Heide Balance in Human Netwoks P. Gawoński and K. Ku lakowski axiv:physics/5385v2 [physics.soc-ph] 11 Ma 25 Depatment of Applied Compute Science, Faculty of Physics and Applied Compute Science, AGH Univesity of Science and Technology al. Mickiewicza 3, PL-359 Kaków, Poland August 25, 218 Abstact Recently, a continuous dynamics was poposed to simulate dynamics of intepesonal elations in a society epesented by a fully connected gaph. Final state of such a society was found to be identical with the socalled Heide balance (HB), whee the society is divided into two mutually hostile goups. In the continuous model, a polaization of opinions was found in HB. Hee we demonstate that the polaization occus also in Baabási-Albet netwoks, whee the Heide balance is not necessaily pesent. In the second pat of this wok we demonstate the esults of ou fomalism, when applied to efeence examples: the Southen women and the Zachay club. PACS numbes: Ge Keywods: numeical calculations; sociophysics 1 Intoduction The Heide balance [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] is a final state of pesonal elations between membes of a society, eached when these elations evolve accoding to some dynamical ules. The elations ae assumed to be symmetic, and they can be fiendly o hostile. The undelying psycho-sociological mechanism of the ules is an attempt of the society membes to emove a cognitive dissonance, which we feel when two of ou fiends hate each othe o ou fiend likes ou enemy. As a 1
esult of the pocess, the society is split into two goups, with fiendly elations within the goups and hostile elations between the goups. As a special case, the size ofone goupis zeo, i.e. all hostile elationsaeemoved. HB is the final stateifeachmembeinteactswith eachothe; inthe famesofthegaphtheoy, whee the poblem is fomulated, the case is epesented by a fully connected gaph. Recently a continuous dynamics has been intoduced to descibe the time evolution of the elations[6]. In this appoach, the elations between nodes i and jwee epesented by matix elements (i, j), which wee eal numbes, fiendly ((i,j) > ) o hostile ((i,j) < ). As a consequence of the continuity, we obseved a polaization of opinions: the absolute values of the matix elements (i, j) incease. Hee we continue this discussion, but the condition of maximal connectivity is elaxed, as it could be unealistic in lage societies. The pupose of fist pat of this wok is to demonstate, that even if HB is not pesent, the above mentioned polaization emains tue. In Section II we pesent new numeical esults fo a society of N = 1 membes, epesented by Baabási- Albet (BA) netwok [7]. Although this size of consideed social stuctue is athe small, it is sufficient to obseve some chaacteistics which ae diffeent than those in the exponential netwoks. In second pat (Section III) we compae the esults of ou equations of motion with some examples, established in the liteatue of the subject. The Section is closed by final conclusions. 2 Calculations fo Baabási-Albet netwoks The time evolution of (i,j) is detemined by the equation of motion [6] d(i, j) dt = { 1 ( (i,j) ) 2 } (i, k)(k, j) (1) R whee R is a sociologically justified limitation on the absolute value of (i, j) [6]. Hee R = 5.. Initial values of (i, j) ae andom numbes, unifomly distibuted in the ange (.5,.5). The equation is solved numeically with the Runge-Kutta IV method with vaiable length of timestep [8], simultaneously k 2
fo all pais (i,j) of linked nodes. The method of constuction of BA netwoks was descibed in [9]. The connectivity paamete is selected to be M = 7, because in this case the pobability p(m) of HB has a clea minimum fo BA netwoks of N = 1 nodes, and p(m = 7).5 (see Fig. 1). This choice of M is motivated by ou aim to falsify the esult on the polaization of opinions. This polaization was demonstated [6] to be a consequence of HB; theefoe, the question hee is if it appeas also when HB is not pesent. An example of time evolution of such a netwok is shown in Fig. 2. Ou esult is that the polaization is pesent in all investigated cases. As time inceases, the distibution of (i,j) gets wide and finally it eaches a stable shape, with two lage peaks at (i,j) ±R and one smalle peak at the cente, whee (i,j). In Fig. 3, we show a seies of histogams of (,j) in subsequent times (A-E). Paticula netwoks diffe quantitatively with espect to the heights of the peaks, but these diffeences ae small. We note hee that when some links ae absent, the definition of HB should be somewhat elaxed, because some othe links, which do not ente to any tiad (i,j,k), will not evolve at all. Theefoe we should admit that some negative elations suvive within a given goup. We classify a final state of the gaph as HB if thee ae no chains of fiendly elations between the subgoups. On the othe hand, moe than two mutually hostile subgoups can appea. These facts wee ecognized aleady in liteatue [3, 5]. Supisingly enough, subgoups of 1 < N < 97 nodes ae neve found in ou BA netwoks. On the contay, in the exponential netwoks goups of all sizes wee detected. In Figs. 4 and 5 we show diagams fo BA netwoks and exponential netwoks, espectively. Each point at these diagams maks the value of (i,j) and the size of the subgoup which contains nodes (i, j). Links between diffeent subgoups ae omitted. We see that fo BA netwoks (Fig.4), the lowest value of N is 97. The emaining thee nodes ae linked with all othe nodes by hostile elations. 3
3 Examples In Ref. [6], an example of polaization of opinions on the lustation law in Poland in 1999 was bought up. The pesented statistical data[1] displayed two maxima at negative and positive opinions and a lowe value at the cente of the plot. In ou simulations pefomed fo fully connected gaphs [6], the obtained value fo the cente was zeo. Howeve, it is clea that in any goup lage than, say, 5 pesons some intepesonal elations will be absent. Taking this into account, we can claim than the statistical data of [1] should be compaed to the esults discussed hee athe than to those fo a fully connected gaph. Hee we epoduce a peak of the histogam at its cente, on the contay to the esults in [6]. This fact allows to speak on a qualitative accodance of the esults of ou calculations with the statistical data of [1]. Next example is the set of data of the attendance of 18 Southen women in local meetings in Natchez, Missoui, USA in 1935 [11]. These data wee used to compae 21 methods of finding social goups. The esults wee analysed with espect to thei consensus, and anked with consensus index fom.543 (much wose than all othes) to.968. To apply ou dynamics, we use the coelation function < p(i,j) > < p(i) >< p(j) > as initial values of (i,j). Ou method poduced the division (1-9) against (1-18), what gives the index value.968. As a by-poduct, the method can povide the time dynamics of the elations till HB and, once HB is eached, the leadeship within the cliques [12]. We should add that actually, we have no data on the possible fiendship o hostility between these women, then the intepetation of these esults should be done with cae. Last example is the set of data about a eal conflict in the Zachay kaate club [13, 14, 15]. The input data ae taken fom [16]. All initial values of the matix elements ae educed by a constant ǫ to evade the case of ovewhelming fiendship. The obtained splitting of the goup is exactly as obseved by Zachay: (1-8,11-14,17,18,2,22) against (9,1,15,16,19,21,23-34). These esults wee checked not to vay fo ǫ between 1. and 3.. The status of all goup membes can be obtained with the same method as in the pevious example. 4
To conclude, the essence of Eq. (1) is the nonlinea coupling between links (i, j), which poduces the positive feedback between the actual values of the elations and thei time evolution. We should add that the idea of such a feedback is not entiely new. It is pesent, fo example, in Boltzmann-like nonlinea maste equations applied to behavioal models [17]. On the contay, it is absent in late woks on fomal theoy of social influence [18]. On the othe hand, the theoies of status [12] ae close to the method of tansition matix, known in non-equilibium statistical mechanics [19]. Refeences [1] F. Heide, J. of Psychology 21 (1946) 17.
