An uppe bound fo the numbe of pefect matchings in gaphs Shmuel Fiedland axiv: v [math.co] 6 Ma 2008 Depatment of Mathematics, Statistics, and Compute Science, Univesity of Illinois at Chicago Chicago, Illinois , USA 6 Mach, 2008 Abstact Wegivean uppeboundon thenumbeofpefect matchings in anundiectedsimple gaph G with an even numbe of vetices, in tems of the degees of all the vetices in G. This bound is shap if G is a union of complete bipatite gaphs. This bound is a genealization of the uppe bound on the numbe of pefect matchings in bipatite gaphs on n+n vetices given by the Begman-Minc inequality fo the pemanents of (0, ) matices Mathematics Subject Classification: 05A5, 05C70. Keywods and phases: Pefect matchings, pemanents, hafnians. Intoduction Let G = (V,E) be an undiected simple gaph with the set of vetices V and edges E. Fo a vetex v V denote by degv the degee of the vetex v. Assume that #V is even. Denote by pefmatg the numbe of pefect matching in G. Ou main esult states that pefmatg v V((degv)!) 2deg v, (.) We assume hee that 0 0 = 0. This esult is shap if G is a disjoint union of complete bipatite gaphs. Fo bipatite gaphs the above inequality follows fom the Begman-Minc inequality fo the pemanents of (0, ) matices, conjectued by Minc [4] and poved by Begman [2]. In fact, the inequality (.) is the analog of the Begman-Minc inequality fo the hafnians of (0, ) symmetic of even ode with zeo diagonal. Ou poof follows closely the poof of the Begman-Minc inequality given by Schijve [6]. 2 Pemanents and Hafnians IfGisabipatitegaphonn+nveticesthenpefmatG = pemb(g), wheeb(g) = [b ij ] {0,} n n istheincidencematixofthebipatitegaphg. ThusV = V V 2 ande V V 2, whee V i = {v,i,...,v n,i } fo i =,2. Then b ij = if and only if (v i,,v j,2 ) E. Recall that the pemanent of B R n n is given by pemb = σ S n n i= b iσ(i), whee S n is the symmetic goup of all pemutations σ : n n. Vice vesa, given any (0,) matix B = [a ij ] {0,} n n, then B is the incidence matix of the induced G(B) = (V V 2,E). Denote by n := {,...,n},m+ n := {m+,...,m+ Visiting Pofesso, Fall Winte 2008, Belin Mathematical School, Belin, Gemany
n} fo any two positive integes m,n. It is convenient to identify V = n,v 2 = n + n. Then i := n j= b ij is the i th degee of i n. The celebated Begman-Mincinequality, conjectued by Minc [4] and poved by Begman [2], states pemb n ( i!) i. (2.) A simple poof Begman-Minc inequality is given [6]. Futhemoe the above inequality is genealized to nonnegative matices. See [, 5] fo additional poofs of (2.). Poposition 2. Let G = (V V 2,E) be a bipatite gaph with #V = #V 2. Then (.) holds. If G is a union of complete bipatite gaphs then equality holds in (.). Poof Assume that #V = #V 2 = n. Clealy, pefmatg = pemb(g) = pemb(g) = pemb(g) pemb(g). Note that the i th ow sum of B(G) is the degee of the vetex n+i V 2. Apply the Begman-Minc inequality to pemb(g) and pemb(g) to deduce (.). Assume that G is the complete bipatite gaph K, on + vetices. Then B(K, ) = J = {}. So pefmatk, =!. Hence equality holds in (.). Assume that G is a (disjoint) union of G,...G L. Since pefmatg = L i= pefmatg i, we deduce (.) is shap if each G i is a complete bipatite gaph. i= Let A(G) {0,} m m be the adjacency matix of an undiected simple gaph G on m vetices. Note that A(G) is a symmetic matix with zeo diagonal. Vice vesa, any symmetic(0, ) matix with zeo diagonal induces an indiected simple gaph G(A) = (V, E) on m vetices. Identify V with m. Then i, the i th ow