1 Tadhg S. O Donovan Personal Information School of Engineering & Physical Sciences, Date of Birth: 2 nd August, 1980 James Nasmyth Building, Heriot-Watt University, Nationality: Irish Edinburgh, EH14 4AS, United Kingdom Tel: +44 (0) Fax: +44 (0) T.S.O Donovan@hw.ac.uk Personal Statement My career ambition is to excel as a research active Lecturer in Engineering. My primary research interest is in the area of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer. Specifically my research concerns a fundamental investigation of fluid flow and its application to convective heat transfer. Enhancement of heat transfer can be achieved by furthering the understanding of fluid flow in micro-scale and at high temporal resolution. My research interest directly addresses the requirement for more efficient energy production and the thermal management bottleneck to the development of electronic devices with the following research strategy: - Measurement of micro-scale fluid flow & heat transfer at high temporal resolution - Development of fundamental research into real world thermal management hardware ICT & Electronics Cooling Miniaturisation, increased functionality, and increased power demand of electronic devices and systems have made thermal management one of the most severe bottlenecks to technology development in the ICT sector. Development of Renewable Energy Sources Thermal resistance between the surface and working fluid of flat bed solar collectors limits their efficiency to less than 50%. Potential for enhancement can be realised by fundamental investigation of two-phase flow and heat transfer. Research Interests Jet Impingement Heat Transfer, ICT & Electronics Cooling, Synthetic Air Jets, Two Phase Flow & Heat Transfer, Grinding Heat Transfer Professional Membership & Affiliations Centre for Telecommunications Value-Chain-Driven Research January present The CTVR is focused on applying a value-chain perspective to research aimed at realising the next generation of telecommunications networks. It brings together a multi-disciplinary group of researchers drawn from many Irish Universities together with a carefully chosen set of industrial partners to work on those engineering and scientific challenges that will make the most difference to the telecommunications networks in the future. Current research into the development of a Synthetic Miniature Jet Electronics Cooler contributes to the Innovative Thermal Management Technologies Group of the Photonics Strand. Engineers Ireland October present

Time resolved heat transfer measurements, using hot film techniques, and local and whole field flow measurements, using laser Doppler anemometry and particle image velocimetry, are obtained for a range of excitation techniques and flow conditions. Education Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering, 2005 Thesis Title: Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer to an Impinging Air Jet Supervisor: Professor Darina B. Murray B.A. B.A.I. Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, 2001 Dissertation Title: Blood Perfusion Study Supervisor: Professor Darina B. Murray
3 Research Grants Held Development of an improved surface heat flux measurement technique November 2007 Principal Investigator EPS, Start-up Funding, 10,000 To enhance the cooling performance of impinging synthetic air jets a better understanding of the temporal nature of the flow velocity and heat flux is required. This research will measure the heat transfer at various locations along the impingement surface and correlate this with measurements of the local flow velocity and temperature. Of particular interest are the thermal gradients in the jet flow due to vortices and the influence that energy separation has on the local and area averaged heat transfer. Synthetic air jets: A study of convective cooling in thermal management applications September August 2010 Collaborator (no provision made for salary) SFI, Research Frontiers Programme, 183,083 To enhance the cooling performance of impinging synthetic air jets a better understanding of the temporal nature of the flow velocity and heat flux is required. This research will measure the heat transfer at various locations along the impingement surface and correlate this with measurements of the local flow velocity and temperature. Of particular interest are the thermal gradients in the jet flow due to vortices and the influence that energy separation has on the local and area averaged heat transfer. Synthetic Miniature Jet Electronics Cooler October September 2007 Principal Investigator EI, Proof of Concept, 82,669 Thermal hardware is being developed that incorporates an array of miniature impinging synthetic jets to cool electronic packages. The new thermal package will be an economical, compact, efficient and reliable replacement for conventional rotary fan-based cooling units. This research contributes to the Photonics Strand (Innovative Thermal Management Technologies Group) of the CTVR. Publications Journal Publications Donnelly, B., O Donovan, T. S. and Murray, D.
