Weight enumeation of codes fom finite spaces Relinde Juius Octobe 23, 2018 axiv: v1 [math.co] 1 Ap 2011 Abstact We study the genealized and extended weight enumeato of the - ay Simplex code and the -ay fist ode Reed-Mulle code. Fo ou calculations we use that these codes coespond to a pojective system containing all the points in a finite pojective o affine space. As a esult fom the geometic method we use fo the weight enumeation, we also completely detemine the set of suppots of subcodes and wods in an extension code. Keywods: Coding theoy, Weight enumeation, Finite geomety 1 Intoduction The weight enumeato and the set of suppots ae impotant invaiants of a linea code. Besides thei intinsic impotance as mathematical objects, they ae used in the pobability theoy involved with diffeent ways of decoding. In this pape we will detemine the genealized and extended weight enumeato, as well as the set of suppots, of codes with a geometic stuctue. The geometical method fo detemining the genealized weight enumeato is descibed by Tsfasman and Vlǎdut in [14]. Seveal examples ae woked out in the pape. We will apply thei methods to anothe class of codes, namely codes that coespond to a pojective system containing all the points in a finite pojective o affine space. This ae the -ay Simplex code and the -ay fist ode Reed-Mulle code. Afte finding explicit fomulas fo the genealized weight enumeato of these codes, we will apply the coespondence with the extended weight enumeato in [6] to find explicit fomulas fo the extended weigh enumeato of codes coming fom finite pojective and affine spaces. This fomulas wee found befoe by Mphako [10], using the theoy of matoids and geometic lattices. As a esult fom the method used in this pape, we will not only find infomation about the weight distibution of the codes, but also about the geometic stuctue of thei set of suppots. It tuns out that the complements of suppots fom the incidence vectos of points and finite subspaces. This esult could be helpful in studying the dimension of a design (see [12]) o the weight enumeation of the highe ode Reed-Mulle codes (see [2]). 1
2 Codes and weights Moe details about the theoy in this section can be found in Section 5 of [6]. 2.1 Genealized weight enumeato We stat with genealizing the weight distibution in the following way, fist fomulated by Kløve [8, 9] and e-discoveed by Wei [15]. Let C be a linea [n, k] code ove GF(). Instead of looking at wods of C, we conside all the subcodes of C of a cetain dimension. The suppot of a subcode is the union of the suppots of all wods in the subcode. The weight of a subcode is the size of its suppot. It is eual to n minus the numbe of coodinates that ae zeo fo evey wod in the subcode. The smallest weight fo which a subcode of dimension exists, is called the -th genealized Hamming weight of C and denoted by d. Fo each we can define the -th genealized weight distibution of the code, that foms the coefficients of the following polynomial. Definition 1. The genealized weight enumeato is given by whee A () w W () C (X, Y ) = n w=0 = {D C : dim D =, wt(d) = w}. A () w X n w Y w, We can see fom this definition that A (0) 0 = 1 and A () 0 = 0 fo all 0 < k. Futhemoe, evey 1-dimensional subspace of C contains 1 non-zeo codewods, so ( 1)A (1) w is the numbe of wods of weight w fo 0 < w n. 2.2 Extended weight enumeato Let C be a linea [n, k] code ove GF() with geneato matix G. Then we can fom the [n, k] code C GF( m ) ove GF( m ) by taking all GF( m )-linea combinations of the codewods in C. We call this the extension code of C ove GF( m ). By embedding its enties in GF( m ), we find that G is also a geneato matix fo the extension code C GF( m ). This motivates the usage of T as a vaiable fo m in the next definition. Definition 2. The extended weight enumeato is the polynomial W C (X, Y, T ) = n A w (T )X n w Y w w=0 whee the A w (T ) ae integal polynomials in T and A w ( m ) is the numbe of codewods of weight w in C GF( m ). We will omit the poof that the A w (T ) ae indeed polynomials of degee at most k. 2.3 Connections Thee is a connection between the extended and genealized weight enumeato. 2
