3 WELCOME PREFACE After many years of organising, playing and attending azz concerts in Dublin, I noticed that concert programmes tended to consist of either traditional azz standards, or original music performed with the composer as leader/member of the ensemble Comparing this to azz periods throughout history, I felt that the idea of different performers freely interpreting each other s music without the direct input of the composer was missing To me, this freedom is one of the strengths of azz Playing each other s music and listening to each other s creative interpretations helps to build a community in which new ideas, both musical and non-musical, can develop organically With this in mind, the goal of the is to provide the city with a local collection of contemporary standards, and at the same time give international musicians some insight into the Dublin azz scene at the present moment (201) The compositions in the provide a sample of the work emerging from Dublin It includes, side by side, the works of seasoned professionals and students, selected on an open-submission basis Every composer who submitted at least one complete work is represented Not all of the composers are from Dublin, or even Ireland, but they have all positively contributed to the musical culture of the city It has been very exciting to receive the submissions over the course of the year, and to see such diverse work together in one place It is now my pleasure to share the stack of charts that has been gathering on my piano with the world If you enoy this volume, then I encourage you to come and visit Dublin for yourself, and seek out some of the artists online Please find information about the composers at

5 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thanks to: The composers featured in the book Every one of them consented to lend their compositions free of charge, which was the only way this first volume could come to fruition! Steven McNamara, who saw the value in the proect, designed the book, the cover and offered invaluable advice on the legibility of fonts and sizes in different performance situations My family and friends, who supported the proect and helped to make it happen Finally, the musicians who will use this book A azz composition does not end at the bottom of the page There are infinite potential variations and each new performance gives another perspective from which to hear them It is you who will make the music, and that is ultimately what this is all about Sam Kavanagh
