THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS SUPERSEDE OR EXPAND UPON THE EMBARK INSTRUCTIONS Please read all instructions carefully and follow the application guidelines below. This online application (Embark) is designed in a way that allows Fulbright programs in various countries to use the same form. Please note that Brazilian applicants do not need to complete all of the fields in the Embark application. In addition to providing guidelines and tips, this instruction package will identify those fields that Brazilian applicants do not need to complete. Please read these instructions carefully and follow the appropriate guidelines when filling out the application. A general instruction package for all applicants is available through the Embark application website. The Application Process has 6 Steps: STEP 1: REVIEW ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND AWARD CONDITIONS; STEP 2: REGISTERING ONLINE; STEP 3: ANSWER TO THE PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS; STEP 4: COMPLETE THE APPLICATION FORM; STEP 5. Do you have or are you applying for U.S. Permanent Residency or are you a U.S. Citizen? If you have or are applying for U.S. Permanent Residency, or you are a U.S. Citizen you are ineligible for a Fulbright award. 2. Home Country/Country Applying from Select Brazil. Selecting another country will send your application to the Fulbright Office in that country and Fulbright Brazil will not receive it. If our office does not receive your application, it cannot be reviewed or considered for an award. 3. Program, Select Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program. 4. Category of Grant Refer to the Summary of Award Conditions (page 2 of this document) and select the appropriate category. Research: If the primary purpose of your project is to conduct research Lecture: If the primary purpose of your project is to teach or team-teach at least one full semester course Lecture/Research: If your project will include significant portions of both teaching and research as defined above. After answering the Preliminary Questions, you will be redirected to the Home screen. You can start your application by clicking on Application Form. 4
5 STE P 4: COM PL E T E THE APP LI C A TI O N F ORM Of t e n s p e c i f i c i n s t r u c t i o n s f o r c o m p l e t i n g a q u e s t i o n o r i t e m i s p r o v i d e d i n th e a p p l i ca t i o n, b u t p l e a s e r e v i e w t h e f ol l ow i n g i m p o r ta n t i n f or m a t i o n : - Personal Information: the information provided would only be used for internal purposes, only by the Fulbright Commission and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars - CIES: Fam i l y N am e / Su r n am e, Fi r s t, M i d d l e : it is very important that you list your name exactly as it appears (or will appear) on your passport. Do n o t omit/neglect any of your names. Do not use diacritical markings; In the box Sp eci al A w ar d N am e, please indicate the Program that you re applying (Page 2). - Please, indicate the grant period, in accordance with your Letter of Invitation or the Institute s calendar. - List all referees who will submit a letter of reference for you. Although you are listing them here, you must register the same referees at a later stage of your application (Menu 4 > References). 5
6 - Provide information and attach your letter of invitation in the document upload section later in the application, available on Page 7 ; - If you re applying for multiple awards for the Chairs on Brazilian Studies at Emory, and/or at UMass Amherst and/or at the George Washington University, please, indicate the awards that would you like to apply in order of preference. - Address: it is very important that a mailing company can reach the informed address, so please use your address as stated in all your correspondence. e.g.: Rua Getulio Vargas, and not Getulio Vargas Street; -Project Statement: this is an essential and highly important part of your application. Scholars with the most compelling, theoretically sound, wellwritten, feasible proposals are generally recommended for awards. You should take great care in writing a clear and detailed description of the project that you intend to pursue. For all types of awards, you must demonstrate that residence in the United States is essential for your project that knowledge in a particular area of learning will be advanced, and that plans have been made for the dissemination of the results both in Brazil and the United States. Clearly show your project s relation to the study of the United States or the relationship between Brazil and the United States and demonstrate the way in which mutual understanding between the two countries will be enhanced (i.e. development of long-term institutional linkages, relevance to contemporary public policy debate, shared knowledge in a particular area of research, etc.). For additional instructions specific to each award category, applicants should consult the information below. Your Project Statement will be evaluated on its academic merit, feasibility of the project, and suitability to Fulbright Brazil. Le ct u r i n g A w a r d s outline proposed lecturing activity; note areas of expertise within field of study; discuss your teaching experience; if your proposal is part of a longer-term project, please elaborate; explain choice of institutional affiliation; describe project goals and end-product; discuss the significance of the project for the field. 7 - The CV describes academic credentials and demonstrates a record of scholarly achievements. The CV should not exceed three pages. - Required i f you are applying for Visiting Professor or Fulbright Junior Faculty Member Award. Letters of invitation should be typed on institutional letterhead and signed. The letter should also contain the proposed academic year. - NOT Required if you re applying for any Visiting Research Chair awards, there s no need to make arrangements for affiliation. N O T E : The following page numbers are different depending upon your Category of Grant. Lecture or Lecture/Research applicants can upload a Course Syllabi. Page 8 - Lecture or Lecture/Research Upload up to 1 pages of sample syllabi for courses you propose to teach or have taught. Page 9 - Lecture or Lecture/Research Page 8 - Research - Required if you re applying for Visiting Professor or Junior Faculty Member Award. Please, add a letter from your Host Institution, which attests that your English language proficiency is compatible with the proposed teaching and research activities. - NOT Required if you are applying for the Visiting Research Chair awards. Page 1 - Lecture or Lecture/Research Page 9 Research - NOT Required. Any information that you provide in these fields will NOT be referenced in the processing of your application. Page 11 - Lecture or Lecture/Research Page 1 Research - If you have previously entered the United States on a J-1 or J-2 visa, please provide copies of previously issued DS- 219(s) and visas. 7

Attention to upload all documents in just one file, otherwise the second file invalidates the first, and so on. Page 14 - Lecture or Lecture/Research Page 13 Research - NOT Required if you re applying for any Fulbright Chair Program Award. - Required if you re applying for Visiting Professor or Junior Faculty Member Award, upload a letter of support/leave from your home institution, confirming your ability to participate in a Fulbright award. Often specific instructions for each of the Supplemental Forms is provided in the Application, but please review the following important information: - Le t t e r o f R e f e r e n ce / R e co m m e n d at i o n : you must have three letters of reference (or recommendation) submitted on your behalf. 13 STE P 6 : REVI EW AN D SUB MIT THE O NLINE A PPLICA TIO N F O R M 5. Before you can submit your online application electronically, your application will be reviewed for completeness. If there is missing information, you will be prompted to correct by the Application Inspector. 6. After completing your online application and thoroughly reviewing it, you can submit it electronically to the Fulbright Commission. Please note that after submitting your application you will be able to access and print it, as well as the supplemental forms and documents, but you will not be able to make any changes to your application.
