Catalog Course Description: This course presents a survey of basic biological principles with a strong emphasis on biochemistry, cell biology and genetics. Topics include: bio-molecular and cell structure and function, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, DNA replication, protein synthesis, Mendelian genetics, Gene expression, mitosis, meiosis, embryology, tissues, organismal diversity and classification. This course is primarily designed for students pursuing careers in science, medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and other health fields requiring a strong foundation in biology. Together BI-005 and BI-006, Biology of Organisms, provide students with the basic biology core curriculum for transfer. b. Class Schedule Course Description: This course is one of a two-semester sequence (BI-005 & BI-006) designed for Science majors. Course topics include cellular structure and biochemical processes. BI 5 fulfills part of the transfer requirement of one year of major's introductory biology. c. Semester Cycle (if applicable): N/A d. BI Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and principles of basic biology. BI Demonstrate knowledge of essential life processes such as metabolism, photosynthesis, respiration, sensitivity, digestion, circulation, reproduction, ecology, evolution, and behavior. b. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental form and function of organismal systems. BI Identify and explain basic anatomical and physiological characteristics of life systems. c. Demonstrate the ability to operate fundamental biology laboratory instrumentation (e.g. microscopes) and work independently when following laboratory protocol. 05/01/ of 5

ENG 001A - Develop ideas coherently in writing through the drafting process. ENG 001A - Write thesis statements, topic sentences, and ideas in an organized way in multi-page essays. e. Demonstrate an understanding of bond theory: ionic, covalent, hydrogen and Van der Waals interactions. CH 001A - Distinguish between different types of chemical bonds. f. Demonstrate the ability to relate molecular interactions to electron orbital theory and bonding theory. Demonstrate an understanding of REDOX reactions and their relationship to electronegativity. The structure and function of biological molecules. 3. Membrane structure and function. 4. Cell structure and function. 5. Cellular respiration and fermentation. 6. Bioenergetics. 7. Photosynthesis including: light reactions, the Calvin cycle, cyclic and non-cyclic electron flow, C4 and CAM plants. 8. DNA replication and the genetic material of organisms. 9. Cellular and organismal reproduction: mitosis and meiosis. 10. Mendelian genetics: patterns of heredity. 11. Gene expression: from gene to protein 12. Regulation of gene expression 13. Plant reproduction. 14. Embryonic development. Lab: (if the "Lab Hours" is greater than zero this is required) a. Microscopic structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. b. Diffusion processes related to cell function and analysis of diffusion products. c. Analysis of protein and generation of a protein standard curve. d. Enzyme function relative to ph, temperature and enzyme concentration. e. Making an X/Y graph. f. Photosynthesis experiments: paper chromatography of photosynthetic pigments and generation of an absorption spectrum. g. Microscopy and modeling of mitosis and meiosis. h. Gram staining of bacteria. i. Drawing microscopic structures from prepared slides. j. Modeling DNA metabolism reactions: transcription, translation, and replication. k. Writing formal laboratory reports: generation, graphical representation and analysis of experimental data. Course Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Apply the scientific process. 2. Develop laboratory techniques (such as light microscopy, recording experimental data, and an understanding of principles of laboratory safety). 3. Explain the major cellular processes in eukaryotes and prokaryotes, the two major classifications of cells. 6. Describe the relationship between genetics and evolutionary theory. 10. Collect and analyze laboratory data and prepare lab reports. c. Describe the basic chemistry and energy exchanges of living systems. d. Recognize cell structures and discuss their functions. e. Explain the workings of DNA, RNA and protein synthesis. f. Describe how mutagenic agents affect DNA structure and function. g. Describe virus structure and function. h. Explain basic genetic engineering and biotechnology methods. i. Explain embryonic development and differentiation. j. Describe gametogenesis, chromosome abnormalities and genetic probabilities. k. Analyze allelic interactions and patterns of inheritance. l. Demonstrate creative thinking, writing and problem solving. 11.
