Comparison between Parametrized homology via zigzag persistence and Refined homology in the presence of a real-valued continuous function arxiv: v1 [math.at] 4 Apr 2019 Dan Burghelea Abstract In this note one shows that the four persistence diagramsdgm (HX) and the measuresµ HX defined in [5] are particular cases of the maps δ f, γ f and the measures dimf( ) and dimt( ) defined in [3] and [1]. Contents 1 Introduction 1 2 Definitions 2 3 Equalities 5 1 Introduction In a recent paper [5] which has appeared in Journal of Algebraic and Geometric topology , Carson, de- Silva, Kalishnik and Morozov (CSKM) have proposed for anr space X (= f : X R) under reasonable topological hypotheses four persistence diagrams Dgm (HX),Dgm (HX),Dgm \\ ( X),Dgm // (HX). They are maps with discrete support from R 2 + = a < b + } to Z 0, which the authors regard as the relevant invariants for parametrized homology ofx. The above authors derive these maps as densities dµ of four integer valued measures µ = µ H, r(x) µ (X),µ\\ (X),µ// (X) for squares R provided by four values a,b,c,d, a < b < c,d 1. In cite [3] sections 6 and 7 (cf. also [4]) and in more details in the book [1] sections 5 and 6, under essentially the same hypotheses, two maps with discrete support, ρ f r : R 2 Z 0,γr f : R 2 \ Z 0 with = (x,x) R 2 }, have been defined and studied. The discussion is done for X compact but it remains the same without need of additional comments for X locally compact and f : X R a proper map. In case X is compact the support of the maps δr f and γr f is finite hence they are configurations of points with multiplicity as they are called in [3], [1] and [4]. They actually come from vector spaces-valued maps ˆρ f r and ˆγ r f with ρ f = dimˆγ r f and γr f = dimˆγ r f and are viewed as the relevant topological invariants Department of Mathematics, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH 43210,USA. burghele@math.ohio-state.edu 1 although there is no density of measure concept used in the paper [5] 1
for a real-valued mapf. They are derived as densities of mesures from the measures dimf r and dimt r defined on the sigma algebras associated to the same type of squares 2 ). A measure theoretic formulation of bothδr,γ f r,and f even more general of ˆδ r f and ˆγ r,can f be explicitly found in [1] subsection 9.2 and is implicit in [3] and in [1] subsections 5.1 and 6.1. Papers [3] and [4], are among the cited references of [5] but not for the relevant reasons. The authors of [5] fail to observe that their persistence diagrams and measures are not different from the ones considered in [3] and [1]. The purpose of this note is to make explicit the equalities of the persistence diagrams Dmg and of the measures µ with the maps ρ f and the meausres dimf,dimt, equalities which might pass unnoticed in view of notational differences. Precisely, one has: (a): Dmg ( (X)) equals ρ f r restricted to R 2 +, (b): Dmg ( (X)) equals ρ f r 1 T restricted tor2 +, (c): Dmg \\ ( (X)) equals ρ f r restricted tor 2 +, (d): Dmg // ( (X)) equals ρ f r 1 T restricted to R2 +. for T(x,y) = (y,x), and (A): µ ([a,b] [c,d)) = dimf r ((a,b] [c,d)) (B): µ \\ ([a,b] [c,d]) = dimt r ((a,b] (c,d]) (C): µ // 1 ([a,b] [c,d]) = dimf r ((c,d] [a,b)) (D): µ ([a,b] [c,d]) = dimf r ((c,d] [a,b)) The stability results as stated in [5] are implicit in the stability results of [3] or [1] and the Alexander duality in [5] can be derived without effort from the Poincaré-duality in [3] or [1] in the same way the Alexander duality can be derived from the Poincaré duality. 