The Blue Devils own two shutouts in that span 2012 and The Hokies lone shutouts of Duke came in 2004 and LAST TIME OUT Duke is coming off of a tough 1-1 double overtime draw with Presbyterian Tuesday night. However, the Hokies followed that with a 5-1 loss to Nebraska Omaha and a 1-0 loss to Pacific. They most recently rebounded with a 2-1 triumph over Binghamton. Marcelo Acuna paces the offense with three goals. The Hokies only have five goals and three assists in the four games combined. They are averaging just 11 shots per game. 3 MISSING MATTHIAS The Blue Devils will be without the services of rookie left back Matthias Frick after he was issued a red card Tuesday night. Frick had started all four games and has played all by 49 minutes this season. A threat on set pieces, he owns a goal and an assist. ROOKIES IN STARTING XI Duke has had three freshmen in its Starting XI through four games. The Blue Devils are one of three ACC schools to start at least three rookies. Will Pulisic is one of two rookie goalkeepers to be manning the net for his team in NC State has the most freshmen in its starting lineup with five, while Virginia also has three. The Wolfpack s goalie - Leon Krapf is the other rookie goalkeeper in the 12-team league. DUKE SCORES SHUTOUTS For the first time since 2004, Duke posted shutouts in its first two games of the season. The two shutouts match the total from last season. The 2004 squad went on to advance to the NCAA title game and posted an overall record. THE FIVE FEARLESS LEADERS The Blue Devils will be led by the five captains in Kevon Black, Cody Brinkman, Markus Fjørtoft, Carter Manley and Brian White. Black also served as a captain in 2016 and all five are likely starters and will play valuable minutes. STRONG STARTS Duke has scored a goal in the first half of all three of its wins this season. The Blue Devils tallied 10 goals overall in the opening 45 minutes in Through four games last season, the Blue Devils had just one first-half tally. Duke went when leading at the half last season and when scoring first. The Blue Devils are when leading at the half this season. GRUELING ACC SLATE The Blue Devils have a grueling ACC schedule this season in taking on six teams in the top 11 and a seventh which is receiving votes. Five of their opponents are in the top 10. Under John Kerr, Duke is at home for a.708 win percentage. The Blue Devils best season was 2009, going at home. WHITE BREAKS THROUGH FOR TWO Senior striker Brian White had many opportunities against Fordham Aug. 27 and buried two of them. The second goal was one that will be replayed many times. It was the first multiple goal game of his career with the four points also being a career-best. White is now just three goals shy of matching his total of five in PULISIC PICKS UP 1ST AWARD Rookie goalkeeper Will Pulisic garnered his first career weekly honor after helping the Blue Devils to a pair of shutouts. Named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week, Pulisic had five saves in his first two games and was one of 15 goalkeepers to record two shutouts in the opening week. Pulisic s two shutouts match Duke s total from The individual record for shutouts is 13 by Pat Johnston in 1983 and James Belshaw had eight in 2012, the most under John Kerr. VEERAKONE BACK AFTER STRONG ROOKIE YEAR Rookie Suniel Veerakone ranked second on the team in points with three goals and five assists for 11 points in He picked up right where he left off, coming off the bench to serve a one-time assist for what proved to be the game-winning goal over UCF. Veerakone s 11 points were the most by a rookie since Cameron Moseley also had 11 points in 17 games in The Michigan native finished the season ranked 23rd by Top Drawer Soccer among all Division I freshmen in DUKE S INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR The Blue Devils roster has an international flavor with nine different countries represented, including the United States. 4 WHITE S SPECTACULAR SUMMER Senior forward Brian White had a spectacular summer with the New York Red Bulls U23 squad. The New Jersey native led the PDL in goals, netting 17 in 14 games to earn the PDL Player of the Year award. He tallied four in one game en route to helping the Red Bulls capture the Mid Atlantic Division Title and PDL regular season crown. His success also landed him on top of the PDL Top Prospects List. SUMMER SUCCESS It was a busy summer as Blue Devils suited up for PDL or NPSL teams. In addition to White, many players found success with their hometown clubs. Markus Fjørtoft joined White on the New York Red Bulls, serving as captain of the club that won the PDL regular season title. Cody Brinkman had a strong summer playing with the North Carolina FC, while also interning locally. Brinkman was voted to the PDL Team of the Week following his two-goal outing against Max Moser s Tobacco Road FC club. Junior Ciaran McKenna saw quality minutes with the Jacksonville Armada U23s, while Jack Doran netted four goals and an assist for FC Boston. Carter Manley and Brandon Williamson both honed their skills with DC United, which goes up against teams from both leagues. name. Will s cousin, Christian Pulisic is a standout for the United States National Team and for Borussia Dortmund. Christian, only 19 years old, has played his way into the starting XI for the U.S. Will experienced success with Dortmund s U19s before enrolling at Duke this summer. Suniel Veerakone must share a little bit of the limelight with his sister Rubina, who is a senior on the Michigan women s soccer team. Rubina started 12 games for the Wolverines last season and recorded three assists. UP NEXT The Blue Devils will not play midweek as they prepare for the annual rivalry game with No. 10 North Carolina. Kickoff is set for Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., in Greensboro. Duke returns home the following Tuesday to host Big Ten foe Wisconsin Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. That game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. INTRODUCING THE NEWCOMERS Kerr welcomed the addition of nine newcomers to the program this fall, including seven freshmen and two transfer student-athletes. The group consists of a trio of goalkeepers, a host of quality defenders and multiple midfielders and strikers to bolster the Blue Devil lineup. Graduate student Erik Hanson and sophomore Daniele Proch arrive as transfers. Hanson was a two-year starter in his four seasons at Brown. Proch comes from Catawba College where he led the team in scoring with 23 points. Matthias Frick and Kristófer Garðarsson are the two new international players, hailing from Austria and Iceland, respectively. Both excelled for their local clubs and are expected to have an immediate impact for the Blue Devils. Daniel Wright is the top rated rookie, coming in at No. 20 in the IMG Academy rankings. Playing for the Crew Soccer Academy Wolves, Wright had 21 goals in 24 games this past season to rank 10th among all academy players. Wilhelm Jacques played his club soccer for FC Boston Bolts. He started all 18 games at defense to help the Bolts secure a playoff spot. Stephen O Connell will provide depth to the lineup after leading Black Rock FC to the New England Premiership Connecticut State title. Michael Reis will be a key addition to the goalkeeping corps. He played for FC Golden State Academy and started all 21 games in goal and posted six shutouts. Will Pulisic rounds out the group after his year of playing in Germany.
