Nils completed his PhD working on the Hammond Reef orogenic gold deposit at McGill University. It gave students a perspective of ore deposits from a structural geologist and was a fantastic case study of an orogenic gold prospect. Students into Mining (22/02/2017)

3 This year s Students into Mining proved to be the most successful to date. The event comprised of a series of talks from a range of industry personnel covering the spectrum of mining related career paths. The chapter was delighted to see a great turnout, especially from students from universities across the UK including CSM, Southampton, Portsmouth, Plymouth and UCL. Talks were given as follows: Sabine Anderson & Ben Lepley - SRK Consulting Provided insights of working in geological consultancy with their different focuses Highlights: producing a resource estimate and CPR (Competent Persons Report) on a bauxite project, and a PFS (Prefeasibility Study) an iron ore project. Ryan Bartlett - Rio Tinto Ryan took us through 7 years of experience in a variety of base and precious metal exploration projects. Charting his career from Stratex Internation in Africa to Dalradian Resources and now Rio Tinto where he is working on copper exploration. Dr Clive Hallett - Amec Foster Wheeler Clive shared his 36 years of experience in the mining and metallurgical sector, and outlined the opportunities for environmental geologists in economic geology. Dr Ian Cope - ArcellorMittal Ian gave an overview of the global iron ore mining and steel production from the world s biggest producer. In addition he explained his unconventional route to his present role of Global Exploration Manager, starting geology as a mature student and completing a PhD on the Simandou deposit after 8 years with Rio Tinto. Liv Carroll - Accenture Liv discussed Accenture s role in the on-going digitalisation of the mining industry. Including the automatization of excavation, improved on-site digital communication and propelling mining into a sustainable future. Drew Craig- Rocklore Drew provided a novel perspective on careers in geoscience. This included his role as a military geologist for the British Army and Rocklore s fascinating work in geopolitically challenging areas of the world. Tristan Hobbs - CRU Tristan offered an engaging primer on the roles of a mining analyst, demonstrating the versatility of geologists in the commodities sector. Dr Stuart McCracken AngloAmerican Following a difficult few years for Anglo, Stuart gave words of optimism for geology graduates embarking on a career in mining. The event concluded with refreshments and a networking session.

Morocco International Fieldtrip (10/07/2017-20/07/2017) Each year, Imperial SEG Chapter run an international field trip to explore a range of different deposits and mines to further knowledge beyond

4 Morocco International Fieldtrip (10/07/ /07/2017) Each year, Imperial SEG Chapter run an international field trip to explore a range of different deposits and mines to further knowledge beyond that taught in lectures. This year we organized a field trip to Morocco for 11 days in the July. The trip brought together a consortium of students, industry and academia. The committee worked hard to obtain funding for the fieldtrip with up to 8000 raised with thanks to SEG funding and sponsorship from IOM3, MinSouth, SRK, Altus Strategies and Gerald UK. We would like to thank our sponsors for their generous funding as this makes the fieldtrip accessible to students at a subsidized rate. Dr. Johann Tuduri of the French Geological Survey (BGRM), an expert on the metallogenesis of Morocco, kindly offered to lead our group. We covered deposits on a traverse through the Atlas Mountains including: high grade Au mineralization and prospects, Mo skarns, massive sulphide deposits and porphyry Cu. Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech Day 2: Morning: Hajar volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits near Marrakech. Afternoon: Hajar mineral processing plant. Day 3: Travel south through the High Atlas Mountains on a transect through the orogenic belt. Various stops to understand the geological evolution of the Atlas Mountains. Day 4: Overview of the Late Neoproterozoic geology in the Qalaat M Gouna inlier (Jbel Saghro) with an emphasis on the magmatic stages through the period (granites and ignimbrites). Day 5: Bouskour Cu mine. Day 6: Alteration and related ore deposits in the Qalaat M Gouna inlier (Jbel Saghro) with different workstations on a gold prospect. Synthesize geological knowledge from Day 5 in order to understand deposit genesis.

Day 7: Visit to the High-Atlas spectacular canyons. Day 8: Imiter Au mine (10Mt @ 500g/t gold). Day 9: Travel back to Marrakech. Day 10: Visit to Azegour Mo skarn in the High Atlas.

Johann Tuduri Lecture (29/08/2017) To thank Dr. Johann Tuduri for leading such an enjoyable field trip for our chapter in Morocco, we invited him over to visit Imperial College and the Natural History Museum in London. Johann gave an excellent lecture titled Neoproterozoic magmatic flare-up along the northern margin of Gondwana and its implications on Au, Cu, Mo and Ag mineralisations: a matter of subduction dynamics. The talk provided an excellent wrap up on the metallogenesis of the Anti-Atlas in Morocco for trip participants. Several trip participants and other academic and students from the Natural History Museum and Imperial College London attended the lecture. In the evening after the talk, those who were on the trip went for a reunion meal and reminisced about the good times we had in Morocco. Future projects The future of Imperial SEG looks bright as plans for the new academic year are coming together. SEG International Exchange Lecturer Chusi Li will be visiting in October to give lectures on magmatic sulphide deposits and mafic-ultramafic petrology. An ambitious international field trip to Namibia is currently being planned for summer The chapter is aiming to collaborate more with other SEG chapters across the UK this year.