2 Definitions 2.1 CSKM-definitions For simplicity in writing one shortens the notations in [5] by replacing the notation : byc, byo, \\ by co, // byoc and µ H byµ rx r. Consider Br c = the multi-set of closed r bar codes, Br o = the multi-set of open r bar codes, Br c,o = the multi-set of closed-open r bar codes, Br o,c = the multi-set of open-closed r bar codes. The definitions of barcodes B r in [5] (called in [5] intervals and / or decorated pairs ) are based on the initial presentation of zigzag persistence introduced by Carlsson, de-silva, Morozov in A reformulation of these definitions in terms of death and of observability is provided in [1] subsection They become four when one treats separately the above diagonal squares and below diagonal squares 2
A careful reading of the definitions in [5] shows that for a box R = [a,b] [c,d] with a < b < c < d one has µ c (R) = I Br c [b,c] I (a,d)}, µ co (R) = I Br co [b,c) I [a,d}, µ oc (R) = I Br oc (b,c] I (a,d]}, µ o (R) = I Br o (b,c) I (a,d)}. and if for a barcode I one denotes by l(i) resp. r(i) the left end resp. the right end then the above descriptions become µ c (R) = I Br c a < l(i) b, c r(i) < d} µ c,o (R) = I Br c,o a < l(i) b, c r(i) < d} µ o (R) = I Br o a < l(i) < b, c < r(i) < d} (1) µ o,c (R) = I Br o,c a < l(i) b, c r(i) < d} Dmgr c (a,b) = I Bc r a = l(i) r(i) = b} Dmgr c,o (a,b) = I Br c,o a = l(i) r(i) = b} Dmgr(a,b) o = I Br o a = l(i) r(i) = b} Dmgr o,c (a,b) = I Bo,c r a = l(i) r(i) = b} (2) 2.2 BH-definitions Denote by : I a (r) = img( (f 1 ((,a])) (X)), I a (r) = img( (f 1 ([a, ))) (X)), F r (a,b) = I a (r) I b (r), F r (a,b) := dimf r (a,b), T r (a,b) := ker( (f 1 ((,a]) (f 1 ((,b])) when a < b, T r (a,b) := ker( (f 1 ([a, )) f 1 ([b, )) whena > b, T r (a,b) = dimt r (a,b). Define: - for a box B = (a,b] [c,d), a < b,c < d F r (B) := F r (b,c)/(f r (a,c)+f r (b,d)); then one has dimf r (B) = F r (b,c)+f r (a,d) F r (a,c) F r (b,d), (3) - for a box (above diagonal) B = (a,b] (c,d],a < b c < d T r (B ) := T r (b,d)/j T r (a,d)+t r (b,c) withj : T r (a,d) T r (b,d) the obviously induced linear map; then one has dimt r (B ) = T r (b,d)+t r (a,c) T r (a,d) T r (b,c), (4) 3
- for a box (box below diagonal) B = [c,d) [a,b),a < b c < d T r (B ) := T c,a (r)/j T d,a (r)+t c,b (r) withj : T d,a (r) T c,a (r) the obviously induced linear map; then one has dimt r (B ) = T r (c,a)+t r (d,b) T r (c,b) T r (d,a). (5) Recall from [2] Theorem 3.2 and Proposition 5.3 or from [3] Proposition or from [1] Proposition 4.3 that we have the following equalities: I Br c l(i) a} dim (f 1 (,a]) = I Br 1 o I (,a)} I Br co l(i) a < r(i)} As a consequence 1. for a > b I Br c l(i) a} dimi a (r) = I Br 1 o I (,a)}, I Br c r(i) a} dim (f 1 ([a, )) = I Br 1 o I (a, )} I Br oc l(i) < a r(i)} dimi a (r) = dimf r (a,b) = I B c r r(i) a} I B o r 1 I (a, )}. I Br c l(i) a,r(i) b} I Br 1 o b < l(i) < r(i) < a} (6) δr f (a,b) = I = [a,b] Bo r 1 l(i) = b,r(i) = a} (7) 2. for a b 3. for a < b dimf r (a,b) = I Br c l(i) a b r(i)} (8) δr f (a,b) = I = [a,b] Bc r l(i) = a,r(i) = b} (9) dimt a,b (r) = I B co r l(i) a < r(i) b} (10) γr f (a,b) = I = [a,b) Bo r 1 l(i) = a,r(i) = b} (11) 4. for a > b 3 a real valued map can be regarded as an angle valued map dimt a,b (r) = I B oc r b l(i) < a r(i)} (12) γr f (a,b) = I = [a,b] Bo r 1 l(i) = b,r(i) = a} (13) 4
3 Equalities For R = [a,b] [c,d) witha < b < c < d (1)+ (8) +(3) imply (A) and (2)+ (9) imply (a), (1)+ (6) +(3) imply (B) and (2)+ (7) imply (b), (1)+ (10) +(4) imply (C) and (2)+ (11) imply (c), (1)+ (12) +(4) imply (D) and (2)+ (13) imply (d).
