NUMERICAL RADIUS ATTAINING COMPACT LINEAR OPERATORS ÁNGELA CAPEL, MIGUEL MARTÍN, AND JAVIER MERÍ Dedicaed o Richard Aron on he occasion of his reiremen from Ken Sae Universiy arxiv: v1 [mah.fa] 23 Feb 2016 Absrac. We show ha here are compac linear operaors on Banach spaces which canno be approximaed by numerical radius aaining operaors. 1. Inroducion Given a real or complex Banach space X, we wrie S X and B X o denoe is uni sphere and is uni ball, respecively, and X for he opological dual space of X. If Y is anoher Banach space, L(X, Y ) denoes he space of all bounded linear operaors from X o Y and we jus wrie L(X) for L(X, X). The space of all compac linear operaors on X will be denoed by K(X). We consider he se Π(X) = { (x, x ) X X : x S X, x S X, x (x) = 1 }. The numerical range of T L(X) is he subse of he base field given by V (T ) = { x (T x) : (x, x ) Π(X) }. A complee survey on numerical ranges and heir relaions o specral heory of operaors can be found in he books by F. Bonsall and J. Duncan [8, 9], where we refer he reader for general informaion and background. The recen developmen of his opic can be found in [10] and references herein. The numerical radius of T L(X) is given by v(t ) = sup { λ : λ V (T ) }. I is clear ha v is a coninuous seminorm which saisfies v(t ) T for every T L(X). I is said ha T aains is numerical radius when he supremum defining v(t ) is acually a maximum. We will denoe by NRA(X) he se of numerical radius aaining operaors on X. One clearly has ha NRA(X) = L(X) if X is finie-dimensional. Even in a separable Hilber space i is no difficul o find diagonal operaors which do no aain heir numerical radii. Our paper deals wih he sudy of he densiy of NRA(X). This sudy was sared in he PhD disseraion of B. Sims of 1972 (see [7]), parallel o he sudy of norm aaining operaors iniiaed by J. Lindensrauss in 1963 [18] (recall ha a bounded linear operaor T beween wo Banach spaces X and Y is said o aain is norm if here is x S X such ha T x = T ). Among he posiive resuls on his opic, we would like o menion ha he se of numerical radius aaining operaors is dense for Banach spaces wih he Radon-Nikodým propery (M. Acosa and R. Payá [5]) and for L 1 (µ) spaces (M. Acosa [1]) and C(K) spaces (C. Cardassi [11]). On he oher hand, he firs example of Banach space for which he se of numerical radius aaining operaors is no dense was given by R. Payá in 1992 [26]. Anoher counerexample was discovered shorly laer by M. Acosa, F. Aguirre and R. Payá [4]. The proofs in hese wo papers are ricky and non-rivial, and, in boh examples, he operaors shown ha canno be approximaed by numerical radius aaining operaors are no compac Mahemaics Subjec Classificaion. 2 2 CAPEL, MARTÍN, AND MERÍ Our aim in his paper is o show ha here are compac linear operaors which canno be approximaed by numerical radius aaining operaors. The analogous problem abou compac operaors which canno be approximaed by norm aaining operaors has been recenly solved by he second auhor of his manuscrip [21]. Acually, he proofs here mix some ideas from ha paper wih some ideas from he already menioned counerexamples for he densiy of numerical radius aaining operaors [4, 26]. Le us commen ha he counerexamples in [4, 26] follow similar lines and borrow some ideas from he seminal paper by Lindensrauss [18]: hey are of he form Y Z, where Y is smooh enough, Z fails o have exreme poins in is uni ball in a srong way, and here are operaors from Z ino Y ha canno be approximaed by numerical radius aaining operaors (norm aaining operaors in he counerexample of Lindensrauss). Moreover, by consrucion, he operaors shown here ha canno be approximaed by numerical radius aaining operaors are no compac, as hey are consruced using operaors from Z ino Y which are no compac. Acually, he exisence of non-compac operaors from Z o Y is one of he building blocks of heir proofs. Here his fac will be replaced by he use of Banach spaces wihou he approximaion propery. Taking advanage of some recen ideas, i is now easy (up o a non-rivial old resul by W. Schachermayer) o presen new examples of (non-compac) operaors which canno be approximaed by numerical radius aaining operaors. However, as we will show a he end of he paper, hese new examples do no work for compac operaors (see Example 3.4). Example 1.1. There are bounded linear operaors on he real spaces X = C[0, 1] 1 L 1 [0, 1] and Y = C[0, 1] L 1 [0, 1] which canno be approximaed by numerical radius aaining operaors. Indeed, suppose for he sake of conradicion ha NRA(X) is dense in L(X). As v(t ) = T for every T L(X) ([13, Theorem 2.2] and [23, Proposiion 