1 Motivation 2 ASIP 3 Results 4 Approach A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
Goal ASIP (Almost Sure Invariance Principle): a.s. approximation of a sequence of RV s S n = X 1 + X X n by Brownian motion (details later) more refined statistical property implies CLT, LIL, WIP, etc. Main idea: S n = f 1 T 1 + f 2 (T 2 T 1 ) + + f n (T n... T 1 ), subtract its mean decay of correlations = approximation by a reverse martingale [Gordin (1969),..., Conze & Raugi (2007)] Cuny & Merlevéde (2014): reverse martingale (with some properties) = ASIP A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
What is new: previous results: vector-valued ASIP for Birkhoff sums over (non-uniformly) hyperbolic systems [Berger (1990), Melbourne & Nicol (2009), Gouëzel (2010)] S n = f T + + f T n where f Hölder µ a T -invariant equilibrium measure new: non-stationary/sequential dynamics = model non-equilibrium and time-varying systems need not have an invariant measure, so use a reference measure (e.g. Lebesgue) in some settings the CLT was already proven, obtain now the ASIP A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
1 Motivation 2 ASIP 3 Results 4 Approach A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
Almost Sure Invariance Principle X k : (Ω, Prob) R random variables S n = X X n σ 2 n := Var(S n ) Definition (ASIP) The sequence S n satisfies a non-stationary (self-norming) ASIP if can find a new (enlarged) probability space (Ω, Prob ) with a Brownian motion W t : Ω R on it can reproduce in distribution the family S k on Ω by S k for some δ > 0: S k E(S k) = W (σ 2 k ) + O(σ1 δ k ) a.s. A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
What we obtain (another way to state ASIP) Definition ( Meaning of ASIP holds for {ϕ l (T l T 1 )} l ) After enlarging the space, can find a sequence of independent centered normal RV s Z k such that sup 1 k n k ϕ i (T i T 1 ) i=1 k i=1 Z i = o(σ 1 β n ) a.s. where stands for subtracting the mean. Furthermore n j=1 E[Z i 2 ] = σn 2 + O(σ n ). (Probability measure can be Lebesgue, or the acip of T when T i T.) Z k = W (σ 2 k ) W (σ2 k 1 ) A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
ASIP = CLT, LIL Assume {X j } j satisfies the ASIP (and have mean zero). Then: it satisfies a (self-norming) Central Limit Theorem: 1 σ n n X j N(0, 1) j=1 where the convergence is in distribution. it satisfies a (self-norming) Law of Iterated Logarithm: lim sup n n j=1 X j 2σ 2 n log log(σ n ) = 1 a.s. lim inf n n j=1 X j 2σ 2 n log log(σ n ) = 1 a.s. A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
1 Motivation 2 ASIP 3 Results 4 Approach A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
Notations, assumptions T n := T n T 1, P n := P Tn = P n P 1 P k : L 1 (X, m) L 1 (X, m) is the Perron-Frobenius (transfer) operator for T k : X X, predual of f f T k on L (m): P T f g dm = f g T dm, for all f L 1 (X, m), g L (X, m) X X [T must be non-singular wrt m, i.e., m(a) 0 = m(t (A)) 0] V L 1 can be BV or Hölder functions (so that P T is quasi-compact on V, ϕ C ϕ V on V) Property (DEC) of a family F of operators [Conze & Raugi]: there are C > 0, γ (0, 1), such that for any n and any sequence P k F and any f V of zero mean P n P 1 f V Cγ n f V Property (MIN) of the family F [Conze & Raugi]: there is δ > 0 such that for any sequence P k in F inf x P n P 1 1(x) δ, n 1. A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
