T h e P a i n t e d G a r d e n P r e - V i s i t G u i d e P a g e 2 Introduction: We want to make your theater experience as enjoyable and memorable as possible. This guide has been created so that families attending the sensory friendly production of The Painted Garden can familiarize themselves with the show and its characters as well as the technical elements of the production. We also have a pre-visit guide for Samueli Theater available at The performance is 50 minutes long. There is no intermission but you can leave at any time and come back in. Some light will remain on in the theater throughout the show so that you can move around, exit and enter as needed. We hope you have a great time at the performance! Special note: All audience members will be asked to remove their shoes before entering the theater. We will provide a space for them to be left and picked up after the performance. About the Show: The Painted Garden is an interactive dance and multimedia show, performed in the round, in which children are invited to accompany dancers in the world on stage, a world filled with sensors that respond to movement and sound. New interactive and multimedia technology allows both the performers and the audience to interact with the video garden, which is projected onto the stage floor.
T h e P a i n t e d G a r d e n P r e - V i s i t G u i d e P a g e 3 The Painted Garden was created by Kurdish painter Rebwar Saeed. He uses the colors yellow, blue, green, and red to represent earth, water/sky, life, and love. On stage three dancers create choreography inside each of these different landscapes and the public is invited on stage to have a tactile relationship with the images and sounds of the garden. The Performers: There are three dancers in the show. They will not speak, but will dance throughout the performance and will leave the stage and re-enter throughout the show from different locations. This is dancer Carolina Amoretti This is dancer Sara Campinoti This is dancer Valentina Sechi
T h e P a i n t e d G a r d e n P r e - V i s i t G u i d e P a g e 4 Set, Video, Lighting and Sound: Set and Video This show is performed in the round, which means that the audience will be seated on all four sides of stage. Here is a picture of what the stage and seating area looks like: There are no set pieces for this show and the only props used are three boxes. The dancers will perform on an empty stage floor. On the floor, video images of the garden will be projected. These video images will change and move constantly throughout the performance and the video will react based on the movement of the dancers and the audience.
T h e P a i n t e d G a r d e n P r e - V i s i t G u i d e P a g e 5 Lighting The lights will be dim/dark throughout the show so that you can see the video projections. The video will be changing constantly so there may be more or less light during the show based on how bright the video is during that part of the show. The seating area will be lit at all times. Sound This show contains recorded sounds, recorded speech/dialogue and recorded music. Music will play throughout the performance, including when you first enter the theater to take your seats. There will also be recorded speech/dialogue that will play several times during the performance. The music in the performance includes many different sound effects like rattling, drums, echoes/echoed voices, bells/ringing, crunching, water drops, rushing water, wind, birds, beeping, guitar strings and chimes. There will be music or sound playing throughout the entire performance. Video The entire performance is based on the dancers and audience interacting with video projections on the stage floor. The videos will move and change constantly throughout the performance and will react and change based on the movement of the dancers and the audience. Below you will find pictures that will show you how the video will look and change throughout the performance. Announcements There will be a brief announcement just before the show begins. If you have any questions about our sensory friendly performance of The Painted Garden, reach out to us at access@scfta.org
T h e P a i n t e d G a r d e n P r e - V i s i t G u i d e P a g e 6 Walkthrough of the Performance When you first enter the theater, the video will look like different paint brushes on the floor: The video and recorded speech will introduce the audience to the four different parts of the performance Earth, represented by the color yellow:
