabetical arrangements o f titles ignore articles, conjunctions and preposition s in th e determinatio n of

5 order. Thi s bring s togethe r title s o f lik e importan t words. Letters i n the uppe r corners of the page s assist in locating particular titles or ODEN rapidly. It wil l be note d tha t us e ha s bee n mad e o f IBM card s an d equipment t o generat e thes e listings. Becaus e o f th e limitations i n printabl e character s o n th e IB M used in this work, some obvious conventions have been necessary. Onl y capita l letter s ar e available. A slan t line i s use d t o indicat e bot h a parenthesi s an d a n apostrophe and commas are used to indicate quotatio n marks. Thus the title Bottettino dell'istituto d i atologia del libro "Alfonso Gallo" (Rome) print s a s BOLLET - TINO DELL/ISTITUT O D I ATOLOGI A DE L LIBRO,,ALFONS O GALLO,, /ROME/. It is obviou s that th e name s of all periodical s hav e not bee n code d an d include d i n thi s boo k an d tha t many new titles will be forthcoming. To cope with this situation an d preserv e the uniquenes s of codes already assigned, a singl e coordination cente r has been set up to make new ODEN assignments and to publish these as supplement s o n a regula r basis. Anyon e desiring ODEN fo r new or uncoded publication titles should supply the followin g information: 1. The complet e title as it appear s o n the cove r of the publication. If it is published in English, the title shoul d be English. I f i t i s published i n a foreign lanugage, the foreig n languag e title, o r a transliteration, should be provided. I f it is an English translatio n o f a foreig n journal, th e English title should b e used with the language or countr y o f original publicatio n indicated i n parentheses. 2. Includ e complete information about abbreviations or acronyms that may be used in the title. This is include d parentheticall y i n th e listing s o f title. 3. Occasionally, two different periodicals have identical titles. When this occurs, it i s necessary t o add the name of the cit y or country o f publication o r some other identifying fact that can be included in the listing to differentiate them. 4. I f th e publicatio n i s non-periodical, pleas e indi - cate this and include the nam e of the grou p or organization responsible and the date and place of th e meeting. If list s of titles are submitted, i t woul d be of considerable hel p i f the y wer e arranged i n alphabetica l orde r and spac e provided fo r adding the four-lette r code s to the original paper. If the titles of the periodicals or nonperiodicals have been printed i n hemical Abstracts List of eriodicals (an y issue since 1956), on e need only t o make reference to this via the following simple convention: Give the pag e number, then a letter ( A or B) to indicate th e colum n on that page, th e numbe r of th e title counting from th e top o f the column and the year of the publication in parentheses. Thus, for example, the title Scientific American coul d b e indicate d b y th e notation 319 A8 (61) for it is found as the 8th title from the top o f the left-hand column on page 31 9 of the publication. Not e that some issues carry three columns per pag e an d so, fro m lef t t o right, the y woul d b e designated b y letter s A, B an d. Also, coun t onl y titles that ar e indicated b y projecting to the lef t fro m their particular column. Scientific American can also be found as 26113(56). A similar convention may be used to refe r t o title s i n NFSAI S (Nationa l Federatio n o f Science Abstractin g an d Indexin g Services ) lis t o f January er e onl y a singl e colum n pe r pag e simplifies suc h a notation.