Theoem 3. Let C be a linea [n, k] code ove GF(). Then the extended weight numeato and the genealized weight enumeatos ae connected via k W C (X, Y, T ) = (T j ) W () (X, Y ). We need the following poposition to pove the case T = m. Poposition 4. Let C be a [n, k] code ove GF(), and let C m be the linea subspace consisting of the m n matices ove GF() whose ows ae in C. Then thee is an isomophism of GF()-vecto spaces between C GF( m ) and C m. Poof. Choose a pimitive m-th oot of unity α GF( m ). Fo a wod in C GF( m ), wite all the coodinates on the basis (1, α, α 2,..., α m 1 ). This gives an m n matix ove GF() whose ows ae wods of C. We will omit the details showing this is an isomophism. Note that this isomophism depends on the choice of a pimitive element α. The use of this isomophism fo the poof of Theoem 3 was suggested in [11] by Simonis. Coollay 5. Let c C GF( m ) and M C m the coesponding m n matix unde a given isomophism. Let D C be the subcode geneated by M. Then supp(c) = supp(d) and hence wt(c) = wt(d). A counting-agument gives the next esult. Poposition 6. Let C be a [n, k] code ove GF(). Then the weight numeato of an extension code and the genealized weight enumeatos ae connected via A w ( m ) = m A () w i=0 C ( m i ). This esult fist appeas in [5, Theoem 3.2]. It gives Theoem 3 by Lagange intepolation. 2.4 A geometic point of view A pojective system P = (P 1,..., P n ) in PG(, ), the pojective space ove GF() of dimension, is an enumeation of points P j in this pojective space, such that not all these points lie in a hypeplane. Let P j be given by be homogeneous coodinates (p 0j : p 1j : : p j ) and let G P be the ( + 1) n matix with (p 0j, p 1j,..., p j ) T as j-th column. Then G P is the geneato matix of a nondegeneate linea code ove GF() of length n and dimension + 1, since not all points lie in a hypeplane. Convesely, let G be a geneato matix of a nondegeneate linea [n, k] code C ove GF(), so G has no zeo columns. Take the columns of G as homogeneous coodinates of points in PG(s 1, ). This gives the pojective system P G ove GF() of G. Fom this two notions it can be shown that thee is a one-to-one coespondence between genealized euivalence classes of linea [n, k] codes, and euivalence 3
classes of pojective systems with n points in PG(k 1, ). See [7, 13]. Remembe we can wite a codewod c C as c = xg, with x GF() k. The i-th coodinate of c is zeo if and only if the standad inne poduct of x and the i-th column of G is zeo. So in tems of pojective systems, P i is in the hypeplane pependicula to x. We can genealize this to subcodes of C. Let Π be a subspace of co-dimension in PG(k 1, ), and let M be an k matix whose nullspace is Π. Then MG is an n matix of full ank whose ows ae a basis of a subcode D C. This gives a one-to-one coespondence between subspaces of codimension of PG(k 1, ) and subcodes of C of dimension. This coespondence is independent of the choice of M, G and the basis of D; see [14] fo details. Theoem 7. Let D C be a subcode of dimension, and Π PG(k 1, ) the coesponding subspace of codimension. Then a coodinate i [n] is in [n] \ supp(d) if and only if the point P i P G is in Π. Poof. The i-th coodinate of D is zeo fo all wods in D if and only if all elements in the basis of D have a zeo in the i-th coodinate. This happens if and only if the i-th column of G is in the nullspace of M, o, euivalently, if the point P i P G is in Π. Coollay 8. Let D C be a subcode of dimension, and Π PG(k 1, ) the coesponding subspace of codimension. Then the weight of D is eual to n minus the numbe of points P i P G that ae in Π. 3 Codes fom a finite pojective space Conside the pojective system P that consists of all the points in PG(s 1, ) without multiplicities. The coesponding code is the Simplex code: Definition 9. The -ay Simplex code S (s) is a linea [( s 1)/( 1), s] code ove GF(). The columns of the geneato matix of the code ae all possible nonzeo vectos in GF() s, up to multiplication by a scala. The coespondence between P and the Simplex code is independent of the choice of a geneato matix. We use this coespondence to detemine the extended weight enumeato of the Simplex code. We do this via the genealized weight enumeatos. Theoem 10. The genealized weight enumeatos of the Simplex code S (s) ae, fo 0 s, given by [ s ] W S(s)(X, Y ) = X (s )/( 1) Y (s s )/( 1). Poof. We use Coollay 8 to detemine the weights of all subcodes of S (s). Fix a dimension. Let D S (s) be some subcode of dimension, that coesponds to the subspace Π PG(s 1, ) of codimension. The weight of D is eual to n minus the numbe of points in P that ae in Π. Because all points of PG(s 1, ) ae in P, the weight is the same fo all D and it is eual to n minus the total numbe of points in Π. This means the weight of D is eual to s 1 1 s 1 = s s 1 1 4
