1 A NEW CHARACTERIZATION OF CALABI COMPOSITION OF HYPERBOLIC AFFINE HYPERSPHERES XINGXIAO LI axiv: v1 [math.dg] 5 Jan 2014 Abstact. In this pape, we mainly pove a theoem with a coollay establishing two chaacteizations of the Calabi composition of hypebolic hypesphees, whee the second chaacteization i.e., the coollay) has been given via a dual coespondence theoem ealie but now we would like to use a vey diect method. Note that Z.J. Hu, H.Z. Li and L. Vancken also gave a chaacteization of the 2-facto Calabi composition in a diffeent manne. keywods and expessions: hypebolic affine sphees;calabi composition;chaacteization;educibility of Riemannian manifolds AMS Classification: 53C Contents 1. Intoduction 1 2. Peliminaies The equiaffine geomety of hypesufaces The multiple Calabi poduct of hypebolic affine hypesphees 5 3. A chaacteization of the Calabi composition 8 Refeences Intoduction As we know, affine hypesphees ae the most impotant objects studied in affine diffeential geomety of hypesusufaces, dawing geat attention of many geometes. In fact, affine hypesphees seems simple in definition but they do fom a vey lage class of hypesufaces, the study of which is fuitful in ecent twenty yeas. Fo example, the poof of the Calabi s conjectue [13], [14]), the classification of hypesphees of constant affine cuvatues [21], [22], [11]), and in [10] the complete classification of locally stongly convex hypesufaces with paallel Fubini-Pick foms as a special class of hypebolic affine hypesphees fo some ealie patial esults, see [1], [4], [9]). As fo the geneal nondegeneate case, thee also have been some inteesting patial classification esults, see fo example the seies of published papes by Z.J. Hu etc: [6], [7] and [8]. In 1972, E. Calabi [2]) found a composition fomula by which one can constuct new hypebolic affine hypesphees fom any two given ones. The pesent autho has genealized Calabi constuction to the case of multiple factos See [17], published in Chinese). Late in 1994 F. Dillen and L. Vancken [3] genealized Calabi oiginal composition to any two pope affine hypesphees and gave a detailed study of these composed affine hypesphees. They also mentioned that thei constuction applies to the case of multiple factos but with no detail of this. In 2008, in ode to establish thei late classification in [10] mentioned above, Z.J. Hu, H.Z. Li and L. Vancken poved a chaacteization of the Calabi composition of hypebolic hypesphees [5]) by special decompositions of the tangent bundle. We would like to emak 1
2 2 XINGXIAO LI that, by using the simila idea of [5], H.Z. Li and X.F. Wang has in a way chaacteized the so called Calabi poduct of paallel Lagangian submanifolds in the complex pojective space CP n [16]). In a pevious pape, we explicitly defined the Calabi composition of multiple factos of hypebolic hypesphees, possibly including some point factos viewing as 0-dimensional hypebolic hypesphees, and made it in detail fo the computation of the basic affine invaiants of this composition. In this aticle, by using those basic affine invaiants, we pove a theoem see Theoem 3.1) which povides a new and moe natual chaacteization of the Calabi composition of multiple hypebolic hypesphees. In the case of affine symmetic factos this chaacteization tuns out to be much moe simple see Coollay 3.2). Acknowledgement The autho is gateful to Pofesso A-M Li fo his encouagement and impotant suggestions duing the pepaation of this aticle. He also thanks Pofesso Z.J. Hu fo poviding him valuable elated efeences some of which ae listed in the end of this pape. 2. Peliminaies 2.1. The equiaffine geomety of hypesufaces. In this subsection, we bief some basic facts in the equiaffine geomety of hypesufaces. Fo