4 ABSTRACT The title of this thesis is Politeness Maxims Found between Characters in Paper Towns Movie.It discusses about the type of Politeness Maxims used by the characters in Paper Towns movie. The aims of this thesis are to describe the type of politeness maxims and also to analyze the reasons why politeness maxims are used by the characters in Paper Towns movie. Primary data in this writing was taken from the utterances in conversation between characters in Paper Towns movie. The conversations that were chosen in this study are the ones having Politeness Maxims. The methods applied in this thesis were documentation method and qualitative research. The data were descriptively and qualitatively analyzed based on the theory of politeness maxims stated by Leech (1983). Leech proposed six maxims that determined politeness. They are well known as Leech s Politeness Maxims: Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim and Sympathy Maxim. The findings of the analysis show that all of the six politeness maxims can be found in this movie. They are Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim, and Sympathy Maxim. The type of politeness maxim that mostly used by the characters is Approbation Maxim. In addition, the reason for using politeness maxim is mostly because of context of situation and relationship between the characters.