ASIP for expanding maps on the interval Theorem (ϕ n ) a sequence in V such that sup n ϕ n V <. (DEC) and (MIN) hold σ 2 n = Var( n j=1 ϕ j T j ) n 1/2+δ for 0 < δ Then {ϕ n T n } n satisfies the ASIP. E.g., can take β-transformations, V =BV: T n (x) = β n x (mod 1) on the unit interval with β n approaching a fixed β (1, ), and ϕ n ϕ not a coboundary for T β (Conze & Raugi) piecewise expanding maps in higher dimension, V = quasi-hölder functions (similar to Saussol s setting) A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
situation considered by Nándori, Szász and Varjú, A CLT for time-dependent dynamical systems (2006), provided σ n grows as needed. E.g.: T n (x) = a n x (mod 1), a n 2 integer, ϕ n ϕ V = C 1 (S 1 ), ϕ d m = 0, and (1) either same value b is repeated for longer and longer stretches in the a ns, and ϕ is not a coboundary for T b (2) or there are infinitely many k s for which min{a k, a k+1, a k+2 } > L, for L large determined by ϕ. In either of these situations σ n and a self-norming CLT holds. Can have in (1) variance growing arbitrarily slowly (but CLT holds). A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
ASIP for the shrinking target problem, expanding maps Theorem X = [0, 1], T : X X expanding map, preserves acip µ with density bounded below P T has exponential decay in BV (P T defined wrt µ, so P T 1 = 1) A n X sequence of nested sets, ϕ n := 1 An such that: supn ϕ n BV < µ(a n ) n γ for some γ > 0 E n := n j=1 µ(a n) diverges. Then {ϕ n T n } n 1 satisfies the ASIP. E.g.: β-transformations, smooth expanding maps, the Gauss map, mixing Rychlik-type maps A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
ASIP for non-stationary observations on invertible hyperbolic systems. Theorem (T, X, µ) an Axiom-A dynamical system preserving the Gibbs measure µ ϕ j C α a sequence of α-hölder functions sup j ϕ j α < σ 2 n = Var µ ( n j=1 ϕ j T j ) Cn δ for some δ > Then {ϕ j T j } j satisfies the ASIP Follows from a similar result for an expanding map T and Hölder observations ϕ n, by coding with a 2-sided shift and reducing to the future coordinates. A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
1 Motivation 2 ASIP 3 Results 4 Approach A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
Reverse martingale = ASIP Theorem (Cuny & Merlevède, 2014) reverse martingale: filtration (G n ) n 1, X n L 2 (G n, P), E(X n G n+1 ) = 0 a.s. σ 2 n := n k=1 E(X 2 k ), sup n E(X 2 n ) < 0 < a n such that (a n /σ 2 n) n N and (a n /σ n ) n N Assume that (A) n [ k=1 E(X 2 k G k+1 ) E(Xk 2)] = o(a n ) P-a.s. (B) n 1 a v n E( X n 2v ) < for some 1 v 2 Then (after enlarging the space): can find (Z k ) k 1 independent centered normal RV s with E(Zk 2) = E(X k 2) and k sup X i 1 k n i=1 k i=1 ( Z i = o (a n ( log(σn/a 2 n ) + log log a n )) 1/2) P-a.s. A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
Reverse martingale (follow [Conze & Raugi]) T n := T n T 1, P n := P n P n 1 P 1, Q n ϕ := P n(ϕp n 1 1) P n 1 B n := Tn 1 B the filtration then Q n T n ϕ = ϕ, E[ϕ T k B k ] = (Q k ϕ)(t k ) denote ϕ n := ϕ n m(ϕ(t n T 1 )) and let h n := Q n ϕ n 1 + Q n Q n 1 ϕ n Q n Q n 1 Q 1 ϕ 0 ψ n := ϕ n + h n T n+1 h n+1 then U n := ψ n T n is a reverse martingale, and n n ψ k (T k ) = ϕ k (T k ) + h 1 (T 1 ) h n (T n+1 ) k=1 k=1 (DEC) and (MIN) = sup h n V < A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
ASIP for expanding interval maps (Thm. 1) [Conze & Raugi] prove, for U n := ψ n T n n [ E(Uk 2 B k+1) E(Uk 2 )]2 dm c 1 k=1 take a n = σn 2 ε Use Gál-Koksma: n ] [E(Uk 2 B k+1) E(Uk 2 ) k=1 n E(Uk 2 ) c 2σn 2 k=1 = o(σ 1+η n ) = o(a n ) m-a.s. so Condition (A) of the Cuny & Merlevéde Theorem take v = 2 in Condition (B) = {U n = ψ n (T n )} n satisfies the ASIP, and n ψ k (T k ) = k=1 n ϕ k (T k ) + h 1 (T 1 ) h n (T n+1 ) k=1 A. Török (UH) non-stationary ASIP January / 19