and the theoem follows. Fom the pevious calculation and Theoem 7 the next statement follows. Coollay 11. Let D be some subcode of dimension of the Simplex code S (s). Then the points in P indexed by [n] \ supp(d) ae all the points in the coesponding subspace Π of codimension in PG(s 1, ). We can now wite down the extended weight enumeato of the Simplex code: Theoem 12. The extended weight enumeato of the Simplex code S (s) is eual to W S(s)(X, Y, T ) = (T j ) [ s ] X (s )/( 1) Y (s s )/( 1). Poof. We use the coespondence between the genealized and extended weight enumeato in Theoem 3: W S(s)(X, Y, T ) = (T j ) W S(s)(X, Y ) = (T j ) [ s ] X (s )/( 1) Y (s s )/( 1). In combination with the isomophism of Poposition 4 and Coollay 5, we get the following conseuence. Coollay 13. The points in P indexed by the complement of the suppot of a wod of weight ( s s m )/( 1) in the extension code S (s) GF( m ) ae all the points in a subspace of PG(s 1, ) of codimension m. Example 14. We conside the Simplex code S 2 (3). It is a binay [7, 3] code. Its extended weight enumeato has coefficients A 0 (T ) = 1 A 1 (T ) = 0 A 2 (T ) = 0 A 3 (T ) = 0 A 4 (T ) = 7(T 1) A 5 (T ) = 0 A 6 (T ) = 7(T 1)(T 2) A 7 (T ) = (T 1)(T 2)(T 4). Note that fo any code we have A 0 (T ) = 1 fo the zeo wod, and all othe polynomials ae divisible by (T 1) because ove a field of size 1 we have only the zeo wod. In the binay case T = 2, the polynomials fo A 6 (T ) and A 7 (T ) vanish and the code has only one nonzeo weight. Fo T = 2 2 = 4 still A 7 (T ) vanishes, it is a two-weight code. Fo T = 2 3 and highe extensions we get all the thee possible nonzeo weights. 5
4 Codes fom a finite affine space It might sound a bit stange to talk about the pojective system coming fom an affine space. To solve this, emembe that we can constuct the finite affine space AG(s 1, ) by deleting a hypeplane fom PG(s 1, ). So let the pojective system P consists of all points in PG(s 1, ) minus the points in a hypeplane H of PG(s 1, ). Without loss of geneality, we can choose H to be the hypeplane X 1 = 0. The coesponding code is (euivalent to) the fist ode -ay Reed- Mulle code, and we can define it in the following way: Definition 15. The fist ode -ay Reed-Mulle code RM (1, s 1) is a linea [ s 1, s] code ove GF(). The geneato matix consists of the all-one ow, and the othe positions in the columns of the geneato matix ae all possible vectos in GF() s 1. Note that the linea dependence between the columns of the geneato matix is now eual to the dependence between the coesponding affine points: this popety is vey useful if we want to talk about the matoid associated to the code, see [10]. We will use the pojective system descibed above to detemine the extended weight enumeato of the fist ode Reed-Mulle code. We do this via the genealized weight enumeatos. Theoem 16. The genealized weight enumeatos of the fist ode Reed- Mulle code RM (1, s 1) ae, fo 0 < < s, given by [ ] [ ] W () s 1 s 1 RM (X, Y ) = (1,s 1) Y n + X s 1 Y s 1 s 1. 1 The extemal cases ae, as always, given by W (0) RM (1,s 1) (X, Y ) = Xn, W (s) RM (1,s 1) (X, Y ) = Y n. Poof. We use Coollay 8 to detemine the weights of all subcodes of RM (1, s 1). Fix a dimension, with 0 s. Let D RM (1, s 1) be some subcode of dimension, that coesponds to the subspace Π PG(s 1, ) of codimension. The weight of D is eual to n minus the numbe of points in P that ae in Π. Thee ae two possibilities: Π H; Π H. In the fist case, we cannot have = 0, since then Π is the whole of PG(s 1, ) and this cannot be contained in the hypeplane H. So let > 0. Now non of the points of P ae in Π, since no points of H ae in P. So supp(d) = [n] and wt(d) = n. The numbe of such codes is eual to the numbe of subspaces of codimension 1 in H = P G(s 2, ), this is [ s 1 the following tem fo the genealized weight enumeato: [ ] s 1 Y n. 1 6 ]. So fo 0 < s we get
In the second case, we do not have to conside = s, since then Π is the empty set and this was aleady included in the pevious case. So let < s. Now Π and H intesect in a subspace of codimension in H. The points of P that ae in Π, ae all those points of Π that ae not in Π H. By the constuction of the affine space AG(s 1, ), the points of Π \ (Π H) fom a subspace of AG(s 1, ) of codimension. The numbe of points in such a subspace is s 1, so wt(d) = n s 1 = s 1 s 1. The numbe of such codes is eual to the numbe of subspaces of codimension in AG(s 1, ), this is [ s 1 So this case gives the following tem fo the genealized weight enumeato, fo 0 < s: [ ] s 1 X s 1 Y s 1 s 1. Summing up this two cases leads to the given fomulas. Fom the pevious calculation and Theoem 7 the next statement follows. Coollay 17. Let D be some subcode of dimension of the fist ode Reed- Mulle code RM (1, s 1). Then eithe supp(d) = [n], o the points in P indexed by [n] \ supp(d) ae all the points in the coesponding subspace Π of codimension in PG(s 1, ). We can now wite down the extended weight enumeato of the fist ode Reed- Mulle code: Theoem 18. The extended weight enumeato of the fist ode Reed-Mulle code RM (1, s 1) is eual to [ ] W RM(1,s 1)(X, Y, T ) = (T j ) s 1 Y n 1 =1 s 1 [ ] + (T j ) s 1 X s 1 Y s 1 s 1. Poof. We use the coespondence between the genealized and extended weight ]. 7