sum of A, is the degee of the vetex i m. Let K 2n be the complete gaph on 2n vetices, and denote by M(K 2n ) the set of all pefectmatchesink 2n. Thenα M(K 2n )canbeepesentedasα = {(i,j ),(i 2,j 2 ),..,(i n,j n )} with i k < j k fo k n. It is convenient to view (i k,j k ) as an edge in K 2n. We can view α as an involution in S 2n with no fixed points. So fo l 2n α(l) is second vetex coesponding to l in the pefect match given by α. Vice vesa, any fixed point fee involution of 2n induces a pefect match α M(K 2n ). Denote by S m the space of m m eal symmetic matices. Assume that A = [a ij ] S 2n. Then the hafnian of A is defined as hafna := α={(i,j ),(i 2,j 2),..,(i n,j n)} M(K 2n) k= n a ik j k. (2.2) Note that hafna does not depend on the diagonal enties of A. Let i j 2n. Denote by A(i,j) S 2n 2 the symmetic matix obtained fom A by deleting the i,j ows and columns of A. The following poposition is staightfowad, and is known as the expansion of the hafnian by the ow, (column), i. Poposition 2.2 Let A S 2n. Then fo each i 2n hafna = a ij hafna(i,j) (2.3) j 2n \{i} It is clea that pefmatg = hafna(g) fo any G = ( 2n,E). Then (.) is equivalent to the inequality hafna 2n i= ( i!) 2 i fo all A {0,} (2n) (2n) S 2n,0 (2.4) Ou poof of the above inequality follows the poof of the Begman-Minc inequality given by A. Schijve [6]. 2
3 Peliminaies Recall that xlogx is a stict convex function on R + = [0, ), whee 0log0 = 0. Hence j= t j j= log t j t j logt j, fo t,...,t R +. (3.) j= Clealy, the above inequality is equivalent to the inequality Hee 0 0 =. ( j= t j ) P j= tj P j= tj j= t tj i fo t,...,t R +. (3.2) Lemma 3. Let A = [a ij ] {0,} (2n) (2n) S 2n,0. Then fo each i 2n (hafna) hafna i hafna (hafna(i,j)) hafna(i,j). (3.3) j,a ij= Poof Let t j = hafna(i,j) fo a ij =. Use (2.3) and (3.2) to deduce (3.3). To pove ou main esult we need the following two lemmas. Lemma 3.2 The sequence (k!) k,k =,..., is an inceasing sequence. Poof Clealy, the inequality (k!) k < ((k+)!) k+ is equivalent to the inequality (k!) k+ < ((k +)!) k, which is in tun equivalent to k! < (k +) k, which is obvious. Lemma 3.3 Fo an intege 3 the following inequality holds. (!) (( 2)!) 2 < (( )!) 2. (3.4) Poof Raise the both sides of (3.4) to the powe ( )( 2) to deduce that (3.4) is equivalent to the inequality Use the identities (!) ( )( 2) (( 2)!) ( ) < (( )!) 2( 2).! = ( )!, ( )! = ( )( 2)!, 2( 2) = ( )( 2)+( ) 2, ( ) 2 = (+)( 2) to deduce that the above inequality is equivalent to ( )( 2) (( 2)!) 2 < ( ) (+)( 2). Take the logaithm of the above inequality, divide it by ( 2) deduce that (3.4) is equivalent to the inequality This inequality is equivalent to Clealy ( )log+ 2 log( 2)! ( +)log( ) < 0. 2 s := ( )log ( )log +2( 2 log( 2)! log( )) < 0 fo 3. (3.5) = ( )log(+ ) < ( ) =. 3
Hence (3.5) holds if Recall the Stiling s fomula [3, pp. 52] 2 log( 2)! log( ) < 2. (3.6) Hence Thus logk! = 2 log(2πk)+klogk k + θ k 2k fo some θ k (0,). (3.7) log( 2)! 2 < log2π( 2) 2( 2) +log( 2) + 2( 2) 2. log2π( 2) log( 2)! log( ) < +log 2 2 2( 2) + 2( 2) 2. Since e x is convex, it follows that +x e x. Hence log2π( 2) log( 2)! log( ) < 2 2( 2) + 2( 2) 2. Note that + 2( 2) 2 < 0 fo 3. Theefoe log2π( 2) log( 2)! log( ) <. (3.8) 2 2( 2) Obseve next that that the function log2πx 2x side of (3.8) is a deceasing sequence fo = 3,...,. Since log2π 3 is deceasing fo x > e 2π. Hence the ight-hand 2 3 = , it follows that the ight-hand side of (3.8) is less than 0.5 fo 5. Theefoe (3.5) holds fo 5. Since we deduce the lemma. s 3 = log 9 6 < 0, s 4 = log < 0 The aguments of the Poof of Lemma 3.3 yield that s, = 3,..., conveges to. We checked the values of this sequence fo = 3,...,00, and we found that this sequence deceases in this ange. We conjectue that the sequence s, = 3,... deceases. 