1 2014 Crop Year Fertilizer Sales Report MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE This report is based on the tonnage of fertilizer reported from licensed dealers that has been either distributed OR sold in Minnesota 1. Each registrant under section 18C.411 and each company licensed under section 18C.415 must file an annual tonnage report for the previous year ending June 30 with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), on forms provided or approved by the MDA, stating the number of net tons of each brand or grade of fertilizer, soil amendment, or plant amendment distributed in Minnesota or the number of net tons and grade of each raw fertilizer material sold or distributed in Minnesota during the reporting period. (Minnesota Statute 18C.421) Prior to using this information, please be aware of the following: Fertilizer sold during a given year does not necessarily mean that the materials were used or land applied during that time period. On-farm storage has been increasing. This allows producers to purchase and store fertilizer products for future use when fertilizer products are readily available and/or at reasonable prices. Sales information may not accurately reflect fertilizer use in a specific county. The accuracy of the sales information is influenced by the location of the dealership and the location of the purchaser. If the farm is near a county boundary or straddles county lines, the seller may be reporting incorrect information. Some farming operations have fields scattered across multiple counties but the dealership may not know all the details necessary to accurately report on a county level. Example: In this report, Lincoln County reported annual sales of only 23,000 tons and 230,000 acres of major crops (corn, beans, wheat and hay). Neighboring Pipestone County reported annual sales of 44,000 tons despite having less crop acreage (211,000 acres). This large discrepancy can only be explained by inaccurate sales recording. Clustering the sales data from neighboring counties removes the geographical biases. Regionally, this data becomes more accurate and the statewide sales data is very accurate. 1 Fertilizer can be reported as distributed or sold. Fertilizer sales does not equate to fertilizer applied. Fertilizer can be purchased one season and applied in another season. Fertilizer can be purchased in one county and applied in another county. 1