enumeato in Theoem 3: W RM(1,s 1)(X, Y, T ) = (T j ) W S(s)(X, Y ) s 1 = X n + (T j ) =1 =1 ( [s ] 1 Y n 1 [ ] ) s 1 + X s 1 Y s 1 s 1 + Y n s 1 [ ] = (T j ) s 1 [ ] + (T j ) s 1 Y n. 1 X s 1 Y s 1 s 1 In combination with the isomophism of Poposition 4 and Coollay 5, we get the following conseuence. Coollay 19. The points in P indexed by the complement of the suppot of a wod of weight s 1 s 1 m in the extension code RM (1, s 1) GF( m ) ae all the points in a subspace of AG(s 1, ) of codimension m. Example 20. We conside the Reed-Mulle code RM 2 (1, 3). It is a binay [8, 4] code. Its extended weight enumeato has coefficients A 0 (T ) = 1 A 1 (T ) = 0 A 2 (T ) = 0 A 3 (T ) = 0 A 4 (T ) = 14(T 1) A 5 (T ) = 0 A 6 (T ) = 28(T 1)(T 2) A 7 (T ) = 8(T 1)(T 2)(T 4) A 8 (T ) = (T 1)(T 3 7T T 21). As noted in Example 14, fo any code we have A 0 (T ) = 1 fo the zeo wod, and all othe polynomials ae divisible by (T 1) because ove a field of size 1 we have only the zeo wod. In the binay case T = 2, the polynomials fo A 6 (T ) and A 7 (T ) vanish and we get a two-weight code. Fo T = 2 2 = 4 still A 7 (T ) vanishes. Fo T = 2 3 and highe extensions we get all the fou possible nonzeo weights. This example and the pevious Example 14 also illustate that the binay Simplex code S 2 (s) is euivalent to the binay Reed-Mulle code RM 2 (1, s) shotened at the fist coodinate. 8
5 Links to othe poblems We found diect fomulas fo the extended weight enumeato of the -ay Simplex code and the -ay fist ode Reed-Mulle code. Following fom this calculations, we found the geometical stuctue of the suppots of the subcodes and of wods in extension codes. This tigges a lot of links with othe poblems in discete mathematics and coding theoy. The following list is by no means exhaustive, but it hopefully seves as encouagement and inspiation fo futhe eseach. Mphako [10] calculated the Tutte polynomial of the matoids coming fom finite pojective and affine spaces. He does this by using the euivalence between the Tutte polynomial and the cobounday polynomial. The cobounday polynomial of a matoid is also the ecipocal polynomial of the extended weight enumeato of the code associated to a matoid, see [6] fo details. The fomulas found by Mphako indeed coincide with the extended weight enumeatos in this pape. We calculated the extended weight enumeato fo the fist ode (genealized) Reed-Mulle code. The weight enumeation of highe ode Reed-Mulle codes is an open poblem. The genealized Hamming weights of -ay Reed-Mulle codes wee found by Heijnen and Pellikaan [4]. It is known that the -th ode Reed-Mulle codes RM(, m) aise fom the design of points and subspaces of codimension in the affine space AG(m, 2), see [1]. The -ay analogue of this statement is teated in [2]. In Coollay 19 we saw that the suppots of the wods in the extension code RM (1, s 1) GF( ) contain the design of points and subspaces of codimension in AG(s 1, ). This suggests some kind of link between extension codes of the fist ode Reed- Mulle code and the highe ode Reed-Mulle codes. If we can make this link explicit, it might lead to moe insights to the weight enumeation of highe ode Reed-Mulle codes. We encounteed two types of two-weight codes in this pape: the fist ode Reed-Mulle code, and the extension of the Simplex code S (s) GF( 2 ). How do these codes fit into the classification of two-weight codes fom Caldebank and Kanto [3]? Fo evey design, one can talk about its p-ank. Tonchev [12] genealized this concept to the dimension of a design, and fomulated an analogue of the Hamada conjectue. Knowing the extended weight enumeato of the Simplex code could be of help in poving this conjectue fo geometic designs. Acknowledgment The autho would like to thank Vladimi Tonchev fo coming up with the uestion about the weight enumeato of the extension codes of the Simplex code, and fo his encouaging convesations on the subject. 9
