The numerical method i a Lie Trotter plitting in time that i combined with a Fourier collocation in pace to a fully dicrete method. Firt-order convergence in time and high-order convergence in pace depending on the regularity of the exact olution are hown for thi method. The main challenge in the analyi i to exclude a lo of patial regularity in the numerical olution. Thi i done by tranforming the numerical method to new variable and by impoing a natural CFL-type retriction on the dicretization parameter. Mathematic Subject Claification 21: 65M15, 65P1, 65M2. eyword: Zakharov ytem, plitting method, Lie Trotter plitting, Fourier collocation, error bound, lo of derivative. 1 Introduction We conider the Zakharov ytem i t ψ = ψ + uψ, tt u = u + ψ introduced by Zakharov [21], which decribe the propagation of Langmuir wave in a plama. It i a Schrödinger equation for the complex-valued function ψ = ψx, t that i nonlinearly coupled to a wave equation for the real-valued function u = ux, t. Thi ytem i often conidered on the full pace R d, but for a ubequent numerical dicretization it i uually truncated to a finite box. We therefore conider thi ytem with periodic boundary condition in d-dimenional pace, with period normalized to 2π, i.e., x T d = R d /2πZ d. A a numerical method for the Zakharov ytem 1.1, we tudy the method of Jin, Markowich & Zheng [14], which i a Lie Trotter plitting in time combined with a Fourier collocation in pace. Thi method ha proven to work well in extenive numerical tet, ee [14]. In the preent paper, we give a rigorou error analyi of thi method, howing firt-order convergence in time and high-order convergence in pace depending on the regularity of the exact olution. The error bound hold under a CFL-type tep-ize retriction on the dicretization parameter. In view of the proven temporal and patial error bound, thi CFL condition i a natural retriction 1 Intitut für Mathematik, Freie Univerität Berlin, Arnimallee 9, D Berlin, Germany gauckler@math.fu-berlin.de. 1
on the dicretization parameter. A will be illutrated by numerical experiment, thi condition i not only ufficient but alo neceary for convergence. At firt glance, an error analyi of plitting method applied to 1.1 might eem an eay exercie in view of the available error analyi for plitting method applied to emilinear Schrödinger equation [17, 2] and emilinear wave equation [5]. Thi, however, i not the cae, eentially becaue there i a formal lo of patial regularity lo of patial derivative in the Zakharov ytem that a numerical method and it analyi have to handle. In fact, an inpection of the wave equation in 1.1 ugget that u, t, t u, t i in the Sobolev pace H +1 T d H T d for ome > d 2 only if ψ, t i in the Sobolev pace H T d of higher order. An inpection of the Schrödinger equation in 1.1 ugget, however, that ψ, t ha no higher regularity than u, t, which i H +1 T d. See alo the introduction of [1]. We emphaize that thi lo of patial regularity i formal in the ene that it only appear in a naive and formal analyi, while it can be hown, with more ophiticated argument, to not affect the actual exact olution. The formal lo of patial regularity i a major difficulty in the numerical analyi of the Zakharov ytem. The problem i that a lo of regularity might be alo preent in a numerical method, or at leat in it naive analyi. Typically, implicit or emiimplicit method can be deigned to avoid thi potential lo of regularity, and indeed they have been introduced and analyzed for the Zakharov ytem in [3, 4, 7, 8]. More recently, however, everal explicit plitting method have been introduced [1, 2, 14, 15], among them the method of Jin, Markowich & Zheng [14] that we conider here. Thee explicit method performed well in numerou numerical tet, but rigorou error bound for them eem to be miing o far. In fact, direct etimate for uch method, a ued in the mentioned paper on Schrödinger and wave equation, cannot exclude a lo of patial regularity of the numerical olution in each time tep, ee Section 6. Moreover, a lo of patial regularity actually occur when the mentioned CFL condition i violated, ee alo Section 6. In the preent paper, we