1]), i follows ha norm-aaining operaors from X ino X are dense in L(X). Then, we may use [6, Proposiion 2.9] and [27, Lemma 2] o ge ha norm aaining operaors from L 1 [0, 1] ino C[0, 1] are dense in L(L 1 [0, 1], C[0, 1]), bu his is no he case as shown by W. Schachermayer [28]. The proof for Y is absoluely analogous. The ouline of he paper is as follows. We devoe secion 2 o presen he promised example of a compac linear operaor which canno be approximaed by numerical radius aaining operaors. As his example exiss, i makes sense o sudy sufficien condiions on a Banach space X o assure ha NRA(X) K(X) is dense in K(X). In secion 3 we review some of hese condiions which can be easily deduced from previous resuls in he lieraure, and presen some ineresing new examples. Here is he main resul of his paper. 2. The example Theorem 2.1. There is a compac linear operaor which canno be approximaed by numerical radius aaining operaors. To sae our example properly, we need o recall he definiion and some basic resuls abou he approximaion propery. We refer o [15, 19, 20] for background. A Banach space X has he approximaion propery if for every compac se K and every ε > 0, here is R L(X) of finie-rank such ha x R(x) < ε for all x K. I was shown by P. Enflo in 1973 ha here are Banach spaces failing he approximaion propery. Acually, here are closed subspaces of c 0 and l p (p 2) wihou he approximaion propery [19, Theorem 2.d.6], [20, Theorem 1.g.4], and so here are quoiens of l p wihou he approximaion propery (use [15, Corollary ]). Our heorem will be proved if we sae he validiy of he following family of examples. Example 2.2. Given 1 < p < 2 and a quoien Y of l p wihou he approximaion propery, here exiss a closed subspace Z of c 0 such ha K(Y Z) is no conained in he closure of NRA(Y Z). As we already menioned, he idea of considering spaces of he form Y Z, where Y is smooh enough and Z fails o have exreme poins, o produce counerexamples for numerical radius aaining
NUMERICAL RADIUS ATTAINING COMPACT OPERATORS 3 operaors goes back o R. Payá [26] and o M. Acosa, F. Aguirre and R. Payá [4]. The proof of our resul acually is an exension of he one given in [4, 2], bu we necessarily have o change he space Y involved, as Hilber spaces have he approximaion propery [15, Proposiion ], and so do heir closed subspaces. This makes life a lile more complicaed for us. We divide he proof of he main resul ino wo lemmaa and one proposiion for he sake of clearness. The firs resul deals wih he smoohness of he space Y. We recall briefly some facs abou differeniabiliy of funcions on Banach spaces which will be useful o our discussion. We refer he reader o [12] for he deails. Given Banach spaces X, Y and a funcion f : X Y which is Gâeaux (Fréche) differeniable, we wrie D f (x) L(X, Y ) for he differenial of f a x X. We say ha he norm of X is smooh if i is Gâeaux differeniable a every x X \ {0}. The normalized dualiy mapping J X : X 2 X of X is given by J(x) = {x X : x (x) = x 2 = x 2 } (x X). If he norm of X is smooh, his mapping is single-valued and he map J X : X \ {0} S X given by ( ) x J X (x) = J = J(x) (x X \ {0}) x J(x) is well defined. Le us observe ha J X (x) can be alernaively defined as he unique x S X such ha x (x) = x. If, moreover, we assume ha he norm of X is C 2 -smooh on X \ {0}, hen J X is Fréche differeniable on X \ {0}. Lemma 2.3. Le Y be a Banach space such ha he norm of Y is C 2 -smooh on Y \ {0} and le Z be a Banach space. Suppose ha A L(Y ), B L(Z, Y ), and (y 0, y 0) Π(Y ) saisfy ha for all (y, y ) Π(Y ). Then, for every h S Y. y (Ay) + B y y 0(Ay 0 ) + B y B y0 + B h + B y0 B h 2 B y lim = 0 0 Proof. Observe firs ha he assumpion on Y implies reflexiviy [12, Proposiion II.3.4]. Therefore, we may and do idenify Y wih Y and consider he normalized dualiy mapping J Y : Y \ {0} S Y and observe ha i is Fréche differeniable by he hypohesis on Y. Hence, he funcion F : Y \ {0} R given by F (y ) = y [ A ( JY (y ) )] ( y Y \ {0} ) is Fréche differeniable a every y Y \ {0} for which F (y ) 0. Nex, we fix h S Y and for 0 < 1 we define: y = y 0 + h, φ() = y, F 1 () = F (y ), and F 2 () = B y. On he one hand, F 2 is righ-differeniable a he origin as i is a convex funcion. On he oher hand, if we assume ha 0 y 0(Ay 0 ) = F (y 0) = F 1 (0) (observe ha y 0 = J Y (y 0) by smoohness), we ge ha F 1 is differeniable a he origin. Now, by using he inequaliy in he hypohesis for we obain ha y = φ() 1 y and y = J Y (φ() 1 y ) = J Y (y ), (1) F 1 () + F 2 () φ()[f 1 (0) + F 2 (0)] (0 < 1), which gives F 1 () F 1 (0) + F 2() F 2 (0) φ() 1 [F 1 (0) + F 2 (0)] (0 < < 1).
