For a radomly sopped sum S N = X X N of idepede ad ideically disribued copies of X 1 we esablish a firs order asympoics of he local probabiliies PS N = as +. Usig his resul we show he k δ, 0 δ 1 scalig of he local cluserig coefficie of a radomly seleced verex of degree k i a power law affiliaio ework. 2 1 Iroducio Le X 1, X 2,... be idepede ideically disribued radom variables. Le N be a oegaive ieger valued radom variable idepede of he sequece {X i }. The radomly sopped sum S N = X X N is ubiquious i may applicaios. I paricular, he asympoic behavior of he ail probabiliies PS N > is impora i such areas as he collecive risk model, compoud reewal model, models of eleraffic arrivals. The ail probabiliies have araced cosiderable aeio i he lieraure ad heir asympoic behavior is quie well udersood, see, e.g. [1], [9], [11] ad refereces herei. I his oe we are ieresed i he asympoic behavior of he local probabiliies PS N =. Our sudy is moivaed by several quesios from he area of complex ework modelig. A impora class of complex eworks have asympoic degree disribuios of he form S N, where oe or boh X i ad N obey power laws. For his reaso a rigorous aalysis of ework characerisics relaed o verex degree cluserig coefficies, degree-degree correlaio requires a good kowledge of he asympoic behavior of he local probabiliies PS N = as +, [3], [4], [5]. We will prese applicaios i more deail afer formulaig our mai resuls. I wha follows we assume ha PX 1 0 = 1 ad he probabiliies of X 1 form a regularly varyig sequece wih idex α > 1, ha is, PX 1 = = α L 1 as +, 1 where L 1 is slowly varyig a ifiiy. I he paricular case where L 1 admis a posiive limi as +, lim L 1 = a, he radom variable X 1 obeys he power law, PX 1 = a α. 2 Here ad below f g meas f/g 1 as +. We deoe µ = EX 1, for X 1 havig a fiie firs mome. Assumig ha he probabiliies of N form a regularly varyig sequece wih idex γ > 1, PN = = γ L 2 as +, 3 where fucio L 2 is slowly varyig a ifiiy, we obai he followig resul. Theorem 1. Le α, γ > 1. Assume ha 2 ad 3 hold. i For γ > α ad γ > 2 we have ii For α > γ ad α > 2, α 3 we have iii For α = γ > 2, α 3 we have iv For α, γ < 2 we have PS N = ENPX 1 =. 4 PS N = µ 1 P N = /µ. 5 PS N = ENPX 1 = + µ 1 P N = /µ. 6 PS N = 1 α 1γ 1 L 2 α 1 a α 1γ 1/α α 1EZ α 1γ Here Z 1 is a α 1 sable radom variable wih he characerisic fucio Ee iλz1 = e λ α 1 λ α 1π Γ2 α si λ 2 cos α 1π 2. Remark 1. The saemes ii ad iii of Theorem 1 remai valid for α = 3 if we assume, i addiio, ha for some a > 0 ad ε > 0 we have as + 3 PX 1 = a = O l l 1 ε. 8 2
Remark 2. The saemes i, ii ad iii of Theorem 1 exed o radom variables X i saisfyig 1, bu for α γ we eed a exra codiio L 1 L 1/α 1 1 L 1. 