give an error analyi for uch an explicit method. The main tool i a tranformation of the numerical olution to new variable. In thee new variable, a lo of patial regularity can be excluded and an error analyi i in fact poible, leading finally to error bound in the original variable. The tranformation that we ue i a dicrete analogon of a tranformation introduced by Ozawa & Tutumi in [18] for the analyi of the Zakharov ytem itelf. We mention that thi latter tranformation ha been put to numerical ue by Herr & Schratz in [1] in a conceptually different way than here. They tart from the Zakharov ytem in the new variable of [18] and deign and analyze a new numerical method for the ytem in thee new variable. In contrat, we tranlate here the tranformation of [18] to a dicrete level and how how thi help to analyze an exiting and well-etablihed numerical method. The technique developed in the preent paper can alo be ued to analyze the extenion of the conidered Lie Trotter plitting to a formally econd-order Strang plitting for the Zakharov ytem, a conidered alo in [14]. We expect that the technique can in addition be ued to prove error bound for the plitting integrator of Bao, Sun & Wei [1, 2] for the Zakharov ytem. Moreover, we expect them to be ueful to analyze numerical method for other equation with a formal lo of patial derivative, for which a tranformation to new variable without lo of derivative i available for the exact olution, for example for derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation [9]. From a technical point of view, the preent paper provide a new technique to analyze explicit numerical method for hyperbolic equation, where a 2
formal lo of patial regularity i problematic. Previou technique for that purpoe include energy etimate ued for quailinear wave equation [6, 11] and pecial regularity reult for the invicid Burger equation ued for the dv equation [12] and for partial differential equation with Burger nonlinearity [13]. The paper i organized a follow. In Section 2, the conidered numerical method i introduced and the error bound are tated. In Section 3, a dicrete verion of the tranformation of [18] i decribed for the Lie Trotter plitting, which i then ued to prove the correponding error bound for the patial emi-dicretization in Section 4 and for the fully dicrete method in Section 5. In the final Section 6, numerical experiment are preented that illutrate amongt other the lo of patial regularity when the CFL condition i not met. Notation. For, we let H = H T d denote the tandard Sobolev pace equipped with the norm 1/2 2 vj v = max j, 1 2 j Z d for vx = v j e ij x, j Z d where j x = j 1 x j d x d and j 2 = j j = j jd 2. We will make frequent ue of the fact that thi pace form, for > d 2, a normed algebra: vw C v w 1.2 with C depending only on d and. On the product H +1 H we ue the norm v, v = v v 2 1/2, v, v H +1 H. We further denote by Ω the operator on function that multiplie the jth Fourier coefficient of it argument by j = j j2 d : Ωvx = j v j e ij x for vx = v j e ij x. 1.3 j Z d j Z d In other word, we have Ω 2 =, and we will often favour the notation Ω 2 over ince the numerical method eventually involve function of Ω. For function depending on pace x and time t, we write ut = u, t in the following. In addition, we ue the function φξ = eξ 1, 1.4 ξ which i familiar from exponential integrator. We will often ue that e ξ e η = ξ ηφξ ηe η. 2 Numerical method and error bound Throughout the paper, we conider the Zakharov ytem 1.1 in firt-order form i t ψ = ψ + uψ, t u = u, t u = u + ψ For the numerical dicretization of thi ytem, we conider a numerical method introduced in [14], which combine a plitting integrator in time with a Fourier collocation in pace. 3