4 CAPEL, MARTÍN, AND MERÍ Taking righ-limis wih 0, we obain F 1(0) + + F 2 (0) φ (0)[F 1 (0) + F 2 (0)] (where + F 2 (0) is he righ-derivaive of F 2 a 0) or, equivalenly, D F (y0)(h B y0 + B h B y ) + lim D Y 0 + (y 0)(h ) [ F (y0) + B (y0) ]. If we repea he above argumen for h, we ge he analogous inequaliy D F (y0)( h B y0 B h B y ) + lim D Y 0 + (y 0)( h ) [ F (y0) + B (y0) ]. Adding he above wo equaions, aking ino accoun ha boh F and he norm of Y are Fréche differeniable, we obain B y0 + B h + B y0 B h 2 B y (2) lim as desired. We recall ha we required ha y 0(Ay 0 ) 0 o use he differeniabiliy of F 1. If, oherwise, we have y 0(Ay 0 ) = 0, observe ha inequaliy (1) implies F 2 () φ()f 2 (0), and we can repea he argumens above wihou he use of F 1. Nex, observe ha he funcion B y0 + B h + B y0 B h 2 B y is non-negaive for every > 0 by he convexiy of he norm, and so he limi in (2) is acually equal o zero. Finally, as changing by in his limi jus changes he sign of he funcion and he limi is zero, we may replace righ-limi by regular limi, geing he saemen of he proposiion. We nex deal wih he needed condiion on he space Z, which is a srong way of failing o have exreme poins. Le Z be a Banach space. We say ha Z is fla a a poin z 0 S Z in he direcion z Z if z 0 ± z 1 and we wrie Fla(z 0 ) = {z Z : z 0 ± z 1} o denoe he se of direcions of flaness a z 0. Observe ha z 0 is an exreme poin of B Z if and only if Z is no fla a z 0 in any direcion (i.e. Fla(z 0 ) = {0}). We say ha B Z is srongly fla if for every z 0 S Z, he closed linear span of Fla(z 0 ) has finie-codimension. Easy examples of spaces of his kind are c 0 and all is closed infinie-dimensional subspaces (see [22, Lemma 2.2]). This definiion is sronger han he one of uniformly asympoically fla [14, V] and, hence, i implies asympoic uniform smoohness [16]. Lemma 2.4. Le Z be a srongly fla Banach space and le Y be a Banach space. B L(Z, Y ) here is y0 S Y such ha for every h S Y B y0 + B h + B y0 B h 2 B y lim and ha B y 0 aains is norm on Z. Then, B has finie-rank. Suppose ha for Proof. Wrie z0 = B y0. As z0 aains is norm, we may ake z 0 S Z such ha Re z0(z 0 ) = z. We claim ha Bz = 0 for every z Fla(z 0 ), and his finishes he proof by he hypohesis on Z. Therefore, le us prove he claim. Fixed z Fla(z 0 ), for each h S Y, we wrie z = θb h, where θ is a modulus-one scalar saisfying ha Re z (z) = z (z). Nex, given ε > 0, we use he inequaliy in he hypohesis o find r > 0 such ha z 0 + z + z 0 z < 2 z + ε
NUMERICAL RADIUS ATTAINING COMPACT OPERATORS 5 for every (0, r). Now, as z 0 ± z 1, we ge ha 2 z + ε > z0 + z + z 0 z ( ) Re [z0 + z ](z 0 + z) + [z0 z ](z 0 z) = 2 z + 2 Re z (z) = 2 z + 2 z (z). This gives ha 2 z (z) < ε, and he arbirariness of ε implies ha 0 = z (z) = [B h ](z) = h (Bz). Since his is rue for every h S Y, we ge ha Bz = 0, as claimed. Finally, numerical radius aainmen appears in our las preliminary resul. We will make use of he following lemma from [26], which we sae for he convenience of he reader. Lemma 2.5. [26, Lemma 1.2] Le Y, Z be Banach spaces, X = Y Z and P Y, P Z he projecions from X ono Y and Z, respecively. For T L(X), we have (1) v(t ) = max{v(p Y T ), v(p Z T )}. (2) If T NRA(X) and v(p Y T ) > v(p Z T ), hen P Y T NRA(X). (3) v(p Y T ) = sup{ y (P Y T (y + z)) : (y, y ) Π(Y ), z B Z } and P Y T NRA(X) if and only if his supremum is aained. Here is he las preliminary resul in he way o prove Theorem 2.1, where we glue our wo lemmaa wih he fac ha an operaor of a paricular form aains is numerical radius. Proposiion 2.6. Le Y be a Banach space such ha he norm of Y is C 2 -smooh on Y \ {0} and le Z be a srongly fla Banach space. Consider X = Y Z and for A L(Y ) and B L(Z, Y ), define T L(X) by ( ) T (y + z) = A(y) + B(z) y Y, z Z. If T NRA(X), hen B is of finie-rank. Proof. Consider he projecion P Y from X ono Y. I is clear ha P Y T = T and Lemma 2.5.(3) provides he exisence of (y 0, y 0) Π(Y ) and z 0 B Z such ha y (Ay + Bz) y 0(Ay 0 + Bz 0 ) for every (y, y ) Π(Y ) and every z B Z. By roaing z, we acually ge or, equivalenly, y (Ay) + y (Bz) y 0(Ay 0 ) + y 0(Bz 0 ) (3) y (Ay) + [B y ](z) y 0(Ay 0 ) + [B y 0](z 0 ). By aking supremum on z B Z, we obain y (Ay) + B y y 0(Ay 0 ) + B y for all (y, y ) Π(Y ). As he norm of Y is C 2 smooh a Y \ {0}, i follows from Lemma 2.3 ha B y0 + B h + B y0 B h 2 B y lim = 0 0 for every h S Y. On he oher hand, when we ake (y, y ) = (y 0, y0) in equaion (3), we obain [B y0](z) [B y0](z 0 ) for every z B Z, meaning ha he funcional B y0 Z aains is norm a z 0. These wo facs and he assumpion on Z allow us o apply Lemma 2.4 o ge ha B is of finie-rank. We are finally able o presen he proof of he main resul of he paper.
6 CAPEL, MARTÍN, AND MERÍ Proof of Example 2.2. Fix 1 < p < 2 and le Y be a quoien of l p wihou he approximaion propery (use [19, Theorem 2.d.6] and [15, Corollary ] for he exisence). Then, here exis a closed subspace Z of c 0 and a compac linear operaor S : Z Y which canno be approximaed by finie-rank operaors [15, Theorem ]. Wrie X = Y Z and le T K(X) be defined by T (y + z) = S(z) (y Y, z Z). Suppose, for he sake of conradicion, ha here is a sequence {T n } in NRA(X) converging o T in norm. We clearly have ha P Y T = T and P Z T = 0, where P Y, P Z are he projecions from X ono Y and Z, respecively. We ge ha {P Y T n } T, {P Z T n } 0, so {v(p Y T n )} v(t ) = v(p Y T ) and {v(p Z T n )} 0. I follows from Lemma 2.5 ha v(t ) = S > 0 and ha P Y T n NRA(X) for every n large enough. Therefore, removing some erms of he sequence {T n } and replacing T n by P Y T n, here is no resricion in assuming ha T n NRA(X), P Y T n = T n n N, and T n T 0. Now, observe ha for each n N here are operaors A n L(Y ) and B n L(Z, Y ) such ha T n (y + z) = A n (y) + B n (z) (y Y, z Z). The norm of Y is C 2 -smooh (indeed, Y is a subspace of l q wih q > 2 and hen we may use [12, Theorem V.1.1]) and Z is srongly fla by [22, Lemma 2.2], so we can use Proposiion 2.6 wih T n o conclude ha B n is a finie-rank operaor for every n N. Bu his leads o a conradicion because {B n } converges in norm o S, finishing hus he proof. 