9 Resuls of Theorem 1 seem o be ew. We are o aware of earlier work where he asympoic behavior of he local probabiliies like 5, 6, 7 were cosidered. O he oher had, relaio 4 is kow i he lieraure see, e.g., [9], [11], [15]. I has bee esablished assumig ha N has a fiie expoeial mome, ha is, Ee δn < for some δ > 0. Our Theorem 1 i replaces expoeial mome codiio by srucural codiio 3. I Theorem 2 below codiios o he disribuio of N are furher relaxed: for α 2, 3, relaio 4 is esablished uder he miimal codiio PN = = o PX 1 = as Theorem 2. Le α > 1. Suppose ha EN <. For 1 < α 3 we assume ha 2 holds. For α > 3 we assume ha 1 holds. For α > 2 we assume, i addiio, ha ha 10 holds. i For 1 < α < 2 relaio 4 holds. ii For α = 2 he mome codiio EN l 2+τ N <, for some τ > 0, implies 4. iii For 2 < α < 3 relaio 4 holds. iv For α = 3 eiher of he codiios PN = = o 3 l l 1 or 8 imply 4. v For α > 3 relaio 4 holds. I he followig remark we replace codiio 10 of Theorem 2 by he mome codiio EN 1+α <. Noice ha 10 does o follow from EN 1+α <. Remark 3. Le α > 1. Assume ha 2 holds. Suppose ha EN 1+α <. The 4 holds. I is ieresig o compare he local probabiliies of S N wih hose of he maximal summad M N = max 1 i N X i. Assumig ha 1 holds ad EN < i is easy o show ha PM N = ENPX 1 =. 11 Therefore, uder codiios of Theorem 2 he probabiliies PS N = ad PM N = are asympoically equivale. We ex cosider relaio 5. Sufficie codiio for 5 o he disribuio of N preseed i Theorem 1 ii has wo pars: he srucural codiio 3 ad he iequaliy α > γ ellig ha he ail of N is heavier ha ha of X 1. I Theorem 3 below we replace he laer codiio by he miimal oe PX = = o PN = as Furhermore, we ca slighly relax codiio 3 as well. We will assume ha for some c 1 > 1 here exis c 2, c 3 > 0 such ha c 2 PN = 2 /PN = 1 c 3 for ay 1 2 / 1 c Our ex codiio refers o α: give α, here exiss κ > max{α 1 1, 0.5} such ha lim + sup PN = /PN = s = s κ Clearly, 3 implies 13, 14, bu o vice versa. Theorem 3. Le α > 2 ad κ > max{α 1 1, 0.5}. Assume ha 2 holds for 2 < α 3 ad 1 holds for α > 3. Assume ha eiher 3 holds for some γ > 1 or 13, 14 hold ad EN <. i For α > 2, α 3 relaio 12 implies 5. ii For α = 3 relaios 8 ad 12 imply 5. 3
Remark 4. For 2 < α < 3 he resuls of Theorems 2 ad 3 exed o radom variables X i saisfyig 1, 9. Before urig o applicaios we briefly meio wo ope quesios. The firs quesio is abou a k erm k = 2, 3,... asympoic expasio o he probabiliy PS N = as +. The secod oe is abou exedig Theorem 1 o he desiy of a absoluely coiuous radomly sopped sum S N. Applicaio o complex ework modelig. Mahemaical modelig of complex eworks aims a explaiig ad reproducio of characerisic properies of large real world eworks. We meio he power law degree disribuio, shor ypical disaces ad cluserig o ame a few. Here we focus o he cluserig propery meaig by his he edecy of odes o cluser ogeher by formig relaively small groups wih a high desiy of ies wihi a group. I paricular, we are ieresed i he correlaio bewee cluserig ad degree explaied below. Locally, i a viciiy of a verex, cluserig ca be measured by he local cluserig coefficie, he probabiliy ha wo radomly seleced eighbors of he verex are adjace. The average local cluserig coefficie across verices of degree k, deoed Ck, for k = 2, 3,..., describes he correlaio bewee cluserig ad degree. Empirical sudies of real social eworks show ha he fucio k Ck is decreasig [12]. Moreover, i he film acor ework Ck obeys he scalig k 1 [17]. I he Iere graph i obeys he scalig