4 Timothy Chumley 4 (26 students) A first course in differential equations, from the perspective of understanding solutions analytically, qualitatively, and numerically. The course introduces a variety of models from physics (harmonic oscillators), ecology (logistic, Lotka-Volterra, predator-prey population models), and epidemeology (SIR). Students learn analytic techniques (separation of variables, method of undetermined coefficients, integrating factors) for one-dimensional systems, as well as qualitative techniques (phase lines, bifurcation diagrams) and numerical methods (Euler s method and variations). For higher-dimensional systems, an emphasis is placed on the matrix exponential, generalized eigenvectors, and linear algebraic techniques in general for linear systems, and vector fields, phase portraits, existence and uniqueness, linearization, nullclines, separatrices, and other qualitative techniques for nonlinear systems. Computation with Matlab is emphasized throughout. Math 342, Probability, Fall (2 sections, 48 students) See description below. Stat 395, Independent study in Statistical Analysis of Networks, Fall (3 students) An introduction to the statistical methods and modeling of data arising as a discrete mathematical structures. Emphasis on the statistical methodologies and probabilistic theory. Student Research, Summer (2 MHC students; Karen Dong and Young Yang) Math 211, Linear Algebra, Spring (27 students) A first course in linear algebra. Topics include introduction to vector and matrix algebra; theory of linear systems of equations; linear transformations from algebraic and geometric perspectives; vector spaces, linear independence, and bases; orthogonality; eigenvalues and eigenvectors; applications of linear algebra to probability, dynamical systems, and physical sciences. Math 339/Stat 344, Stochastic Processes, Spring (22 students) This course develops the theory of stochastic processes simultaneously from simulation, theoremproof, and application-oriented perspectives. Topics include Markov chains in discrete and continuous time, stochastic optimization and Markov Chain Monte Carlo, queueing theory, Poisson processes, branching processes, martingales, and Brownian motion. In addition to theory, the course investigates applications of stochastic processes, including problems in computer science, statistical sampling, models of call centers, and models of stock prices. Simulations using R programming language used to compare with theory. Math 102, Calculus II, Fall (26 students) Second semester course in calculus with an emphasis on both conceptual and computational ideas. Topics include techniques of integration, applications of integration, differential equations, sequences, series, and Taylor series. Math 342, Probability, Fall (32 students) This course develops the theory of probability simultaneously from both theorem-proof and application-oriented perspectives. Topics include: axiomatic probability; random variables, expectation, and variance; discrete distributions; continuous distributions; stochastic processes; functions of random variables; probabilistic limit theorems.