2.1 Fourier collocation in pace We firt dicretize 2.1 in pace by Fourier collocation. Thi method i baed on the anatz pace { } v j e ij x : v j C, = {,..., 1 } d, j of trigonometric polynomial of degree. We replace ψt, ut and ut in 2.1 by trigonometric polynomial ψ t, u t and u t from thi anatz pace. A uch trigonometric polynomial are uniquely determined by their value in the dicrete point x k = kπ/, k, we require that thee anatz function atify the Zakharov ytem 2.1 in thee dicrete point. Letting I denote the trigonometric interpolation of degree, i.e., the operator that aign to a function the unique trigonometric polynomial of degree that take the ame value in the dicrete point x k, k, the ytem of equation for ψ t, u t and u t then read with initial value i t ψ = ψ + I u ψ, t u = u, t u = u + I 2.2 ψ 2 ψ t = I ψt, u t = I ut, u t = I ut. In thi ytem, u and u are not necearily real-valued, but they take real value in the dicrete point x k, k. We recall here the following well-known and fundamental lemma on the trigonometric interpolation I. Lemma 2.1. Let > d 2 and σ. Then we have and Iv C v, v H, v Iv C σ v +σ, v H +σ. The contant C depend only on d and and σ. 2.2 Lie Trotter plitting in time The dicretization in time of the emi-dicretization in pace 2.2 i baed on the plitting of 2.2 into i t ψ = ψ, i t ψ = I u ψ, t u =, and t u = u, t u = t u = u + I ψ 2. A noted in [14], both of thee plitted ytem can be olved exactly: The olution of the firt ytem i ψ t = e it t ψ t = e it tω2 ψ t, u t = u t and u t = u t. 4
For the econd ytem, we firt note the olution of it firt equation i given by ψ t = I e it tv t t ψ t with v t = 1 t t+t t u t dt. 2.3 Uing that the value u x k, t, k, in the wave equation are real, thi how in particular that the abolute value ψ x k, t, k, are contant in time. Hence, I ψ 2 i contant in time, and the wave equation in the econd ytem can be reformulated a tt u + I ψ 2 = u + I ψ 2. With the matrix cotω t inctω Rt =, 2.4 Ω intω cotω where Ω i the operator 1.3, the olution to the wave equation in the econd ytem i thu given by u t + I ψ t 2 u u = Rt t t t + I ψ t 2 u. t The Lie Trotter plitting applied to 2.2 ue a compoition of the decribed flow of the two plitted equation to compute approximation to 2.2. Denoting the time tep-ize τ, the method compute trigonometric polynomial ψ n+1, u n+1 and u n+1 of degree that are uppoed to approximate the olution ψ t n+1, u t n+1 and u t n+1 of 2.2 at dicrete time t n+1 = t + n + 1τ: ψn+1 = e iτω2 I e iτv n+1 ψ n, u n+1 u = Rτ n u + Rτ 1 I ψn 2, n u n+1 2.5a where by computing the integral in 2.3 v n+1 = incτωu n τ inc 1 2 τω 2 u n + incτω 1 I ψ n b Initial value are computed by trigonometric interpolation, ψ = ψ t = I ψt, u = u t = I ut, u = u t = I ut. 2.5c We note that v n+1 = incτωu n τ inc 1 2 τω 2 u n+1 + incτω 1 I ψ n 2, 2.6 which can be verified by inerting 2.5a into 2.6 and uing a lot of trigonometric identitie. 2.3 Statement of error bound We tate our error bound for the patial emi-dicretization 2.2 by Fourier collocation and for the full dicretization 2.5 by Lie Trotter plitting. For thee global error bound on finite time interval, we aume regularity of the exact olution to the Zakharov ytem 2.1: ψt +σ + ut, ut +σ M for t t T 2.7 5
for ome > d 2 and σ >. Thi regularity aumption can be expected to hold locally in time by the well-poedne theory of the Zakharov ytem 2.1 on the toru, ee [16] and reference therein. For the patial emi-dicretization 2.2, we then have the following error bound, whoe proof i given in Section 3 and 4 below. Theorem 2.2. Let > d 2 and σ >, and aume that the exact olution to 2.1 atifie 2.7 with thee and σ and with M 1 and T >. Then, the error of the Fourier collocation 2.2 with patial dicretization parameter i bounded by ψt ψ t + ut, ut u t, u t C σ for t t T. The contant C and depend only on, σ, M and T of 2.7 and on the dimenion d. Our main reult i the following global error bound for the Lie Trotter plitting 2.5. It proof i given in Section 3 and 5 below. The reult hold under the CFL-type tep-ize retriction dτ 2 c < 2π 2.8 on the time tep-ize τ, the patial dicretization parameter and the dimenion d. Theorem 2.3. Let > d 2 and σ 2, and aume that the exact olution to 2.1 atifie 2.7 with thee and σ and with M 1 and T >. Then, the global error of the Lie Trotter plitting 2.5 with time tep-ize τ τ and patial dicretization parameter that atify the CFL-type tep-ize retriction 2.8 i bounded by ψtn ψn + ut n, ut n u n, u n C τ + σ for t n t = nτ T. The contant C, and τ depend on, σ, M and T of 2.7, on the dimenion d and on c of 2.8. In view of the error bound of Theorem 2.3, it i natural to chooe τ = O σ = O 2. The CFL condition 2.8 of Theorem 2.3 i thu not evere but natural. 