3. Some posiive resuls Le us finish he paper wih a small discussion abou posiive resuls on numerical radius aaining compac operaors. Firs, we show ha hree condiions assuring he densiy of he se of numerical radius aaining operaors also work for he case of compac operaors. We need some definiions. A Banach space X has propery α (respecively propery β) if here are wo ses {x i : i I} S X, {x i : i I} S X and a consan 0 ρ < 1 such ha condiions (i), (ii) and (iii) α (resp. (iii) β ) below hold: (i) x i (x i) = 1, i I; (ii) x i (x j) ρ < 1 if i, j I, i j; (iii) α B X is he absoluely closed convex hull of {x i : i I}; (iii) β B X is he absoluely weakly -closed convex hull of {x i : i I}. We refer o [25] and references herein for more informaion and background. The prooype of space wih propery α is l 1. Examples of Banach spaces wih propery β are closed subspaces of l (I) conaining he canonical copy of c 0 (I). Proposiion 3.1. Le X be a Banach space having a leas one of he following properies: (a) X has he Radon-Nikodym propery; (b) X has propery α; (c) X has propery β. Then, NRA(X) K(X) is dense in K(X). Proof. We firs observe ha if every operaor in X can be perurbed by a compac linear operaor of arbirarily small norm o obain a numerical radius aaining operaor, hen NRA(X) K(X) is dense in K(X). Le us give references o show ha his happens in he cases of he proposiion. (a) In a Banach space wih he Radon-Nikodym propery, every operaor may be perurbed by a rank-one operaor of arbirarily small norm o obain an operaor which aains is numerical radius [5, Theorem 2.4].
NUMERICAL RADIUS ATTAINING COMPACT OPERATORS 7 (b) I is shown in [2] ha in a Banach space wih propery α, given T L(X) and ε > 0, here exiss a nuclear operaor A wih nuclear norm less han ε such ha T + A aains is numerical radius. (c) From [3, Theorem 5], every operaor in a space wih propery β may be perurbed by a rank-one operaor of arbirarily small norm o obain a numerical radius aaining operaor. Our nex resul deals wih he so-called CL-spaces. A Banach space X is a CL-space if is uni ball is equal o he absoluely convex hull of every maximal convex se of is uni sphere. Examples of CL-spaces are he real or complex C(K) spaces and he real spaces L 1 (µ). We refer he reader o [24] and references herein for more informaion and background. Le X be a CL-space. Then, for every T L(X) one has ha v(t ) = T and ha T aains is norm if and only if T aains is numerical radius [1]. Therefore, he following resul is immediae. Proposiion 3.2. Le X be a CL-space. If he se of norm aaining compac operaors is dense in K(X), hen NRA(X) K(X) is dense in K(X). As a corollary, using he resul by J. Johnson and J. Wolfe ha every compac linear operaor having C(K) or L 1 (µ) as domain or range can be approximaed by norm aaining compac operaors [17, Theorems 3 and 4], we ge he following. Corollary 3.3. Le X be a real or complex C(K) space or a real L 1 (µ) space. Then NRA(X) K(X) is dense in K(X). We finish he paper wih anoher consequence of Proposiion 3.2. Compare i wih Example 1.1. Example 3.4. Compac linear operaors on he real spaces X = C[0, 1] 1 L 1 [0, 1] and Y = C[0, 1] L 1 [0, 1] can be approximaed by numerical radius aaining compac operaors. Proof. Being a CL-space is sable by finie l 1 -sum [24, Proposiion 9], so X is a CL-space. Therefore, by Proposiion 3.2, i is enough o show ha norm aaining compac operaors on X are dense. Indeed, by [17, Theorems 3 and 4], we have ha norm aaining compac operaors in boh L(C[0, 1], X) and L(L 1 [0, 1], X) are dense. Then, norm aaining compac operaors on L(X) are dense by [22, Lemma 3.7]. A dual argumen can be given for Y, using [24, Proposiion 8], [17, Theorems 3 and 4] again, and an obvious adapaion o compac operaors of [27, Lemma 2]. References [1] M.
