3 Summary of Activities: Fall Field Trip (October 27 th October 30 th, 2015) Kirkland Lake, Ontario The University of Western Ontario (UWO) Society of Economic Geologists London Student Chapter (SEGSC) organized a four day field trip to Kirkland Lake, within Canada s Abitibi Greenstone belt. The purpose of this trip was to expose students to the regional geology, as well as the multiple styles of mineralization found in the district. Two mine site visits highlighted the trip; a tour of the Kirkland Lake Gold core shack and overview of the Macassa mine, and a tour of the Young Davidson open pit and core shack owned by Alamos gold, located in Matachewan, Ontario. At Kirkland Lake Gold, our students looked at drill core demonstrating the main structural controls and different styles of mineralization associated with the extremely high grades at the Macassa mine. At the Young Davidson mine, a tour of the open pit syenite hosted gold deposit illustrated the structural and geochemical controls of vein hosted mineralization. A regional geology tour was led by Ministry of Northern Development and Mines regional resident geologists Gary Grabowski and Dave Guindon. They took our group to different outcrops representative of the regional geology, providing our students with an overview of the tectonic history of the southern Abitibi greenstone belt. A stop was also made at the historic silver mining district of Cobalt, Ontario. The Trip was organized and led by Luke Howitt (SEGSC President) and professor Neil Banerjee. 9 graduate students and 2 undergraduate students, and 1 professor from UWO attended, all being SEG student and chapter members. 4 Guest Speakers (November 25th, 2016) UWO, London, Ontario The SEG Distinguished Lecturer 2016, John Thompson, gave a presentation to the UWO department of Earth Sciences. Student-Industry Interaction (January 25 th, 2016) Vancouver, BC The Student Chapter of the Society of Economic Geologists attended the University of Western Ontario Alumni Night at the AME BC Round Up. This event invited Western alumni in industry and other guests to join in refreshments at the conference to meet and connect with current Western students and faculty. A book containing the resumes of SEG student members was available at the Western booth and the reception for interested parties. This was an excellent venue for students to meet with industry individuals in a relaxed atmosphere and cultivate contacts. Spring Field Trip (February 12 th 20 th, 2016) Southwest United States This primary objective of this field trip was to view the Colorado River Extended Terrane and Laramide tectonic zone of the Southwest US. The Students had the opportunity to look at the characteristics of mineralization for epithermal precious metal Mid-Tertiary extension along the Colorado River (Golden Vertex - Moss mine and Gold Road), Laramide prophyries (Freeport-McMoRan - Bagdad), Proterozoic VMS (Jerome) and Tertiary U-bearing breccias (Grand Canyon). This trip was organized by Luke Howitt, Dylan Langille, Lindsay Debono, and Sarah CoDyre and led by Dylan Langille with support from Dr. Bob Linnen and Dr. David Good. 6 graduate students, 2 undergraduate students, and 2 professors attended and had the opportunity to visit active and historic mine sites. Two operating mine sites were visited; the Northern Vertex Moss Mine and the Freeport McMoRan Bagdad Mine. The Moss Mine is a great example of a gold-silver stockwork, brecciated, low-sulfidation epithermal system. The tour was led by project manager, Joe Bardswich, which included their heap leach system. The Bagdad Mine is a large open pit Cu-Mo porphyry system. The tour was provided by the chief geologist, Paul Albers and included going through the open pit to observe the pit-wall geology, tour the SX-EW facility and go through the process of plating copper, and finished off with a tour of the mill and floating plant for Cu and Mo concentrates. In addition to these active mines, stops were made at the historic mining town of Oatman to observe the surface expression of epithermal mineralization, and the Peach Spring Tuff which provided insight to the volcanic history of the terrane. The second half of the trip consisted of guided tours by Paul Lindberg, structural geologist and resident of Sedona, AZ. Paul brought our group to the mining camp of Jerome, AZ, where he provided a detailed structural explanation for the emplacement of the Jermone VMS deposit, as well as the neotectonics of the Verde Valley. Paul also led our group to the Grand Canyon, where he explained the tectonic evolution.

This event invited Western alumni in industry and other guests to join in refreshments at the Royal York Hotel to meet and connect with current Western students and faculty. A book containing the resumes of SEG student members was available at the Western booth and the reception for interested parties. This was an excellent venue for students to meet with industry individuals in a relaxed atmosphere and cultivate contacts. SEG student members were also in charge of setting up and maintaining a Western booth at the PDAC. Student & Industry Presentations Ongoing UWO, London, Ontario The SEG helps to coordinate a weekly talk series called Hard Rock Café, where often graduate students in the field of economic geology will present updates on their studies to a group of their peers and professors. The group will provide feedback and ask questions to help further develop the study. Occasionally a visiting industry representative will give an update on an exploration or mining project, often associated with any academic work that may be going on there. SEG Awards Luke Howitt was a recipient of a Barrick-sponsored SEG-GSF. Hannah Cavallin was a recipient of a Newmont-sponsored SEG-CGF. Lindsay Debono was a recipient of a SEG- Canada Foundation GSF Dylan Langille was a recipient of a SEG-SRG.
