1 ASMPH YL5 MODULE 2: THE CELL MODULE Module Syllabus for the Medical Cluster MODULE DESCRIPTION This module introduces the medical student to the basic unit of the human body, the cell. An understanding of the cell, its structure, substructures and biological processes is essential before any discussion on higher organizational structures (e.g. tissues and organs) is undertaken since this forms the foundation of subsequent discussions on normal and abnormal processes in the human body. This syllabus describes the details of the Medical Cluster of the Curriculum. MODULE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of the module, the learners should be able to explain the following concepts and apply them in the analysis of clinical case studies. 1. The structure and function of components of the cell. 2. The structure and function of the major biomolecules of the cell. 3. The concept of internal environment. 4. The cell membrane and transport processes on it. 5. The structure and function of the cytoskeleton and the extra-cellular matrix. 6. The principles of signal transduction. 7. The generation of membrane electrical potentials and synaptic transmission. 8. The basics of electromyography and nerve conduction velocity. 9. The process of enzyme action and its regulation. 10. The process of heredity and genetics. 11. The proper construction and use of pedigree diagrams. 12. The life cycle of the cell and its differentiation. LEARNING STRATEGIES: Lectures and classroom discussions Laboratory sessions Small group discussions and group reports Individual and group assignments FACULTY COORDINATOR Nina Rosario L. Rojas, Ph.D. (module coordinator): nrojas at ateneo.edu.