4 Poof of genealized Begman-Minc inequality Theoem 4. Let G = (V,E) be undiected simple gaph on an even numbe of vetices. Then the inequality (.) holds. Poof We pove (2.4). We use the induction on n. Fo n = (2.4) is tivial. Assume that theoem holds fo n = m. Let n = m. It is enough to assume that hafna > 0. In paticula each i. If i = fo some i, then by expanding hafna by the ow i, using the induction hypothesis and Lemma 3.2, we deduce easily the theoem in this case. Hence we assume that i 2 fo each i 2n. Let G = G(A) = ( 2n,E) be the gaph induced by A. Then hafna > 0 is the numbe of pefect matchings in G. Denote by M := M(G) M(K 2n ) the set of all pefect matchings in G. Then #M = hafna. We now follow the aguments in the poof of the Begman-Minc theoem given in [6] with the coesponding modifications. 4
2n (hafna) 2nhafnA() = j 2n \{i,α(i)},a ij+a α(i)j = i= 2n (hafna) hafna(2) (4) i= ( hafna i (3) = j,a ij= (hafna(i,j)) hafna(i,j)) ( 2n ) 2n i hafna(i,α(i) )) i= ( 2n ) 2n i i= i= 2( (( j )!) ) j ) i= j 2n \{i,α(i)},a ij=a α(i)j =0 j 2n \{i,α(i)},a ij+a α(i)j =2 (( j 2)!) ( j!) 2 j ) )) 2( j 2) (5) = ( 2n ) 2n i ( j!) i= j= i 2n \{j,α(j)},a ij=a α(i)j=0 (( j )!) ) 2( j ) (( j 2)!) i 2n \{j,α(j)},a ij+a α(i)j= i 2n \{j,α(j)},a ij+a α(i)j=2 (6) We now explain each step of the poof.. Tivial. 2. Use (3.3). ( 2n ) 2n i i= (7) = j= ( (j!)2n 2 j 2 j ( 2n ( i!) 2n i= 2 i ) (8) ) 2 j )) 2( j 2) 2( )( j ) 2( ((j )!) )) j ) = 2n ( i!) i= 2 i ) 2nhafnA. 3. The numbe of factos of i is equal to hafna on both sides, while the numbe of factos hafna(i,j) equals to the numbe of α M such that α(i) = j. 4. Apply the induction hypothesis to each hafna(i,α(i)). Note that since the edge (i,α(i)) appeas in the pefect matching α M, it follows that hafna(i,α(i)). Hence if j 2n \{i,α(i)} and j = 2 we must have that a ij +a α(i)j. 5. Change the ode of multiplication. 6. Fix α M and j 2n. Then j is matched with α(j). Conside all othe n edges (i,α(i)) in α. j is connected to j vetices in 2n \{j,α(j)}. Assume thee ae s tiangles fomed by j and the s edges out of n edges in α\(j,α(j)). Then j is connected to t = j 2s edges vetices i 2n \{j,α(j)} such that j is not connected to α(i). Hence thee ae 2n 2 (2t+2s) vetices k 2n \{j,α(j)}such that j is not connected to k and α(k). Theefoe, fothis α and j we havethe following tems in (5): i 2n \{j,α(j)},a ij=a α(i)j=0 ( j!) )( 2 j (( j )!) i 2n \{j,α(j)},a ij+a α(i)j= (( j 2)!) i 2n \{j,α(j)},a ij+a α(i)j=2 ( j!) 2n 2 (2s+2t) 2 j 2t 2( (( j )!) j ) (( j 2)!) ) 2( j ) 2( j 2) )) = 2s 2( j 2)! = 2n j j 2 ( j!) j 2( (( j 2)!) ( j 2)! ( j!) j((j 2)!) 2 ( j 2) ( (( j )!) ) t j ) 2. (4.) 5
In the last step we used the equality j = 2s+t. Assume fist that j > 2. Use Lemma 3.3 to deduce that (4.) inceases in t. Hence the maximum value of (4.) is achieved when s = 0 and t = j. Then (4.) is equal to 2n 2 j 2 ( j!) j 2( j ) 2( (( j )!) j ). If j = 2 then, as we explained above, s = 0. Hence (4.) is also equal to the above expession. Hence (6) holds. 7. Tivial. 8. Tivial. Thus This establishes (2.4). (hafna) 2nhafnA 2n ( i!) i= 2 i ) 2nhafnA. Refeences [] N. Alon and J.H. Spence, The Pobabilistic Method, Wiley, New Yok, 992. [2] L.M.
