2 Course Overview This masterclass will provide a thorough understanding on the evaluation of shale gas and oil reservoirs from various perspectives (geological, geophysical, geochemical and petrophysical) and how to classify and estimate unconventional gas reserves accurately and precisely. Delegates will learn to evaluate the various black shales, as shale-gas & shale-oil targets, as well as predicting locations of quality shale plays. The course will also present on successful shale-gas/shale-oil plays in the US, Canada and other places in the world. A short presentation on other unconventional gas and oil types (tight sandstone-gas, Bakken Play) will also be included. Project exercises and case studies based from the trainer s past experience will also be covered extensively to allow delegates to gain practical experience from this masterclass. Course Content Day One: REVIEW OF ORGANIC-RICH SHALE DEPOSITION Introduction to black shales as petroleum source rocks The different types of black shales and their depositional processes (Marine, Lacustrine, Hypersaline, Deltaic) Sequence stratigraphy of black shale deposition (using the Eustatic Cycle) Prediction method of locating black shales of any age and at any location Presentation of basic geochemical analysis of black shales, by using laboratory results (Total Organic Carbon, Hydrogen Index etc) A short presentation on the maturity and basin modelling process Theory about the formation of shale-gas -- How it is formed and why it is there? Structural geology parameters for a successful shale exploration The Bakken Play, the Eagle Ford Play, the Paris Basin Play and the Neuquen Basin Play: similarities and differences First results of shale-gas exploration in Europe (Poland, Sweden). Why it has failed so far and what brings the future? EXERCISE 1: Exploring for shale-gas/shale-oil or any unconventional petroleum play in a new basin (data will be given to the attendants) EXERCISE 2: Explain the failure of some shale-gas wells (data will be provided) in Europe. Africa, Brazil etc Tight sandstone-gas: a hybrid conventional-unconventional play EXERCISE : Evaluate a real basin in some part of the world (ie. in Germany or in the UK) and compare the results with US analogues Day Five: ESTIMATION OF UNCONVENTIONAL OIL & GAS VOLUMES Various methods of estimating unconventional oil & gas resources How to calculate volumes of oil and gas, without historical or production data Classification of unconventional oil & gas volumes using established schemes. FIVOS SPATHOPOULOS Petroleum Exploration Consultant, Praxxis Ltd Dr Fivos Spathopoulos worked as an exploration geologist in petroleum exploration projects for more than 20 years for both conventinoal and unconventional reservoirs. From 1990 to 2006 he worked as a geologist and basin analyst in HESS Ltd and other oil companies, where he was involved in determining the petroleum systems of various basins in the world and in looking for new petroleum plays, where he has worked in the following geological areas: South and Middle Caspian Sea North Sea Exploration West Africa, South Atlantic Basins NW African Continental Margin Caspian Sea and Eastern Mediterranean Since 2007, he has been working as a shale-gas/shale-oil exploration geologist in Europe, where he studied the organic geochemistry, lithology and gas content of large amount of black shales in Europe. He is an expert on organic geochemistry and maturity modelling. He has also developed an effective method of estimating potential shale-gas/shale-oil quantities in new basins. He has compiled a large study of the source rocks of the world, including a method to predict source rock deposition and quality in every basin and at every geological interval. He is also an expert in maturity modelling, using the PetroMod software, as well as in organic geochemistry, sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology and formation pressure analysis. During his career time at the Imperial College London, he lectures on Geology of Petroleum Source Rocks, Petroleum Systems Analysis, Formation Pressure Analysis and Unconventional Petroleum and also participates in several University-Industry projects related to shale characterization as shale-gas/shale-oil targets.