k 0.75 [19]. We are ieresed i modelig ad explaiig he scalig k δ, for ay give δ > 0. Cluserig i a social ework ca be explaied by he auxiliary biparie srucure defiig he adjacecy relaios bewee acors: every acor is prescribed a collecio of aribues ad ay wo acors sharig a aribue have high chaces of beig adjace, cf. [14]. The respecive radom iersecio graph G o he verex se V = {v 1,..., v } ad wih he auxiliary se of aribues W = {w 1,..., w m } defies adjacecy relaios bewee verices wih he help of a radom biparie graph H likig acors o aribues. Acors/verices are assiged iid o-egaive weighs Y 1,..., Y modelig heir aciviy ad aribues are assiged iid o-egaive weighs X 1,..., X m modelig heir araciveess. Give he weighs, a aribue w i is liked o acor v j i H wih probabiliy X i Y j / m idepedely across he pairs W V. The pairs of verices sharig a commo eighbor i H are declared adjace i G. The radom iersecio graph G admis uable power law degree disribuio, o-vaishig global cluserig coefficie, shor ypical disaces, see [3]. Here we show ha for large m, he radom graph G possesses ye aoher ice propery, he uable scalig k δ, 0 δ 1, of respecive codiioal probabiliy C G k = P v 2 v v2 3 v 1, v 3 v 1, dv 1 = k, he heoreical couerpar of Ck. Theorem 4. Le α, γ > 6, β > 0 ad a, b > 0. Le m, +. Assume ha m/ β. Suppose ha weighs X i, Y j are ieger valued ad PX i = a α ad PY j = b γ. The for every k = 2, 3,... he probabiliy C G k coverges o a limi, deoed C k, ad C k ck δ as k Here δ = max { 0; mi{α γ 1; 1} }, C k is give i 79, ad c > 0 is a cosa depedig o α, γ, β, a, b ad he firs hree momes of X 1 ad Y 1. A relaed resul esablishig k 1 scalig i a radom iersecio graph wih heavy ailed weighs Y j ad degeerae X i PX i = c = 1 for some c > 0 has bee show i [2]. The uable scalig 15 is obaied due o he heavy ailed weighs X i. We sugges a simple explaaio of how he weighs of aribues affec C k. A aribue w i wih weigh X i geeraes wih posiive probabiliy a clique i G of size proporioal o X i he clique formed by verices liked o w i. For small α we will observe quie a few large weighs X i. Bu he presece of may large cliques i G may icrease he value of C k cosiderably. Hece, i seems plausible, ha he scalig expoe δ correlaed posiively wih α. For a differe approach o modelig of k δ scalig, for δ = 1, we refer o [7], [17]. 4
Aoher popular ework characerisic ha quaifies saisical depedece of eighborig adjacecy relaios is he correlaio coefficie or rak correlaio coefficie bewee he degrees d 1 ad d 2 of he edpois of a radomly seleced edge. More geerally, oe is ieresed i he disribuio of he bivariae radom vecor d 1, d 2, called he degreedegree disribuio. We briefly meio ha usig he resul of Theorem 1 oe obais from Theorem 2 of [4] ha he radom iersecio graph G admis a uable power law degree-degree disribuio. 