3 New variable for the numerical method In thi ection, we preent the tranformation from [18] of the Zakharov ytem 2.1 to new variable, in which a lo of patial derivative can be excluded. We then how, how the emi-dicretization in pace 2.2 and the fully dicrete plitting method 2.5 can be tranformed in a imilar way to new variable. A it turn out, a lo of patial derivative can be excluded in thee new variable a well. The error bound of Theorem 2.2 and 2.3 are therefore proven in Section 4 and 5 below in thee new variable. 3.1 Tranformation of the exact olution We decribe the tranformation of the Zakharov ytem 2.1 introduced in [18]. It i baed on the new variable ϕ = t ψ, 3.1 for which we get the equation i t ϕ = ϕ + uϕ + uψ
The original variable ψ can be recovered from ϕ in two equivalent way. On the one hand, we have t ψt = ψt + ϕt dt. 3.3 t On the other hand, we get the Poion equation ψ = iϕ uψ from the differential equation for ψ in 2.1, which yield ψ = iϕ + ψ uψ, 3.4 where ψ on the right-hand ide can be computed from 3.3. For ψ computed from the integral 3.3, we write ψ I in the following, and for ψ computed from the Poion equation 3.4 with ψ I on the right-hand ide, we write ψ P. We end up with the ytem where the notation i t ϕ = ϕ + uϕ + uψ I, t u = u, t u = u + ψ P 2, t ψ I t = ψt + ϕt dt, t ψ P = iϕ + ψi uψ I 3.5a 3.5b are ued. In the new variable, we ee that we gain two patial derivative of ψ = ψ P in comparion to ϕ = t ψ a needed in the wave equation of 1.1, ee the dicuion in the introduction. For later ue, we note that, under the regularity aumption 2.7 of Theorem 2.2, we have for the new variable ϕ = t ψ = i ψ iuψ the bound by the algebra property 1.2. ϕt +σ CM Tranformation of the emi-dicretization in pace It i traightforward to extend the decribed tranformation of [18] to the emi-dicretization in pace 2.2. With the new variable we get the ytem where the notation ϕ = t ψ 3.7 i t ϕ = ϕ + I u ϕ + u ψ I t u = u, t u = u + I ψ P 2, t ψi t = ψ t + ϕ t dt, t ψ P = I iϕ + ψ I u ψ I are ued. Note that ψ I = ψ P = ψ. The initial value for thi ytem are ϕ t = I ϕt, u t = I ut, u t = I ut., 3.8a 3.8b 7
3.3 Tranformation of the full dicretization In thi ection, we perform the tranformation of [18] on a fully dicrete level for the numerical method 2.5. Thi how how the Lie Trotter plitting 2.5 can be interpreted a a dicretization of the Zakharov ytem in the new variable 3.5. The dicrete new variable that we introduce i ϕ n+1 = ψ n+1 ψ n τ, n =, 1, 2,.... Thi i a time-dicrete verion of 3.1 and 3.7. For thi new variable, we get from 2.5a the recurion ϕ n+1 = e iτω2 I e iτv e iτv n ϕ n ie iτω 2 n+1 e iτv n I ψn, iτ which i a dicrete analogon of 3.2. Writing wn = vn+1 vn /τ, we get ϕ n+1 = e iτω2 I e iτv n ϕ n iτwn φ iτ 2 wn ψ n with the function φ of 1.4. We note that wn = inc 1 2 τω 2 u n + incτω 1 I Re ψn + ψn 1ϕ n by 2.5b and 2.6. The original variable ψ can be recovered from the new variable ϕ in two equivalent way. On the one hand, we have in analogy to 3.3 ψn = ψn 1 + τϕ n = = ψ + τ ϕ ϕ n. On the other hand, uing ψn 1 = Ie iτv n e iτω 2 ψn in τϕ n = ψn ψn 1, we get e iτω e 2 1 ψn = iϕ iτv n 1 n I e iτω2 ψn. iτ iτ Under the CFL condition 2.8, the matrix e iτω2 1 i invertible. Thi yield a dicrete analogon of 3.4: ψn = Ω 2 φ iτω I iϕ n + ψn vn φ iτvn e iτω 2 ψn with φ from 1.4. We end up with for n 1 ϕ n+1 = e iτω2 I e iτv n ϕ n iτwn φ iτ 2 wn ψ I,n, u n+1 u = Rτ n u + Rτ 1 I ψp,n 2, n u n+1 3.9a where the notation vn = incτωu n 1 2 τ inc 1 2 τω 2 u n + incτω 1 I ψi,n 1 2, wn = inc 1 2 τω 2 u n + incτω 1 I Re ψi,n + ψi,n 1ϕ 3.9b n 8