details the eades ae efeed to some text books, say, [15] and [20]. Letx : M n R n+1 beanondegeneatehypesuface. Thentheeaesevealbasicequiaffineinvaiants of x among which ae: the affine metic Bewald-Blaschke metic) g, the affine nomal ξ := 1 n gx, the Fubini-Pick 3-fom the so called cubic fom) A 3 T M n and the affine second fundamental 2-fom B 2 T M n. By using the index lifting by the metic g, we can identify A and B with the linea maps A : TM n EndTM n ) o A : TM n TM n TM n and B : TM n TM n, espectively, by gax)y,z) = AX,Y,Z) o gax,y),z) = AX,Y,Z), gbx),y) = BX,Y), 2.1) fo all X,Y,Z TM n. Sometimes we call the coesponding B EndTM n ) the affine shape opeato of x. In this sense, the affine Gauss equation can be witten as follows: RX,Y)Z = 1 gy,z)bx)+by,z)x gx,z)by) BX,Z)Y) [AX),AY)]Z), 2.2) 2 whee, fo any linea tansfomations T,S EndTM n ), [T,S] = T S S T. 2.3) Each of the eigenvalues B 1,,B n of the linea map B : TM n TM n is called the affine pincipal cuvatue of x. Define L 1 := 1 n tb = 1 B i. 2.4) n Then L 1 is efeed to as the affine mean cuvatue of x. A hypesuface x is called an elliptic, paabolic, o hypebolic) affine hypesphee, if all of its affine pincipal cuvatues ae equal to one positive, 0, o negative) constant. In this case we have i BX) = L 1 X, fo all X TM n. 2.5) It follows that the affine Gauss equation 2.2) of an affine hypesphee assumes the following fom: RX,Y)Z = L 1 gy,z)x gx,z)y) [AX),AY)]Z), 2.6) Futhemoe, all the affine lines of an elliptic affine hypesphee o a hypebolic affine hypesphee x : M n R n+1 pass though a fix point o which is efe to as the affine cente of x; Both the elliptic affine hypesphees and the hypebolic affine hypesphees ae called pope affine hypesphees, while the paabolic affine hypesphees ae called impope affine hypesphees. Fo each vecto field η tansvesal to the tangent space of x, we have the following diect decomposition x TR n+1 = x TM) R η.
3 A NEW CHARACTERIZATION OF CALABI COMPOSITION 3 This decomposition and the canonical diffeentiation D 0 on R n+1 define a bilinea fom h 2 T M n and a connection D η on TM n as follows: D 0 XY = x D η X Y)+hX,Y)η, X,Y TMn. 2.7) 2.7) can be efeed as to the affine Gauss fomula of the hypesuface x. In paticula, in case that η is paallel to the affine nomal ξ, the induced connection := D η is independent of the choice of η and is efeed to as the affine connection of x. In what follows we make the following convention fo the ange of indices: 1 i,j,k,l n. Let {e i,e n+1 } be a local unimodula fame field along x with η := e n+1 paallel to the affine nomal ξ, and {ω i,ω n+1 } be its dual cofame. Then we have connection foms ωb A, 1 A,B n+1, defined by n+1 dω A = ω B ωb A, dωa B = C=1 ω C A ωb C, ωn+1 0. Futhemoe, the above invaiants can be espectively expessed locally as g = g ij ω i ω j, A = A ijk ω i ω j ω k, B = B ij ω i ω j, 2.8) subject to the following basic fomulas: g ij A ijk = 0 the apolaity), 2.9) i,j A ijk,l A ijl,k = 1 2 g ikb jl +g jl B ik g il B jk g jk B il ), 2.10) A l ij,l = n 2 L 1g ij B ij ), 2.11) l whee A ijk,l ae the covaiant deivatives of A ijk with espect to the Levi-Civita connection of g. Then Define k g ij = H 1 n+2 hij, ξ = H 1 n+2 en ) h ijk ω k = dh ij +h ij ω n+1 n+1 h kj ω k i h ik ω k j. 2.13) Then the Fubini-Pick fom A can be detemined by the following fomula: A ijk = 1 2 H 1 n+2 hijk. 2.14) Define the nomalized scala cuvatue χ and the Pick invaiant J by 1 χ = g il g jk 1 R ijkl, J = Aijk A pq g ip g jq g k. nn 1) nn 1) Then the affine Gauss equation can be witten in tems of the metic and the Fubini-Pick fom as follows R ijkl =A ijk,l A ijl,k )+χ J)g il g jk g ik g jl ) + 2 gik A jlm,m g il A jkm,m )+ A m ik n A jlm A m il A jkm). 