2 Proofs Before he proofs we iroduce some oaio ad prese wo auxiliary lemmas. The we prove Remark 3, Theorems 2, 3, ad 1, 4. A he very ed of he secio we prove Remark 2 ad relaio 11. We do o give separae proofs of Remarks 1 ad 4. We oe ha saeme ii of Remark 1 follows from Theorem 3, ad saeme iii is show i he proof of Theorem 1. Furhermore, he proof of Remark 4 is similar o ha of Remark 2. We deoe by c a posiive cosa, which may deped o he disribuios of X ad N ad may aai differe values a differe places. Bu c does ever deped o. Give ieger m > 0, we spli ad deoe PS N = = E PS N = N = I m + I m, 16 I m = E PS N = NI {N m}, I m = E PS N = NI {N>m} J m = E NI {N m}, J m = E NI {N>m}. For a o-radom ieger we deoe S = X X ad M = max 1 i X i, S 1 = X X /2, S 2 = X / X, 17 M 1 = max 1 i /2 X i, M 2 = max /2 <i X i, Q k = sup PS k i = i, L k, δ = P S k /2, M k < δ. Furhermore, i he case where EX 1 <, we deoe µ = EX 1 ad X i = X i µ, ad ˆX i = µ X i. We defie S, M, Qk k, L i he same way as S, M, Q k, L k above, bu for he radom variables X i, i 1. Similarly, we defie Ŝ, Ŝ k i he same way as S, S k above, bu for he radom variables ˆX i, i 1. Give we deoe = µ ad ˆ = µ. I he proofs we boud he probabiliy PS = by combiig wo idepede argumes: for large he probabiliy is small by he local limi heorem ad for large i is small because of he large deviaios pheomeo. The argume is formalized i Lemma 1. Lemma 1. Le 0 < δ < 1. Le, 2 be iegers. We have PS = max δ i PX 1 = i + PS =, M < δ, 18 PS =, M < δ Q 1 L 2, δ + Q 2 L 1, δ. 19 Proof of Lemma 1. I he proof we use some ideas of [20]. We have PS = = PS =, M δ + PS =, M < δ. We evaluae he firs probabiliy o he righ usig he uio boud PS =, M δ PS =, X j δ = PS =, X δ 1 j = δ i PX = ips 1 = i max δ i PX = i. 5
I remais o evaluae he secod probabiliy. We spli PS =, M < δ PS =, S 1 /2, M < δ + PS =, S 2 /2, M < δ PS =, S 1 /2, M 1 < δ + PS =, S 2 /2, M 2 < δ ad use he idepedece of X 1,..., X /2 ad X /2 +1,..., X. We have PS =, S 1 /2, M 1 < δ = 0 i /2 Q 2 = Q 2 PS 2 = i PS 1 = i, M 1 < δ 0 i /2 L 1, δ. We similarly show ha PS =, S 2 /2, M 2 < δ Q 1 PS 1 = i, M 1 < δ L 2, δ. I he proof we will use he local limi heorem [8], [13], [16]. For o-egaive ieger valued iid summads X 1, X 2,... saisfyig 1, we have ha τ := sup b PS = s g b 1 s a 0 as s Here {b } is a ormig sequece. For α < 3 we ca choose b = max { 1, if{x > 0 : P X 1 > x < 1 } }, 21 see formula of [6]. We recall ha b ca be wrie i he form b = β L, where β = max{1/α 1; 0.5} ad where L is a slowly varyig fucio depedig o α ad L 1 for α > 3 we have L s 1. {a } is a ceerig sequece a = 0 for α < 2 ad a = µ wih µ = EX 1 for α > 2, see, e.g., [6]. Furhermore, g is he probabiliy desiy fucio of he sable limi disribuio of he sequece of radom variables {S a /b }. Lemma 2. Le α > 2. Assume ha 1 holds. The as + : µ u PS = µ 1 for ay posiive sequece {u } saisfyig 22 u /b +, u 3 b 2 1 0, u τ /2µ /b Here τ := max{τ k, k } 0 as +. Noice ha 23 requires u /b + a a sufficiely slow rae. Proof of Lemma 2. Deoe for shor = /µ ad = : µ u. Noe ha a = µ. We esablish 22 i a few seps PS = = b 1 g b 1 µ + o1 24 = b 1 g b 1 µ + o1 25 = b 1 g b 1 µ + o1 26 = µ 1 + o1. 27 Here 24 follows from 20 ad he hird relaio of follows from he iequaliy show below 1 1 c u 28 b b b 6