and ψi,n = ψ + τ ϕ ϕ n, ψp,n = Ω 2 φ iτω I iϕ n + ψi,n vn φ iτvn 3.9c e iτω 2 ψi,n are ued. Note again that ψ I,n = ψ P,n = ψ n. The tarting value for thi two-term recurion are u = I ut, u = I ut, ψ P, = ψ = I ψt, ϕ 1 = ψ 1 ψ τ with ψ 1 = e iτω2 I e iτv 1 ψ. 3.9d The formula for the numerical method in the new variable are much longer than in the original variable and certainly not uited for an implementation of the method. Neverthele, they are very ueful for the analyi: it turn out that they allow u to gain two patial derivative for the numerical olution ψn = ψp,n in comparion to ϕ n thank to the factor Ω 2 φ iτω Thi property i crucial for our analyi. It i proven in the following lemma under the CFL condition 2.8. Under thi CFL condition, the operator Ω 2 = act only on trigonometric polynomial of fixed degree and i thu bounded. Lemma 3.1. Let and aume that the CFL condition 2.8 hold. We then have, for trigonometric polynomial vx = j v j e ij x of degree, Ω 2 φ iτω v C v, Ω v Ω 2 φ iτω v Cτ v. Proof. a We prove the firt etimate. The jth Fourier coefficient of the function whoe norm ha to be etimated i given by For the expreion in the denominator, we note that iτ e iτ j iτ v j, j. 3.1 e iτ j iτ = 2 in 1 2 τ j i inτ j 2 + τ. Uing inξ 2 π ξ for ξ 1 2π, we thu have for thi denominator e iτ j iτ inτ j 2 + τ 2 π τ max j, 1 2, τ j 2 1 2π. 3.11a Uing in 1 2 ξ ξ in 1 2 c/c and in 1 2 ξ minin 1 2 c, in 1 4 π for 1 2 π ξ c with c < 2π from the CFL condition 2.8, we get e iτ j iτ 2 in 1 2 τ j 2 2 2, Cτ max j, π τ j 2 c 3.11b with C depending on c < 2π. Uing the etimate 3.11 for the denominator in 3.1, we ee that the abolute value of the above jth Fourier coefficient 3.1 i bounded by C max j, 1 2 v j, if the CFL condition 2.8 hold. Thi yield the firt etimate of the lemma. b For the econd etimate of the lemma, we proceed imilarly a in a. The jth Fourier coefficient of the function whoe norm ha to be etimated i now given by e iτ j 2 1 iτ j 2 j 2 + 1e iτ j iτ v j, j
Uing the etimate 3.11 in the denominator and e iξ 1 iξ = ξ η i2 e iν dν dη ξ 2 in the numerator, we ee that the abolute value of 3.12 i bounded by Cτ v j. Thi yield the econd claimed etimate. 4 Error analyi of the emi-dicretization in pace In thi ection, we give the proof of the error bound of Theorem 2.2 for the Fourier collocation in pace 2.2. We do o by interpreting the emi-dicretization in pace in the new variable 3.8 a a dicretization of the Zakharov ytem in the new variable 3.5, and we tudy the error of thi dicretization. Tranlating the reult back to the original variable then lead to the error bound of Theorem 2.2. More preciely, the proof i organized a follow. We tart in Section 4.1 below with the variation-of-contant formula for the exact olution in new variable and the olution of the patial emi-dicretization in new variable. In Section 4.2, we then derive bound on all the term that appear in the difference of the two variation-ofcontant formula. They are derived under an additional regularity aumption on the olution of the emi-dicretization in pace. The etimate include in particular error bound for the variable ψ I and ψ P and bound on the operator R of 2.4. In the final Section 4.3, the bound of Section 4.2 are ued to derive Theorem 2.2 with a Gronwall inequality. The additional regularity aumption of Section 4.2 on the olution of the emi-dicretization in pace i jutified with a boottrap argument. Throughout thi ection, we let > d 2 and σ > a in Theorem 2.2, and we denote by C a generic contant that may depend on and σ and in addition on the dimenion d, on the final time T and on the contant M of the regularity aumption 2.7 of Theorem Variation-of-contant formula The proof of Theorem 2.2 i baed on the variation-of-contant formula applied to the difference of the patial emi-dicretization in the new variable 3.8 and the exact olution in the new variable 3.5. Thi read = Ω 2 ϕt ϕ t = e it tω2 ϕt ϕ t t i ut u t ut u = Rt t t ut u t ut u t e it t t t Rt t t Ω 2 θt + t dt, Ω 2 ϑt + t dt 4.1 with θ = uϕ + uψ I I u ϕ + u ψ I and ϑ = ψ P 2 I ψ P 2. In Section 4.2 below, we bound the term on the right-hand ide of 4.1. The proof of Theorem 2.2 i then given in Section Bound on the term in the variation-of-contant formula We denote by et = up ϕt ϕ t + ut, ut u t, u t t t t 1 4.2
