Norris, NDA This session will explore the phenomena of anomalous or abnormal heads in clay formations. The detection and interpretation of such situations -- and their causes-- can give insights for site characterisation and repository performance in terms of, for example, site stability and solute migration. The objective of the session is to define the key issues related to anomalous heads and to assess (preliminarily) their relevance to geological repositories. The Canadian programme for the Bruce nuclear site is taken as a central case study. An overview will also be provided of experience and interest from other national programmes. The 3
4 outcomes are expected to inform a Clay Club decision on whether further work in this area should be pursued. Presentations and a summary of discussions from the topical session will be documented as part of the summary record for the meeting. 7.1 Presentations and Case Study 25 minutes each (15 minute for presentation, 10 minutes for questions) 11:15 11:40 12:05 12:30 a. 8 Thursday, 23 September :30 TECHNICAL VISIT: Bruce Site (continued) A technical tour of the Bruce nuclear site, the location for Ontario Power Generation s proposed Deep Geologic Repository for low and intermediate level radioactive waste in Canada, will be provided on Day 3. Geologically, the Bruce nuclear site is situated on the Eastern flank of the intra-cratonic Paleozoic age Michigan Basin. The sedimentary sequence beneath the site is approximately 860 m thick, comprised of near horizontally layered (0.6 o ) dolostone, limestone, shale, evaporites and minor sandstone formations (34), Cambrian to Devonian in age. As envisioned the repository would be constructed at a nominal depth of 680 m in the argillaceous limestone Cobourg Formation beneath a 200 m thick confining layer of shale (Queenston, Georgian Bay, Blue Mountain Formations). The DGR is project is currently part of an on-going Environmental Assessment (EA) initiated in As part of the EA, a multi-phase geoscientific investigation to confirm the suitability of the Paleozoic sedimentary sequence beneath the Bruce nuclear site for implementation of the DGR concept was initiated in 2006 and is now nearing completion. The technical tour will provide background and interim results from the Geoscientific investigation, DGR engineering design, Safety Assessment and Public Relations. Further information and scientific publications on the proposed DGR can be downloaded from nwmo.ca/dgr. This includes the technical papers described below, which provide useful background information. 1. Ontario Power Generation s Proposed L&ILW Deep Geologic Repository: An Overview of Geoscientific Studies 2. Diffusive anisotropy in low-permeability Ordovician sedimentary rocks from the Michigan basin in southwest Ontario 3.
