MAP OF CENTRAL LONDON activity Use the map to plot the route Kate and William s wedding procession will take from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey. If you were a guest at the wedding how would you get there? What would you see in London on your way there? THE ROYAL FAMILY activity The Royal family tree shown here goes back to George V, who ruled in Trace your family tree back to the start of the 20th century and draw it out in a tree diagram. Can you trace it back even further? ABBEY activity Having read some background information on the history of Westminster Abbey, write a diary entry as though you are Kate Middleton or Prince William, having just been married there. How would you have felt to have followed in the footsteps of so many rulers and celebrated people? THE KINGS AND QUEENS OF BRITAIN activity Look at the list of kings and queens, and have a competition to see who can remember the most names. Who can say all the names of the different families in order. Look at ways of developing memory skills to help remember long sequences. 4 Westminster Abbey Since it was first completed in 1065, Westminster Abbey (right) has been the favourite church of England s kings and queens. In 1066, the coronations of Harold II and then William the Conqueror took place here, and since then all of England s monarchs (except for two) have been crowned at the Abbey. Edward s Abbey was rebuilt by Henry III in the 1200s, and Henry VII added more to it a few hundred years later. Today, the Abbey is a working church and a great monument to London s long history. The Abbey is open to visitors except during services. The two English monarchs not crowned at the Abbey were Edward V, who died before he had chance to be crowned, and Edward VIII, who gave up the throne before he was crowned. Fit for a King The Coronation Chair (left) was built for Edward I and first used by his son Edward II in It has been used at every coronation since then, even though, in earlier times, a few Abbey schoolboys and others had carved their initials on it! Tomb Trail The Abbey is the perfect place for spotting famous names from history. The first king to be buried there was Edward the Confessor in January 1066, and his massive carved and decorated tomb (right) stands immediately behind the high altar. Lots of other kings and queens After Edward the Confessor s death all sorts of miracles were said to have taken place around his tomb. In 1161 he was made a saint and his tomb is still one of the most sacred places in the Abbey. are buried here too, along with many poets, writers, musicians and scientists. 5 The Royal Family The royal family is the name given to those closely related to the monarch. The current royal family is known as the House of Windsor. The Queen s children, Charles (The Prince of Wales), Anne (The Princess Royal), Andrew (The Duke of York) and Edward (The Earl of Wessex) all carry out official duties, as do some other members of the family. When Kate Middleton marries William, her spur will be added down on the bottom right.