the maximal error in ϕ, u and u until time t. In the following lemma, we will aume regularity 2.7 ee alo 3.6 of the exact olution. In addition to that, we will alo aume regularity of the emi-dicrete olution 2.2: ψ t + u t, u t 2M for t t T 4.3 with M from the regularity aumption 2.7. The bound 4.3 will be jutified in final proof of Theorem 2.2 below by a boottrap argument note that the norm in 4.3 are thoe in which the error bound of Theorem 2.2 ha to be hown. Lemma 4.1 Error in ψ I. Under the aumption 2.7, we have, for t T, ψ I t ψ I t C 2 σ + et. Proof. Thi follow from the definition of ψ I in 3.5b, ψ I in 3.8b and e in 4.2, and from Lemma 2.1 applied to the interpolation error ψt ψ t = ψt Iψt. Lemma 4.2 Error in ψ P. Under the aumption 2.7, we have, for t T, ψ P t ψ P t C σ + et. Proof. We write + 1 ψp ψp iϕ = 1 I iϕ + ψi uψ I + I iϕ + ψ I ψ I + u u ψ I + u ψ I ψ I. By the algebra property 1.2 and the bound 2.7 and 3.6, we have iϕ + ψ I uψ I +σ C. The interpolation error in the above decompoition can thu be etimated with Lemma 2.1: 1 I iϕ + ψ I uψ I C σ. The tatement of the lemma then follow from Lemma 2.1, the bound 2.7 on ψ = ψ I and 4.3 on u, the algebra property 1.2, the definition 4.2 of et and Lemma 4.1 on ψ I ψ I applied to the econd term in the above decompoition. Lemma 4.3 Bound of θ. Under the regularity aumption 2.7 and 4.3, we have, for t T, θt C σ + et. Proof. We write θ = 1 I uϕ + uψ I + I u u ϕ + u ϕ ϕ + u u ψ I + u ψ I ψ I. A in the proof of Lemma 4.2, we get 1 I uϕ + uψi C σ for the interpolation error in the above decompoition, and we then apply Lemma 2.1, the algebra property 1.2, the bound 2.7, 3.6 and 4.3, the definition 4.2 of et and Lemma 4.1 on ψ I ψi to the econd term in the above decompoition. 11
Lemma 4.4 Bound of ϑ. Under the regularity aumption 2.7 and 4.3, we have, for t T, ϑt C σ + et. Proof. We write ϑ = 1 I ψ P 2 + I ψp Re ψp ψp + ψp. The claimed etimate then follow from Lemma 2.1, the bound 2.7 and 4.3 on ψ = ψ p and ψ = ψp, repectively, the algebra property 1.2 and Lemma 4.2 on ψ P ψp. In addition to the above bound on θ and ϑ, we need the following bound on the matrix R of 2.4, which alo appear in the variation-of-contant formula 4.1. The bound tate that thi matrix almot preerve the norm. Lemma 4.5. We have Rt v v 1 + t v v, v v H +1 H. Proof. Let vx = j Z d v j e ij x and vx = j Z d v j e ij x. Note that, by the definition of the norm, Rt v v = Ω +1 cotωv + t inctω v 2 + v + t v 2 + Ω Ω intωv + cotω v 2 + v 2 1/2. By the triangle inequality, we can etimate thi quantity by the um of and Ω +1 cotωv + Ω intω v 2 + v 2 Thi yield the claimed etimate. 4.3 Proof of Theorem Ω +1 intωv + Ω cotω v 2 + v 2 1/2 = v v t v 2 1/2 t v v t v v. We tart from the variation-of-contant formula 4.1. Taking norm in thi formula and uing Lemma 4.3, 4.4 and 4.5 on θ, ϑ and R, repectively, yield for the error e of 4.2 t et 1 + t t et + C 1 + t t σ + et dt t a long a the emi-dicrete olution atifie the bound 4.3. Uing Lemma 2.1 to etimate et and the Gronwall lemma, thi implie et C σ 12

To complete the proof, we till have to jutify that 4.3 hold. By a boottrap argument ee, e.g., [19, Section 1.3], the proof of Theorem 2.2 i thu complete. 5 Error analyi of the full dicretization In thi ection, we give the proof of the global error bound for the Lie-Trotter plitting 2.5 tated in Theorem 2.3. A in the previou ection, we interpret the plitting method in the new variable 3.9 a a dicretization of the Zakharov ytem in the new variable 3.5, and we tudy the error of thi dicretization. In view of Theorem 2.2 on the error of the emi-dicretization in pace, we only have to conider here the temporal error in the new variable of Section 3 ϕ t n ϕ n, u t n u n, u t n u n, 5.1 with the pace-dicrete olution ϕ, u and u of 3.8. Throughout thi ection, we let > d 2 and σ 2 a in Theorem 2.3. A in the previou ection, we denote by C a generic contant that may depend on, σ, the dimenion d, the final time T and on the contant M of the regularity aumption 2.7, and now in addition on the contant c of the CFL condition Lady Windermere fan and outline of the proof We decompoe the temporal error 5.1 after n + 1 time tep a ϕ t n+1 ϕ n+1 = ϕ t n+1 ϕ n+1 + ϕ n+1 ϕ n and imilarly for ut n+1 u n+1 and ut n+1 u n+1. In thi decompoition, ϕ n+1, û n+1, u n+1 are eentially numerical olution at time t n+1 = t + n + 1τ when tarting with the exact olution to the patial emi-dicretization 3.8 a initial value at time t n = t + nτ. The above decompoition 5.2 i at the heart of the proof of Theorem 2.3 with Lady Windermere fan. In thi decompoition, the difference ϕ n+1 ϕ n+1, û n+1 u n+1, u n+1 u n decribe the propagation of the global error after n time tep by the numerical method, and the difference ϕ t n+1 ϕ n+1, ut n+1 û n+1, u t n+1 u n are local error of the numerical method. The crucial ingredient of the proof of Theorem 2.3 are bound of thee difference 5.4 and 5.5. Before deriving thee bound, however, we prove in Section 5.2 below regularity propertie of the olution to the patial emi-dicretization in new variable 3.8 and the intermediate olution 5.3. Thee propertie are then ued in Section 5.3 below in combination with an additional regularity aumption on the fully dicrete olution to tudy tability of the method by etimating the difference 5.4. A the method in the new variable involve everal auxiliary variable, we tudy tability in one of thee variable after the other. In Section 5.4 below, we then derive bound on the local error 5.5. Again, we do thi firt for all auxiliary variable and then for the main variable appearing in 5.5. In the final Section 5.5, we put tability and local error bound together to prove Theorem 2.3, thereby enuring the additional regularity aumption of Section 5.3 by an inductive argument. 5.2 Bound on the patially dicrete and the intermediate olution Before etimating error term, we collect the following bound for the olution of the patial emi-dicretization 3.8 and for the intermediate olution defined in 5.3. Both of them appear in the decompoition 5.2 of the error. Lemma 5.1 Bound on the olution of the patial emi-dicretization. Under the regularity aumption 2.7, we have, for t t T, ψ t +4 + u t, u t + ϕ t C. 5.6 Proof. We only prove the etimate of ψ. Thi yield the claimed etimate of ψ. Lemma 5.2 Bound on the intermediate olution. Under the regularity aumption 2.7, we have, for τ t n t T, ψ I,n + v n + ŵ n + ϕ n+1 C. 5.7 Auming in addition the CFL condition 2.8, we alo have ψ +4 P,n + û n, u n C. 5.8 Proof. We firt note that for > d 2 e v e C v, φv e C v, v H, 5.9 with C depending on d and, which follow by uing the exponential erie and the algebra property 1.2. Thee propertie together with the bound 5.6 of the patial emi-dicretization, the algebra property 1.2 and Lemma 2.1 imply the etimate 5.7. For the etimate 5.8, we ue in addition Lemma 3.1 on Ω 2 φiτω and Lemma 4.5 on the matrix R with + 2 intead of. 5.3 Stability etimate We tudy the error propagation of the Lie-Trotter plitting in the new variable 3.9 by etimating the difference 5.4. Recall that the numerical method in the new variable i given by 3.9 and that the intermediate olution appearing in thee difference i given by 5.3. We denote for n 1 by ϕ e n = max j=1,...,n t j ϕ j + u t j, u t j u j, u j 5.1 the maximal error in ϕ, u and u of the dicretization in time until time t n = t + nτ. For convenience, we et e = recall that ϕ i not defined. In addition to the regularity aumption 2.7 on the exact olution of Theorem 2.3, we will aume in thi ection that the fully dicrete numerical olution i bounded in the pace in which the error bound of Theorem 2.3 i uppoed to be hown: ϕ n + u n, u n 2CM for τ t n t T 5.11 with the contant C of 5.6. Uing that 1 incξ ξ and 1 inc 1 2 ξ2 ξ, we get 1 incτωv τ v +1 and 1 inc 1 2 τω2 v τ v +1, repectively. The claimed etimate of the difference thu follow from the regularity propertie 5.6 and 5.7 and the algebra property 1.2 in combination with Lemma 2.1. Lemma 5.1 Local error in ψp. Under the regularity aumption 2.7 and under the CFL condition 2.8, we have, for t n t T, ψp t n ψ P,n Cτ. Proof. For n =, we have ψp t = ψ P, by definition. For n 1, we write θ t n = I iϕ t n + ψi t n u t n ψi t n, θ n = I iϕ t n + ψ I,n v n φ iτ v n e iτω 2 ψ I,n. Together with Lemma 2.1, 5.8 and 5.9 and the bound 5.6 and 5.7, thi yield Ω θ t n θ n C θ t n θ n Cτ. Putting the etimate of a and b together yield the claimed etimate. The local error bound in the auxiliary variable ψi, v, w and ψp