combied wih he mea value heorem oe ha g has a bouded derivaive ad he secod relaio of 23. Furhermore, we obai 27 by approximaig he sum by he iegral of he uimodal desiy g over he uboudedly icreasig domai u b 1 x u b 1 b 1 g b 1 µ µ 1 x u b 1 Fially, 26 follows from 28 ad 29. I remais o prove 28. We have 1 b 1 1 = b b 1 + β L + gxdx µ 1 gxdx = µ β L 1 b =: I 1 + I 2, I 1 = β β β c β 1 b β c u, 30 b b I 2 = 1 1 β L 1 c u L b. 31 I 30 we applied he mea value heorem o x x β. I 31 we applied he iequaliy 1 L s + δ s /L s c δ s s 1 32 o s = ad s + δ s =. To verify his iequaliy for large s > 0 ad δ s = os we use he represeaio L s = cse s 1 εyy 1dy, where εy is a fucio saisfyig εy 0 as y +, ad where he cs coverges o a fiie limi as s +, see, e.g., [6]. Noe ha we ca assume wihou loss of geeraliy ha cs is a cosa as log as L defies a ormig sequece. Lemma 3. Le 2 < α < 3. Assume ha 1 ad 9 hold. Recall he oaio µ = EX 1. For b defied by 21 ad A > 1 we have as + α L 1 c 1 A 1 α, 33 : /µ b A : /µ b A α L 1 α/α 1 c 1 A 1 α L. 34 Proof of Lemma 3. Deoe for shor = b A. Noe ha 1 implies PX 1 > 1 α L 1, where L 1 := α 1 1 L /α 1 Furhermore, 9 implies L 1 L 1 L 1, because L 1 ad L 1 are slowly varyig. Usig Theorem v of [6], we obai from he laer relaio ha L L 1/α 1 1 1/α Recall ha = µ. Usig properies of slowly varyig fucios we evaluae he sums α L 1 c 1 α L 1, 37 : /µ α α/α 1 L1 c 1 α L1 α/α : /µ Furhermore, i view of 36, we have 1 α = 1 A 1 α L 1 α c 1 A 1 α L 1 1 1/α 1, L 1 = L 1 1/α 1 AL L 1 1/α 1 L L 1 1/α 1 L 1/α 1 1 1/α 1. 7
Combiig hese relaios wih 9 we obai 1 α L 1 c 1 A 1 α, 39 L 1 L 1 1/α 1 L 1/α 1 1 1/α 1 L 1 1/α 1 c L α I he very las sep we applied 36 oce agai. Fially, ivokig 39 i 37 ad 39, 40 i 38 we obai 33, 34. Proof of Remark 3. We recall he kow fac ha for a fixed we have Noe ha for ay ieger m > 0, relaio 41 implies I follows from 16 ad 42 ha PS = PX 1 =. 41 I m J m PX 1 =. 42 PS N = lim if + PX 1 = J m. Now, leig m + we obai J m EN ad PS N = lim if EN PX 1 = To show he reverse iequaliy for lim sup PSN = /PX 1 = we cosruc a upper boud for I m, see 16. We have, by he uio boud, PS = PX /, S = = PX = ips 1 = i 44 sup PX = j / j c / α. / i / i PS 1 = i Noe ha his iequaliy holds uiformly i ad. Hece, sup / j PX = j I m c J m α, where J m = E N 1+α I {N>m}. 45 I follows from 16, 42, 45 ha lim sup + PS N = PX 1 = lim sup J m + c J m. I m + lim sup PX 1 = I m PX 1 = 46 Leig m + we obai J m EN ad J m 0. Hece, lim sup + From 43, 47 we coclude ha PS N = /PX 1 = EN. PS N = EN. 47 PX 1 = Proof of Theorem 2. We remark ha 1 implies ha PX 1 = > 0 for sufficiely large. For such we deoe w = PN = /PX 1 = ad w = max{ws : s }. Observe ha 10 implies w, w = o1 as +. We eed w, w i he proof of iii-v. We will assume here ha is sufficiely large so ha w ad w are well defied. 8
