1 Hydrogen Energy for sustainable development Date 16/07/2014 Dr. A.C. Gangal Designation HOD Energy is an essential input for every activity. Fast depletion of the available resources is posing threat to the sustainable development and therefore it s a need of the day to take corrective measures for the betterment of the future generations. While there is a serious power crisis we are facing today there is also a ray of hope in the form of energy management and the renewable energy technologies. There exists no single prescription for this energy crisis and thus it is needed to employ all the possible remedies for sustainability but particularly hydrogen energy is the most promising solutions of all in my opinion. The four columns on which the structure of hydrogen based energy economy is supposed to stand are hydrogen production, hydrogen transport, storage and utilization and these four columns need a great deal of reinforcement by means of extensive research in these fields the talk will be focused at these aspects of hydrogen energy.
2 Performance Indices of India in Global Scenario Date 23/07/2014 Prof. B.A. Danawade Designation Associate Professor India has played an important role in global economy post globalization and liberalization efforts and continues to play a more responsible role in decades to come. In last twenty years India has impressively performed on all the fronts. This is gauged in this presentation by considering few select key performance indicators. It is observed that the efforts to improve the economy have also impacted the research and research publication by India. India has improved its ranking on world map. This presentation takes review of the rank of the India by considering documents published. The main focus was on contribution on Engineering and Mechanical Engineering documents published and the rank of India in the said area. To relate this growth few important key indicators of India have been considered to study the correlation. The impact of these parameters has been discussed. It is observed that employment to population ratio and global competitiveness rank has gone down and are likely to spoil the good story of India. It was also observed that the parameter on spending on R&D and Human Development Index has not significantly improved. The unsuitability to employment of engineers produced in India is very high and this will blur the future of India in the research, development, and publications. To convert the ongoing story of India to a sustainable long term story we need to change the development models which are in practice today in the area of technical education in particular and education as a whole. 3 Superconductors Date 30/07/2014 Prof. M. N. Lahane Designation Assistant Professor & HOD (ASH) Superconductivity is a fascinating and challenging field of physics. Scientists and engineers throughout the world have been striving to develop an understanding of this remarkable phenomenon for many years. For nearly 75 years superconductivity has been a relatively difficult to understand subject. Today however, superconductivity is being applied to many diverse areas such as: medicine, theoretical and experimental science, the military, transportation, power production, electronics, as well as many other areas. With the discovery of high-temperature superconductors, which can operate at liquid nitrogen temperatures (77 K), superconductivity is now well within the reach of students. Unique and exciting opportunities exist today for our students to explore and experiment with this new and important technological field of physics. In 1911, Kamerlingh Onnes recognized the importance of his discovery of superconductor to the scientific community as well as its commercial potential. An electrical conductor with no resistance could carry current any distance with no losses. In one of Onnes experiments he started a current flowing through a loop of lead wire cooled to 4 K. A year later the current was still flowing without significant current loss. Onnes found that the superconductor exhibited what he called persistent currents, electric currents that continued to flow without an electric potential driving them. Onnes had discovered superconductivity, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in In 1957 scientists began to unlock the mysteries of superconductors. Three American physicists at the University of Illinois, John Bardeen, Leon Cooper, and Robert Schrieffer, developed a model that has since stood as a good mental picture of why superconductors behave as they do. The model is expressed in terms of advanced ideas of the science of Quantum Mechanics, but the main idea of the model suggests that electrons in a superconductor condense into a quantum ground state and travel together collectively and coherently. In 1972, Bardeen, Cooper, and Schrieffer received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their theory of superconductivity, which is now known as the BCS theory, after the initials of their last names. In this session we not only will discuss the mysteries of superconductors but also will share some of the attention-grabbing, enthralling and challenging applications of superconductors.

Patnaik Designation Professor Since publications secure credit for people in academia and in research organizations, there is a temptation to resort to unscrupulous methods to increase one s publications and their citations. One common method is to cite one s own prior work in her/his publication. Another method is to submit many manuscripts that use the same data and differ only marginally in their analyses. Yet a third method is for a group of authors to cooperate and cite one another s publications repeatedly so that the citation counts of all get inflated. This talk will discuss some of these unethical practices with real examples.

In addition to traditional course materials such as videos, readings, and problem sets, MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build a community for students, professors, and teaching assistants (TAs). MOOCs are a recent development in distance education which began to emerge in Although early MOOCs often emphasized open access features, such as connectivism and open licensing of content, structure and learning goals, to promote the reuse and remixing of resources, some notable newer MOOCs use closed licenses for their course materials while maintaining free access for students.

Conventional methods of monitoring and diagnosing the diseases rely on detecting the presence of particular features by a human observer. Due to large number of patients in intensive care units and the need for continuous observation of such conditions, several techniques for automated diagnostic systems have been developed in recent years to attempt to solve this problem. Such techniques work by transforming the mostly qualitative diagnostic criteria into a more objective quantitative feature classification problem. Probabilistic Neural Network with image and data processing techniques will be employed to implement an automated brain tumor classification.