following local error bound in the main variable ϕ, u and u. yield the Propoition 5.11 Local error in ϕ. Under the regularity aumption 2.7, we have, for τ t n t T, ϕ t n+1 ϕ n+1 Cτ 2. Proof. a We firt conider ϕ n+1 given by 5.3a and extract it dominant term. 21 a The firt term in the above decompoition i a quadrature error, which i bounded in the norm by Cτ 2 ince t ϕ C by 1.2, 3.8a and 5.6. b A a preparation for etimating the econd term in the decompoition 5.2, we how that v 1 u Cτ. The proof of thi etimate i baed on the decompoition v 1 u = v 1 v 1 + v 1 u t 1 + u t 1 u t. The econd term v 1 u t 1 in thi decompoition can be etimated with Lemma 5.9, and the third term can be etimated uing u t 1 u t = τ u t dt and 5.6. For the firt term, we have v1 v 1 = incτω û 1 u t 1 u 1 2 τ inc 1 2 τω 2 1 u t 1 ince ψ I, = ψ I,, u 1 = û 1 and u 1 = u 1. We thu get from Propoition 5.12 a bound for thi firt term, and finally the above etimate of v 1 u. c With thi preparation, we now conider the econd term in the decompoition 5.2. We firt extract the dominant part of ψ t 1 and ψ 1. With the variationof-contant formula for ψ of 2.2, we get with the quadrature error r = τ ψ t 1 = e iτω2 ψ t iτe iτω2 I u t ψ t ir 5.21 e iτ tω2 I u t + tψ t + t dt τe iτω2 I u t ψ t. Uing t ψ = ϕ and the bound 5.6, thi quadrature error i een to be bounded in the norm by Cτ 2. On the other hand, we have for ψ1 ee 3.9d ψ 1 = e iτω2 I ψ iτu ψ i r 5.22 with the remainder r = τe iτω2 I v1 φ iτv 1 1 ψ + v1 u ψ. By 2.5b, we have v1 C, and hence the term φ iτv1 1 in the above remainder can be etimated with The term v1 u ha been etimated in b. In thi way we get r Cτ by the bound 5.6 with t = t, the algebra property 1.2 and Lemma 2.1. A the extracted dominant part of ψ t 1 in 5.21 and ψ1 in 5.22 are identical by the choice of initial value 2.5c, we get the etimate a tated in the propoition. 5.5 Proof of Theorem 2.3 We finally put the local error bound of Section 5.4 and the tability etimate of Section 5.3 together to deduce the error bound of Theorem
We tart from the decompoition 5.2 and ue Propoition 5.6 and 5.7 on the tability of the method and Propoition 5.11 and 5.12 on the local error. A long a the numerical olution atifie the bound 5.11, thi yield for n 1 e n Cτe n + Cτ 2 for the global error e n+1 of 5.1. For n =, we get e 1 Cτ from Propoition 5.7, 5.12 and 5.13 recall that u = u t, u = u t and e =. Solving thi recurion yield the error bound e n+1 Cτ. Thi error bound jutifie that the regularity aumption 5.11 on the fully dicrete olution alo hold for n + 1 intead of n. In fact, for ufficiently mall τ and t n+1 t T, the regularity 5.11 follow from the error bound and the bound 5.6 on u, u and ϕ. To get the tatement of Theorem 2.3, we have to tranlate the error bound in the new variable back to the original variable 2.2 and 2.5. Thi i done with Lemma 5.5 and 5.1, which yield the error bound ψ t n ψn = ψ P t n ψp,n C τ + e n Cτ. In the following dicuion, all mentioned bound hould hold and are uppoed to hold uniformly in the patial dicretization parameter. Auming that ψn i bounded in H, we get from equation 2.5a for u n+1 and u n+1 the deired tability etimate u n+1, u n+1 e Cτ u n, u n + Cτ ψn, but only for for >, we would looe the factor τ in front of ψn, ee Lemma 4.5 and Thi mean, that we can etimate vn+2 given by 2.5b only in H +1. The equation 2.5a for ψn+2 then ugget, however, that alo ψn+2 can only be etimated in H +1, ee 5.9. We thu looe one order of the Sobolev pace when compared to ψn which i bounded in H. Thi i the formal lo of patial derivative, which occur in thi type of naive etimate. In Figure 2, the abolute value of the Fourier coefficient ψn,j of the numerical olution ψ n x = 1 j= ψ n,j e ij x at time t n t +.15 are plotted veru j. If the CFL condition 2.8 doe not hold, we oberve an intability in high Fourier mode. More preciely, thoe Fourier mode are affected by an intability that violate the CFL condition, i.e., the mode ψ n,j with τ j 2 > 2π. The reaon for thi behaviour become clear from the error analyi in Section 5: for thee high Fourier mode, we can t gain regularity of ψ = ψ P by mean of Lemma 3.1.
