Dualities
Dualities theory 1 on background F 1 R 1,n theory 2 on background F 2 R 1,k the same physics
Dualities theory 1 on background F 1 R 1,n theory 2 on background F 2 R 1,k the same physics The backgrounds F 1/2 often include more data than just geometry! The geometric data is often that of a manifold of special holonomy.
Dualities theory 1 on background F 1 R 1,n theory 2 on background F 2 R 1,k the same physics The backgrounds F 1/2 often include more data than just geometry! The geometric data is often that of a manifold of special holonomy. consequences: moduli spaces agree: M 1 = M 2, i.e. massless states agree massive states agree dynamics and observables agree However: often need to work in specific limits/truncations to have tractable situation
Dualities theory 1 on background F 1 R 1,n theory 2 on background F 2 R 1,k the same physics The backgrounds F 1/2 often include more data than just geometry! The geometric data is often that of a manifold of special holonomy. Dualities can be related by fibrations (with singular fibres): F 1/2 X 1/2 B m theory 1 on background X 1 R 1,n m theory 2 on background X 2 R 1,k m the same physics
Example: Mirror Symmetry is Tduality type IIA string on Sr 1 R 1,8 type IIB string on S1/r 1 R1,8 ` Tduality '
Example: Mirror Symmetry is Tduality type IIA string on T 3 R 1,6 type IIB string on T 3 R 1,6 3 Tdualities extra data: Bfield!
Example: Mirror Symmetry is Tduality type IIA string on X R 1,3 type IIB string on X R 1,3 `mirror symmetry ' extra data: Bfield! from SYZ fibrations [Strominger,Yau,Zaslow] of CalabiYau mirror manifolds X and X : T 3 X S 3 T 3 X S 3.
Example: Mirror Symmetry is Tduality type IIA string on X R 1,3 type IIB string on X R 1,3 `mirror symmetry ' extra data: Bfield! M IIA = M IIB = M V M H where M V = complexified Kähler moduli of X = complex structure of X M H = complex structure of X = complexified Kähler moduli of X comparing more refined properties leads e.g. to: GromovWitten invariants of X from periods of the mirror X Homological mirror symmetry
Story 1: Mirror Symmetry and G 2 manifolds For (co)associative fibrations T 3 J M 4 or T 4 J M 3 on a G 2 manifold J, can use the same logic leading to [Acharya]: type IIA string on J R 1,2 exploiting T 3 bration type IIB string on J R 1,2 or type IIA/B string on J R 1,2 type IIA/B string on J R 1,2 a coarse invariant is [Shatashvili, Vafa] exploiting T 4 bration dimm C = b 2 + b 3
Mirror Symmetry for TCS G 2 twisted connected sums [Kovalev; Corti,Haskins,Nordström, Pacini] are defined by the data: acyl CalabiYau threefolds X ± = Z ± \ S 0± + a G 2 manifold J a matching φ : S 0+ S 0
Mirror Symmetry for TCS: T 4 acyl CalabiYau threefolds X ± = Z ± \ S 0± + a matching φ : S 0+ S 0 a G 2 manifold J expectation: there exist coassocitive T 4 fibrations restricting to the SYZ fibrations of X ± (see [Donaldson]). The corresponding mirror J is constructed from acyl CalabiYau threefolds X± = Z± \ S0± + the G 2 manifold J a matching φ : S0+ S0 Found an explicit construction for Z ± = toric hypersurface [AB,del Zotto]. In general: b 2 (J) + b 3 (J) = b 2 (J ) + b 3 (J ) H (J, Z) = H (J, Z)
Mirror Symmetry for TCS: T 3 acyl CalabiYau threefolds X ± = Z ± \ S 0± + a matching φ : S 0+ S 0 a G 2 manifold J expectation: if X + (and S + ) is elliptic, there exist an associative T 3 fibration restricting to the SYZ fibration of X and the elliptic fibration on X +. The corresponding mirror J is constructed from acyl CalabiYau threefolds X and X + + the G 2 manifold J a matching φ : S0+ S 0 Found an explicit construction for Z ± = toric hypersurface [AB,del Zotto].