We oe ha he argume of he proof above leadig o 43 remais valid. Therefore we oly eed o prove 47. Proof of i. We esimae he probabiliy PS = usig Lemma 1. Le δ = α 1/2α. Ivokig i 18 ad 19 he iequaliies show below max δ j PX 1 = j c α, Q k c 1/α 1, L k, δ c α/α 1 α, 48 we obai PS = c α. The laer iequaliy implies I follows from 49 ha lim sup I m c α J m. 49 I m PX 1 = c J m 0 as m Fially, 46 ad 50 imply 47. I remais o prove 48. The firs iequaliy of 48 follows from 1. The secod iequaliy follows by he local limi heorem see 50 of [8]. The hird iequaliy follows from 99. Proof of ii. Fix τ > 0. We show below ha PS = c 2 l 2+τ. 51 Noe ha 51 implies I m c 2 E N l 2+τ NI {N m}. The laer iequaliy ogeher wih 46 ad 42 implies 47, because E N l 2+τ NI {N m} = o1 as m +. Le us prove 51. We disiguish wo cases. For l 1+0.5τ we have, by he local limi heorem 50 of [8], PS = c 1 c 1 l1+0.5τ 2 2 c 2 l 2+τ. For l 1+0.5τ < we show ha PS = c 2 usig Lemma 1 similarly as i he proof of saeme i above. The oly differece is ha for α = 2 auxiliary resul 99, used i he proof of he hird iequaliy of 48, is valid uder addiioal codiio 100. This codiio is easily verified for x = /2, y = /4 ad each saisfyig < l τ. To derive he laer iequaliy from l 1+0.5τ < we argue by coradicio. For 0 l τ we have for sufficiely large 0 l 1+0.5τ 0 l τ l1+0.5τ Proof of iii. We shall show ha l τ = 1 + o1 l 0.25τ >. I m c α J m + w 1/2 /2µ. 52 Noe ha 52 ogeher wih 46 ad 42 implies 47. I remais o prove 52. We spli I m = PS = PN = = I m I m.4, 53 m<< where I m.j = I m.j = N j PS = PN = ad where N 0 = ; +, ± = µ ±, = 1/α 1 w 1/2 /2µ, 54 N 1 = m; 2µ [ ] [, N 2 = 2µ ;, N 3 = + ; 2 µ 9 ], N 4 = 2 µ ; +.
We obai 52 from he bouds show below I m.j c α w 1/2, j = 0, 2, 3, ad I m.j c α J 2µ m, j = 1, Proof of 55 for j = 0, 1, 2. We firs show ha PS = = P S = c α for N 1 N We choose δ = α 1/2α ad apply Lemma 1 o he probabiliy P S =. From 18, 19 we obai P S = max δ i P X 1 = i + c α. 1 2 Q L, δ Q L, δ 57 k I he las sep we used 48. We oe ha 48 for L, δ follows from Theorem 5 iii. Now, for N 1, he iequaliies /2 < ad 56 imply Hece he boud I m.1 c α J m. For N 2 we use c ad 56 o show ha PS = c c 1 α N 2 P S = c α. 58 α N 2 c w α 1/2 /2µ. 59 Furhermore, he iequaliy PN = c α, N 2, which follows from 10, implies I m.2 c α w α 1/2 /2µ For N 0 we use he local limi heorem boud P S = c 1/α 1 ad obai I m.0 { N 0 max P S = PN = } c α w 1/2. 61 N 0 2µ Proof of 55 for j = 3, 4. For N 3 N 4 we have ˆ > 0. We evaluae PS = = PŜ = ˆ similarly as i he proof of 19 PŜ = ˆ P Ŝ 1 Q 2 PŜ1 c ˆ α. ˆ /2, Ŝ = ˆ + P Ŝ2 ˆ /2, Ŝ = ˆ ˆ /2 + Q 1 c 1/α 1 ad he iequal- I he las sep we ivoke he local limi heorem boud Q k iy, which follows from 106, PŜk ˆ /2 c ˆ 1 α α/α 1. For N 3 we apply c ad 62. We have PS = c ˆ α c 1 α N 3 N 3 60 PŜ2 ˆ /2 62 w α 1/2 /2µ. 63 From 63 ad PN = w /µ α, N 3, we coclude ha I m.3 c α w /2µ. For N 4 we use ˆ. Now 62 implies PS = c α ad we have I m.4 c α PN = c α J m. 64 N 4 10
Proof of iv. We proceed similarly as i he proof of saeme iii above. We spli I m usig 53, bu we pu = l l l i 54. The boud I m.0 = o 3 follows from he boud PN = = o 3 l l 1 ad he local limi heorem boud P S = c / l, cf. 61. Aleraively, 8 implies 121, see Remark 6. Usig 121 we show ha he sequece u := µ saisfies he hird codiio of 23. Remaiig wo codiios of 23 are easy o check. Now Lemma 2 implies N 0 PS = µ 1. Fially, ivokig 10 we obai I m.0 = o 3. For N 1 N 2 we apply 57 wih δ = 1/3.
