5 Quantum Networks Quantum networks consist of quantum channels connecting quantum nodes Quantum channels: allow distribution of quantum states, including entanglement. Photons are the only real option. Fibers. Free-space links. Satellites. Quantum nodes: Single-photon sources, sources of entanglement, single-photon detectors, quantum memories, quantum transducers, quantum processors. Many different physical systems are being studied.
6 Quantum Key Distribution A quantum solution for the security challenge posed by quantum computers The main near-term application for quantum networks, and a natural basis for the next stages. A lot of technological overlap between next generations of QKD systems (measurement-device independent, fully dev. indep.) and other goals (q teleportation, q repeaters). E.g. Calgary and Hefei experiments. Major efforts in other countries. China: Beijing-Shanghai QKD chain (over 1000 km), launched quantum satellite; quantum satellite projects in Canada, Japan, Singapore; Quantum CTek has 1000 employees, major South Korea Telecom investment in ID Quantique (Switzerland).
7 Towards the Quantum Internet Quantum repeaters for long-distance quantum channels: quantum networks with small-scale quantum processors and memories in each node Quantum sensing networks using entanglement (e.g. atomic clocks, telescopes) Long-term vision is full-scale distributed quantum computing. Dialogue with the supercomputing community might prove very fruitful.

23 DISCUSSION: THE PANELLISTS MOST IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATION TO MAKE THESE TECHNOLOGIES THRIVE Build a community around the technology, bringing all relevant expertise to the table; this includes engaging with the wider high-performance computing community and engaging researchers working on classical networks, in particular for development and production stage US should embrace quantum communication