In general: b 2 (J) + b 3 (J) = b 2 (J ) + b 3 (J ) H (J, Z) = H (J, Z) For [Joyce] orbifolds, our mirror map is consistent with CFT realization [Acharya; Gaberdiel,Kaste; AB, del Zotto].
Lessons from G 2 mirror symmetry Starting with a smooth J, J or J can be singular.
Lessons from G 2 mirror symmetry Starting with a smooth J, J or J can be singular. This is similar to mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces; every K3 fibre of X ± and hence of J S J S 3 has ADE singularities.
Lessons from G 2 mirror symmetry Starting with a smooth J, J or J can be singular. This is similar to mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces; every K3 fibre of X ± and hence of J S J S 3 has ADE singularities. These are perfectly wellbehaved due to the Bfield, so we conjecture: There exist metrics of G 2 holonomy on twisted connected sum G 2 manifolds J in which every K3 fibre of X ± (and J) has ADE singularities.
Story 2: MTheory/Heterotic Duality Starting point [Witten] (see also talks by [Acharya; Morrison]): MTheory on K3 R 1,6 Heterotic String Theory on T 3 R 1,6 with a flat E 8 E 8 bundle W on T 3 the same physics
Story 2: MTheory/Heterotic Duality Starting point [Witten] (see also talks by [Acharya; Morrison]): MTheory on K3 R 1,6 Heterotic String Theory on T 3 R 1,6 with a flat E 8 E 8 bundle W on T 3 the same physics Let s fiber this data over S 3 (see [Donaldson]): MTheory on J R 1,3 the same physics Heterotic String Theory on X R 1,3 with a holomorphic E 8 E 8 bundle V on X T 3 X S 3 with X a CalabiYau manifold K3 J S 3 with J a G 2 manifold expectation: coassocitive K3 fibration for J a TCS G 2 manifold
Moduli space The moduli spaces are { } M M = C 3 + iφ 3 L H 3 (J) dim C M M = b 3 (J) L M het = {geometry of X + bundle V + NS5branes}
Moduli space The moduli spaces are { } M M = C 3 + iφ 3 L H 3 (J) dim C M M = b 3 (J) L M het = {geometry of X + bundle V + NS5branes} One can work out X and V explicitly for TCS G 2 manifolds, assuming S ± are elliptic: J = {X + S 1 } {X S 1 } X = {(dp 9 \ T 2 ) T 2 } {(dp 9 \ T 2 ) T 2 } V = {V + } {V } X is the Schoen CalabiYau threefold with h 1,1 = h 2,1 = 19, [Kovalev,AB,SchäferNameki].
Moduli space The moduli spaces are { } M M = C 3 + iφ 3 L H 3 (J) dim C M M = b 3 (J) L M het = {geometry of X + bundle V + NS5branes} One can work out X and V explicitly for TCS G 2 manifolds, assuming S ± are elliptic: J = {X + S 1 } {X S 1 } X = {(dp 9 \ T 2 ) T 2 } {(dp 9 \ T 2 ) T 2 } V = {V + } {V } X is the Schoen CalabiYau threefold with h 1,1 = h 2,1 = 19, [Kovalev,AB,SchäferNameki]. We were able to prove: dimm het = dimm M
Lessons from heterotic/mtheory duality If the structure group G of V has nonabelian commutant G in E 8 E 8, there are ADE singularities in every K3 fibre of J. conjecture (again) : There exist metrics of G 2 holonomy on twisted connected sum G 2 manifolds J in which every K3 fibre of X ± has ADE singularities.

There are cases in which G 0 for arbitrary (small) deformations, i.e. conjecture: codimension R = 4 nonsmoothable singularities on G 2.

The (complicated) structure of the bundle moduli space corresponds to (a subspace of) an extended G 2 moduli space.
The (complicated) structure of the bundle moduli space corresponds to (a subspace of) an extended G 2 moduli space. Question: There are quantum corrections couting curves on X on heterotic side which sum to a E 8 Θfunction [Donagi,Grassi,Witten]... what do these become on J? Do they count something interesting (such as associatives) there? What is the relation to recent work of [Joyce]?