2.15) The following existence and uniqueness theoems ae well known: Theoem 2.1. We ae done. Given c R and a Riemannian manifold M d,g), denote by S M d,g)c) the set of all TM d -valued symmetic bilinea foms A Γ 2 T M d ) TM d )), satisfying the following conditions: 1) Unde the metic g, the coesponding 3-fom A Γ 2 T M d ) T M d )) is totally symmetic, that is, A Γ 3 T M d )); 2) Affine Gauss equation, that is, fo any X,Y,Z XM d ) RX,Y)Z = cgy,z)x gx,z)y) [AX),AY)]Z). 2.20) Moeove, by adding to S Md,g)c) the following so called apolaity condition 3) t g A) = 0, we define Fom Theoem 2.1 and Theoem 2.2, we have S Md,g)c) = {A S Md,g)c), t g A) 0}. Motivated by Theoem 2.2, we intoduce the following modified equiaffine equivalence elation between nondegeneate hypesufaces: Definition 2.1. Let x : M n R n+1 be a nondegeneate hypesuface with the affine metic g. The Calabi composition x : M n R n+1 of points and s hypebolic affine hypesphees x α : M nα R nα+1, 1 α s, is affine symmetic if and only if each positive dimensional facto x α is symmetic. The next example will be used late: Example 2.1. Given a positive numbe C 0, let x 0 : R n0 R n0+1 be the well known flat hypebolic affine hypesphee of dimension n 0 which is defined by x 1 x n0 x n0+1 = C 0, x 1 > 0,,x n0+1 > 0. In the next section we shall pove as the main esult that a locally stongly convex affine hypesuface x : M n R n+1 is locally the Calabi composition of some points and hypebolic affine hypesphees if and only if the above conditions 1), 4) and 5) hold. 3. A chaacteization of the Calabi composition We ae mainly to establish a necessay and sufficient condition fo a locally stongly convex hypebolic hypesphee locally to be the Calabi composition of seveal hypebolic affine hypesphees, possibly including point factos. It tuns out that this special chaacteization theoem is needed in some elated impotant classifications.
9 A NEW CHARACTERIZATION OF CALABI COMPOSITION 9 Theoem 3.1 The Main Theoem). A locally stongly convex hypebolic hypesphee x : M n R n+1, with the affine metic g and the Fubini-Pick fom A ΓT M n T M n TM n ), is locally affine equivalent to the Calabi composition of some hypebolic affine hypesphees, possibly including point factos, if and only if the following thee conditions hold: 1) The Riemannian manifold M n,g) is educible, that is M n,g) = R q M 1,g 1 ) M s,g s ), q +s 2, 3.1) whee M α,g α ), α = 1,,s, ae ieducible Riemannian manifolds; 2) Denote M 0 = R q and by A γ αβ, 0 α,β,γ s, the TM γ-component of the estiction of A to TM α TM β. Then A γ αβ 0 if the oiented tiple α,β,γ) is not one of the followings: 0,0,0), α,α,0), α,0,α), 0,α,α), α,α,α). 3) Fo each α = 1,,s, the holonomy algeba h α of M α,g α ) acts on A 0 αα tivially: h α A 0 αα = 0, o equivalently, fo any p = p 0,p 1,,p s ) M n and fo all X α,y α,z α,w α T pα M α, it holds that A 0 αα RMα X α,y α )Z α,w α )+A 0 αα Z α,r Mα X α,y α )W α ) = ) Poof. Since ou consideation is local hee, we suppose that M n is connected and simply connected. The necessay pat of the theoem is clealy fom Poposition 2.3. To pove the sufficient pat, we fist note that, the affine mean cuvatue L 1 of a hypebolic affine hypesphee is a negative constant. Claim: M n must have an Euclidean facto R q, q > 0, in its de Rham decomposition 3.1). In fact it suffices to show that M n would be ieducible if q = 0. To do this we suppose that s > 1. Then fo non-vanishing X TM 1 and Y TM 2, we have by the affine Gauss equation 2.6) that 0 =RX,Y)Y = L 1 gy,y)x gx,y)y) [AX),AY)]Y) = L 1 gy,y)x, 3.3) whee we have used the fact that AY)Y) = AY,Y) TM 2 and AX)Y) = AX,Y) = 0 due to the condition 2) in the theoem. Clealy 3.3) is not possible since L 1 < 0 and Y 0. This contadiction poves the claim.
